Primal Scream – Movin' On Up Lyrics 16 years ago
"I was blind, but now I see
You made a believer out of me"

These lines are a tribute to the band CAN, who sang very similar lines in their song Yoo Doo Right (album: Monster Movie).

You might think it's a coincidence, but then consider that Gillespie wrote an account of a time Primal Scream jammed with some CAN members in the liner notes to the remastered Tago Mago.

If you like Primal Scream, you should definitely check out CAN, starting either with Tago Mago or Ege Bamyasi.

Mr. Bungle – Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz Lyrics 17 years ago
There may be no lyrics (just Mike Patton vocal experimentations), but this is definitely NOT instrumental.

One of the best off Disco Volante, which stands as one of the greatest albums of the past two decades.

I've always felt they got better with Damo Suzuki. Just read my comment for I'm So Green.

Can – I'm So Green Lyrics 17 years ago
^^^

To you it may be funny, but to me... perfection.

Damo Suzuki is the greatest vocalist to have ever walked this earth (though Topi Lehtipuu of Hoyry Kone is pretty good as well). Mikael Karoli (we all know who he is, right?) said it best when he said that Damo could "capture the entire sound spectrum of CAN in a single word."

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens The Discussion Lyrics 17 years ago
Easily my favorite metal album, and yet I've only heard this song so far. Why then, do I say that... because this song is simply amazing, and the most intelligent metal song I've ever heard (must be the RIO influences).

Can – Halleluhwah Lyrics 17 years ago
Did anybody see this snowman
Stand there with the lord
With proper get up, hang his hat
only you're feeling sleepy eyed

It's my recording station, man
But I record in his head
Going down to big mouth
Oh the ice came down from way up north

Ooh, shadow coming out
Why, it's all a story, story that
Oh, sample all about
Spinning that all the time

Ah, a power strike me out
Did I slip this thing on their life
And my God buying out
Who awaits me inside

Searching for my brother, yes, I am
Searching for my brother, yes, I am
Searching for my brother, yes, I am
Searching for my brother, yes, I am

Did you see the day
Every fever may I search him
You can find him, out of steam
She just cried, cried away

Oh
There's all a woman, just by me
And she asked me if I'd stay
For a night
Something was going, I was sinking
Mushroom head, oh yeah, paperhouse
I wonder if I should go...

I'll continue this later, but I don't have time now. An incredible song, and clearly indicating Suzuki's future (and unfortunate) departure in order to become a Jehovah's Witness...

Sad things religion do to humanity...

I believe these lyrics are improvised...

Not the greatest CAN song, Damo Suzuki simply packed more punch as a vocalist, more, in fact, than anyone else I know.

Yes – South Side of the Sky Lyrics 17 years ago
Those talking about the Antarctic mission got it right. Apparently, a young, stoned Jon Anderson was watching the discovery channel and they were talking about said mission, so he wrote this song. I wouldn't quote me on that though. All I know is that this is an incredible song that plays a huge role in making Fragile a masterpiece.

Yes – Heart of the Sunrise Lyrics 17 years ago
All the metal fans out there need to realize that Yes and King Crimson were vital in the creation of metal, and were notably better at it than most metal bands. I have never heard as beautiful a song with metal elements than this, and I have never heard more intelligent heaviness than Crimson's Larks' Tongue In Aspic Part 1.

I was playing this for my dad a while back, having told him about the solo projects on the album, and he asked, after hearing the intro, whether this was the drummer's solo piece.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure what this song is about, perhaps relaxation or something else like that. A great song, perhaps my favorite Yes, though the competition with Roundabout, South Side of the Sky, Close to the Edge, And You And I, and Gates of Delirium is certainly tough.

Yes – The Gates of Delirium Lyrics 17 years ago
Never mind what I said about CTTE (the song) in my last post. I know enjoy every Yes album from The Yes Album to Relayer sans Tales, and I haven't heard anything beyond that.

Not the best of prog (Genesis gets that award), but definitely up there with the greats.

Robert Wyatt – Last Straw Lyrics 17 years ago
This song refers to the "rock bottom" he hit after his accident (falling out of a window and breaking his spinal cord - confined to a wheelchair since). This entire album is some of the most moving music around, with especially overwhelming keyboards. And Wyatt's voice... to die for.

submissions
Robert Wyatt – Sea Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This song does not seem to me to have much of a concept, per se, but is rather more of a mixed jumble of pure emotion that goes to your soul and moves you like little else can. I'm just getting into this album, widely regarded as a masterpiece of Canterbury Prog, but this is an impressive beginning.

Yes – Close to the Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
I just went on a Yes experience, as I used to find them the weakest of the prog giants. How foolish I was. Fragile is now one of ten masterpieces for me, and CTTE and the Yes Album are giving me good vibes. Tales unimpressed me, and Relayer I need to listen to again.

