Cannibal Corpse – I Cum Blood Lyrics 18 years ago
OK, what all you people who are complaining about this band don't realise is that by complaining about them you are actually helping them. Let me explain Cannibal Corpse's formula:

1. We suck at songwriting so we need a gimmick because people won't buy our records solely for the music.

2. Let's shock people by writing over-the-top, disgusting, gory lyrics.

3. People see our lyrics and start complaining about it and this creates controversy.

4. This controversy results in free publicity. Even if the publicity is negative, it is still good because we are an underground band and hardly anyone knows about us and we are extremely unlikely to obtain advertising rights. This brings me to my next point:

5. All this controversy and people complaining about us reinforces our 'badass' or 'evil' image. This makes the people who listen to our music feel that they are 'badass', 'evil' or rebellious. Or, alternatively, they may listen to our music just for the sake of pissing other people off. So even though the publicity we recieve is considered 'negative', it just makes our target audience feel more 'evil' and rebellious and thus increases our popularity.

6. People start buying our t-shirts with the controvercial album art on it to shock and offend other people.

7. All this results in increased sales that wouldn't have happened if people didn't create so much controversy about us.

8. Thus, we become richer and the record company is less likely to drop us.

So if you people really want to get rid of Cannibal Corpse, then ignore them. By coming here and complaining about this band you are just doing what they want you to do - create controversy. Why else would they write such controvercial lyrics? They knew that people would react in the way that you people are and they knew that this would help their record sales. And it did - Cannibal Corpse is now the best-selling death metal band even though they probably have the least song-writing ability out of all of them.

The same happened with Eminem. People thought that by whining about his lyrics and complaining to the government that they would get rid of him. In fact, the complete opposite happened. Complaining to the government achieved nothing because if the government tried to ban him then he could just sue them for breaking the 1st Amendment and would probably win so they were too scared to take action. All the controversy created gave him free publicity which he would have otherwise payed heaps of money for (you know how expensive advertising rights are). Even though the publicity was negative, his target audience didn't give a shit because they were kids. Plus the only people who were complaining were the parents, media and government so the kids basically got the impression that they were being rebellious by buying his albums and this increased his sales and thus increased his willingness to put out even more controversial lyrics because he knew they would sell even more.

Black Sabbath – Walpurgis Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the original version of War Pigs. The record company forced them to change it to War Pigs and change the lyrics because there were rumours around at the time that Black Sabbath were Satanists (not true). This was partly the record company's fault for putting an inverted cross on the cover sleeve of their first album without asking them and making everyone think that they were Satanists.

50 Cent – Candy Shop Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a rapper who got shot 3 times but then claimed that it was 9 and got the media to lie about it and create heaps of hype about it. Eminem, being the clever marketeer that he is, realised that dumbass rap fans would fall for the hype and believe that getting shot a few times makes you a gangster with lots of "street cred" so he signed him up. This gave him 70% of his publicity and appealed to chavs all over the world.

The rapper then continued to build his career upon dissing Ja Rule. This gave him a lot of publicity as Ja Rule is shit and everyone hates him. The rapper's diss songs were extremely hypocritical as he was calling the person who he stole his style from a shit rapper. For example, the rapper would diss Ja Rule for singing on his songs, a technique that he would end up using himself later on in his career to hide his lack of rhyming ability.

In his first album, he wrote cliché lyrics about guns and hoes and how "gangsta" he is. This made him appealing to 12 year old girls and chavs which made up 98.75% of his fanbase. There has been much controversy regarding his lyrics. Many critics pointed out the fact that the rapper was illiterate and claim that he therefore could not have written them. Other critics skilfully pointed out that the lyrics were “really really shitty” and contained evidence suggesting that they were written by a monkey.

One big obstacle that the rapper had to overcome in his career was the fact that he couldn’t rap. In fact, technically he was not a rapper at all. He would just mumble into the mic for 3 minutes per song. This mumbling was also extremely monotonous – he made no attempt to change the tempo or dynamics of this mumbling throughout the whole album. He then realised that he would not sell a single copy unless he had some good beats. This is where he faced his second major obstacle – the fact that he had no knowledge of music whatsoever. However, since he was signed to Eminem’s record company which was affiliated with Dr. Dre’s, he realised that he could just get Dr. Dre (who could make any shitty rapper look like Tupac) to make his beats. Arguably, these beats saved his album from being extremely shitty and instead it was just very shitty. The “phat” beats also appealed to his chav audience and he also got all the credit for them.

Before making his second album, the rapper tried as hard as he could to get himself shot again but didn’t succeed. He was then left with no gimmick to make up for his lack of rhyming ability and things were not looking good for him. He then resorted to making shitty songs about bragging about how rich he was and fucking hoes. Unfortunately, nobody could relate to these lyrics, including himself because he just made them up. Things were not looking good for him and he was beginning to run out of options. Then, when all seemed to be lost, it hit him – he remembered how he built his early career upon dissing Ja Rule and how much publicity it gave him. Then he realised that all was not lost and he still hade a hope of creating some hype. He figured that dissing some other rappers would give him much publicity and “street cred” – a move, that when executed properly, would normally have good results. He then recorded a diss track called Piggy Bank where he would diss a whole bunch of rappers like Fat Joe, Jadakiss and Nas for absolutely no reason at all. Unfortunately, the song was extremely shit and went down in the Guinness Book of Records as the shittiest diss song ever. Also, he was careless enough to diss Nas who is 907037213 times better than him and would kick his ass in a battle. The diss song was so shit that it had an opposite effect and just highlighted how shit he was lyrically. Also he could not respond to his rival’s responses and this just further highlighted how shit he was. It was even enough to make the chavs realise that the man they were idolising was just an untalented loser. After destroying the most fail-safe attempt at publicity, 50 Cent was left with no other gimmicks to sell his album and not even Dre’s beats could save it. Even though the album sold quite a bit, it was not enough for those greedy bastards at MTV so they made a movie and a game about him because polluting the radio-waves was not enough. As predicted, the game and the movie were both shit. Soon all his 12-year old fans will grow up and realise how brainwashed they were and claim that they always hated him or some new shitty rapper will come up and take over the airwaves and he will no longer be profitable to MTV and will be dropped and nobody will remember him in 5 years.

The Black Eyed Peas – My Humps Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, I agree with No Code. If we can enlighten at least some people with our "whining" then it's worth it. I mean, after all, it's people's fault that pop music is around because they buy into it and give record companies an incentive to put shitty music out. Just because we are unlikely to completely get rid of shitty music, doesn't mean that we shouldn't try and reduce the number of people that listen to it.

Dead Kennedys – D.M.S.O. Lyrics 18 years ago
D.M.S.O is a solvent which penetrates the skin deeply and quickly. Usually, other chemicals are dissolved in it and when it penetrates the skin it carries those chemicals with it into the body. In this case, Jello is talking about using it to dissolve LSD and then swabbing the solution on police car handles as a prank.

Dead Kennedys – Holiday in Cambodia Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song is about all those spoilt little shits who think their so tough because they go around and abuse people and treat people like shit. Like those people who go around in gangs and pick on a single person and those people in school who are popular and treat everyone else like shit because they can get away with it because everyone will stand up for them. They think that they know everything about the world because they go to school even though you don't get the full picture of what goes on in the world just from that. "You want everyone to act like you" probably refers to jocks/preps and ignorant arseholes like that.

Basically this song is telling them that the only reason that they think they're tough and act like a bunch of arseholes is because they're a bunch of rich, spoilt little shits who get everything they want and never have to face the consequences of their actions. It's saying that if they had to live in a 3rd world country like Cambodia they wouldn't last 5 seconds and the only reason that they think they're so tough and have so much confidence in themselves is because of the environment that they live in. It's basically a kick in the face to all those people. It's telling them that they're nothing; that their personality is just a product of their environment and the only reason that they act tough and are so up themselves is because they've had an easy life and are very ignorant and if they ever had to go through the hardship that the Cambodians did under Pol Pot they wouldn't be behaving they way they do.