As a response to Camel Fan, they do mean something, but it would be incredibly difficult to figure it out unless you were Jon Anderson. Very spiritual, that's for sure.

The first four minutes are the best. As is the next part. And the ending of the song has a power to rival the ending of Genesis's Supper's Ready.

submissions
The Flower Kings – Paradox Hotel Lyrics 17 years ago
Retro Prog is for those who don't know the 70s giants. Not to be offensive, but the Flower Kings are like an ant, while Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and the others are full grown humans. The Flower Kings may bite, but they'll never reign supreme in the world of prog.

At least they're better than (most) neo-prog.

Anglagard – Vandringar I Vilsenhet Lyrics 17 years ago
English Translation as Follows

Wanderings in Confusion

Fragments from times past are now.
The world of loneliness where we live,
with everything that has been piled up
all around us,
constantly brings our inner being
towards disturbance and disharmony.
All dreamers who know
something else are wrong.
It may be that one is led astray.
Why exist here for no good?
Time goes suffering
my soul passes onwards
in the dream.

Searching for an answer in a mist dominated
by confusion and incomplete life;
Where immoral people take over
and thought becomes a feeling of
despair, doubt and indifference.
Then, we rendezvous and gather for a feast
for comprehension beyond
a hypocritical, jesting and abracadabra world.

Anglagard – Kung Bore Lyrics 17 years ago
English translation as follows

King Winter

In the light from my lantern
I see the shadow of sorrow,
in dreams that have been extinguished
from a life that has had its time.
I cannot stand and watch
while we flee
reality and truths,
where morality is fantasy.

It is you who chooses
it is you that swallows
their fairy tales and lies and flattery.

Is it true that they who speak
loud, strong and right
also plant dead flowers?
Then it cannot be easy
for a human to believe
that God, he is great,
when silence spreads
in the house where she lives.

It is you that chooses,
it is you that swallows,
their fairy tales and lies and flattery.

"King Winter" is dead
and Spring, the newly elected,
is the people's hero.
Visions are born,
and it is time to populate
their castles in the clouds.
Life's panorama,
a hallucination, I have
longed for so tremendously.
Give me a view
into the land of dreams,
only then will I be happy.

Anglagard – Ifran Klarhet Till Klarhet Lyrics 17 years ago
The English translation of the lyrics (courtesy of Anglagard.net) is as follows

From Strength To Strength

What kind of strange thing are you
who talk of confusion?
The Aesir that govern us in our faith
say that what is happening
takes us to a better world.

What is true,
what is false
in a fabricated illusion?
To be supplied and guided
constantly ready,
does it make you free and strong in faith?
Questions [of wonder] are close to me.

Dreams about abstract things
take us on an unknown journey,
in which limitation, right,
wrong and time
do not exist.
There are wondrous things there.

Ange – Si J'Etais Le Messie Lyrics 17 years ago
They may be in French, but they are still some amazing lyrics.

It's spoken word, by the way, and if you couldn't tell, the title means If I Were the Messiah, and this excellent line -

Si j'étais le Messie, je me ferais crucifier

- means, "if I were the messiah, I'd be crucified."

Classic. A great album.

According to many Genesis fans, Phil killed Genesis and is the leading cause of both world hunger and AIDS.

Me, I'll stick with simply he killed Genesis. He's good for pop, but pop will never reach the heights of progressive rock.

Nektar – Remember the Future (Part 1) Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of those songs/albums that you hate at first, and then grows on you, which was certainly the case with me.

As for the meaning, I'm not sure, but here is an interesting interpretations courtesy of Joolz:

The story is about the nature of life and existence as told by a kind of re-incarnating misfit ('Bluebird') to someone to whom his abnormalities have no meaning - a blind boy. Bluebird appears to be a Christ-like figure who has to be crucified before being reborn in the boy. The boy absorbs stories of the past and future, the meaning of life, before becoming the future with the promise of eternal life. The story ends with Bluebird imparting some sound and thought-provoking advice.

Back to me now. Reading the lyrics, this seems reasonable, and this is truly an excellent song and an excellent album. A must have.

Opeth – Ghost of Perdition Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, and for an actually useful comment, this song does seem to be about exorcism. The lyrics aren't in the style I like, but they are not bad, either. A great song, and the growls are impressive if only for the fact that it's his actual voice and not a computer.

Opeth – Ghost of Perdition Lyrics 17 years ago
I didn't think I could like metal, especially not death metal and death metal growls, but this song changed that. Well... I still don't like the growls, but Opeth's melodic death metal is a lot better than much of what's out there.

Long live progressive rock...

Er, I mean:

Long live progressive metal!
And rock!