System of a Down – ATWA Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song is about an activist who everybody ignores and his/her frustration over the issue. In this case, it was written about Charles Manson and his environmental activism (ATWA = Air Trees Water Animals) but it could be interpreted as about any activist.

"All the world I've seen before me passing by"

This is about how everyone is ignoring the activist.

"You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore"

This is about the activist's frustration over people ignoring him/her. The line "I don't feel it anymore" shows that he has given up on his cause because of people's lack of interest. Also, the angry tone used when Serj is singing it suggests that the activist is very angry over people's lack of interest to his cause.

Black Sabbath – N.I.B. Lyrics 18 years ago
At first, while listening to this song, I thought it was just a typical love song but when I heard the line "My name is Lucifer, please take my hand", I realised that it's about being tempted by the devil.

The song is written from the Devil's point of view in 2nd person as he is trying to tempt someone. The first three stanzas of the song involve Satan offering his "love" to somebody and trying to persuade them to accept it. The love, of course, symbolises the short term benefits of sin that Satan provides to fool people into worshipping him and ending up in Hell for eternity.

"Some people say my love can not be true"
This is about how people warn about being tempted by Satan or sin. Satan's "love" (temptation) is presented as a good thing (love) by him but it is not truly love as its purpose is to tempt people into sin so they can end up in Hell.

"I will give you those things you thought unreal
The sun, the moon, the stars all bear my seal"

As part of his temptation, Satan offers material wealth to fool people into commiting sins and worshipping him. He is saying that he could offer you big and magnificent things like the the sun, the moon and the stars. This is true as in the Bible, after Jesus spends 40 days in the desert, when Satan tempts him he offers Jesus to be the ruler of all kingdoms in exchange for worshipping him.

"Follow me now and you will not regret
Living the life you led before we met"

Persuading people to follow him and live a life of sin, telling them that they will not regret their previous lifestyle. It describes how they would gain a lot of things in the short-term and would be blinded by all these short-term benefits and would not be able to foresee the consequences of their actions (Hell).

"Forever with me 'till the end of time"

This basically describes how people who are tempted by Satan will end up in Hell with him until "the end of time"

"Now I have you with me under my pow'r
Our love grows stronger now with ev'ry hour"

The person is completely under Satan's control and becomes more evil with every passing hour.

"Look into my eyes, you'll see who I am
My name is Lucifer, please take my hand"

The person dies and ends up in Hell and Satan (Lucifer) reveals himself. He finally realises what he has done but it is too late.

Nirvana – In Bloom Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about Nirvana's young fans at the time who just listened to the music either because they liked it or because it was loud or because it was trendy at the time but couldn't understand or didn't bother to find out the meaning or message behind the songs.

It could also be referring to the people who listened to Nirvana's music but did the opposite of what the messages behind their songs were promoting. Kurt Cobain strongly believed in tolerance and was opposed to the whole "macho" attitude that many people around him had and he expressed these beliefs in many of his songs and interviews. On the liner notes of Incesticide he wrote "If you're a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, we don't want you to buy our records". Unfortunately, there were a lot of intolerant and "macho" people who listened to their music and went to their concerts and couldn't understand or just ignored Nirvana's message. In highschool, Kurt was bullied by the jocks because he was different and artistic and into music. Ironically, many jocks or people with that intolerant, "macho" attitude ended up listening to his music and going to his concerts. This was one of Kurt's biggest grievances especially after he became popular. He felt that the wrong people were listening to his music. He felt frustrated because he was putting out a message and people were just ignoring it. This song is probably about the irony of the situation.

"Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Reproductive glands"

I'm not sure what "Sell the kids for food" means. It could possibly be about their young audience buying their records. The other 3 lines are about growing up - specifically adolescence or puberty. The part about the weather and spring symbolises change and when juxtaposed against "reproductive glands" suggests that it symbolises puberty, as puberty is a time of change where the reproductive organs develop. Also the “weather changes moods” symbolises how puberty changes a person’s mood or the way they think.

The title “In Bloom” also symbolises puberty as it is a time of change in the body much like blooming is a time of change in a plant’s body. This basically describes how most of Nirvana’s fans were teenagers or young people.

“He's the one
Who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along”

He’s a fan who likes to sing along at concerts

“But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means”

Doesn’t know the meaning or message behind the songs.

Nirvana – Lithium Lyrics 18 years ago
This song seems to be about depression and finding God although I'm not quite sure as it contains a lot of symbolism like most of their other songs.

Now I know a lot of people are probably gonna say that these lyrics had no intended meaning and were written under the influence of drugs. This may be true but when I explain what they mean I'm talking about what they mean to me, not what they meant or didn't mean to Kurt Cobain.

Anyway, on to the meaning, I think this song is one huge comparison. Kurt is comparing the effects of finding God with the effects of anti-depressants or vice-versa. This is true because people often look to God when they are having problems in their life and it gives them hope and thus makes them happier like anti-depressants do.

The title of the song, 'Lithium', has two meanings -

1. A metallic element, 3rd in the periodic table.
2. The name of a medication used to treat bi-polar disorder or depression.

I'm assuming that Kurt meant the 2nd one as the first one is completely irrelevent to the song.

The narrator mentions the problems he has in his life in various lines but continues to say "That's OK" followed by a justification.

Eg. "I'm so ugly, that's OK
'Cause so are you"

"I'm so lonely, that's OK
I shaved my head and I'm not sad"

This describes the effects of the anti-depressants - the narrator acknowledges that he has problems but instead of being sad he is happy because of the effects of the anti-depressants.

The lines "I'm so happy 'cause today/I've found my friends, they're in my head" means that he is suffering from a mental illness and his friends are just hallucinations (hence the line "in my head") and he has now realised it after taking his medication (the lithium). This also describes the effects of anti-depressants (although I would say it's more like anti-psychotics in this case).

"Sunday mornin' is every day/For all I care"
This is the part where he compares the effects of the anti-depressants to finding God. It means that he feels like he's going to church every day and is happy like he’s found God.

“Light my candles in a daze
'Cause I've found God”

The “I’ve found God” is used to compare the effects of Lithium to finding God. It could either mean that the narrator took the anti-depressant and feels like he has found God or that the narrator has found God and feels like he just took lithium. Anyway, whichever way it is, the narrator is used to compare the two.

“And just maybe I'm to blame
For all I've heard but I'm not sure”

This line could mean that the narrator has become religious and is blaming himself for his problems because he believes that he brought them onto himself because of his sins but I’m not quite sure.

“I'm so excited, I can't wait
To meet you there and I don't care”

The “I’m so excited, I can’t wait to meet you there” part could mean that he is anxious to meet God in heaven after death. Although I’m not quite how the “and I don’t care” part fits in.

“I'm so horny, that's OK
My will is good”

No idea how this fits in. Could be about the sin of lust, maybe.

“I like it, I'm not gonna crack
I miss you, I'm not gonna crack
I love you, I'm not gonna crack
I kill you, I'm not gonna crack”

I have no idea what this part means. It could be about manic depression as ambeon mentioned. The “I’m not gonna crack” part could be expressing how he’s not going to change moods (that’s what manic depression does to you – makes you go through cycles of extreme depression and extreme happiness or mania) because he’s taking the lithium. Does anyone else have any idea what this part means?

Well, as you can see there are a few parts of the song that contradict my interpretation but it’s the best I could come up with considering this was probably written under the influence of drugs.
