This song seems rather strange for Funkadelic. It denounces sex and hedonism, while the rest of this album, and their catalog in general is a giant celebration of them!

Love this song. It's a bit different for Tull. Aside from the flute it could be an old Black Sabbath tune. Perhaps this is not so surprising considering Iommi briefly played with Tull.

It's not a quote, but the idea itself is certainly not new. I'd recommend the book "Everyday Zen" by Charlotte Joko Beck. There are many ways to interpret Buddhism, but she has largely inspired my take on it.

Modest Mouse – Custom Concern Lyrics 8 years ago
As for the "I don't feel at all like I fall" vs. "I don't feel at all like I thought" minor controversy - To me it sounds like the higher pitch voice is saying "fall" while Isaac is saying "thought" simultaneously. May not be right, but I'm gonna assume it is cause that's how I enjoy it the most :)

I presume "I don't feel at all like I fall." is a reference to dreaming. I think he's indirectly stating that his dreams are failing.

Awesome. I think it's about getting over inhibitions about different fetishes and having kinky sex. In addition to enjoying some funk of course.

I coulda sworn "We have come to help you cope" was "We have come to help you cum" The regular lyric works I guess hah

Ironic that a previous commenter listed global warming as a lie in response to an anti-oil company song. He is repeating the lie perpetuated by the big oil companies themselves... By the way, what exactly is the "aids" lie? Don't mistakenly believe every dissenting opinion just because you don't like those who spout the mainstream opinion.

Atheist – Mother Man Lyrics 9 years ago
Combining the fact that he dedicates the song to marijuana legalization, I think the "nature becomes illegal" thing is clearly about pot. Anyway, yes, of course the rest of the song is about man's rape of the natural world. The two ideas are not incompatible.

Pink Floyd – Echoes Lyrics 10 years ago
I totally agree with this interpretation. Sparing the details, the current leading scientific hypothesis for the origins of life is that it began near hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean. These hydrothermal vent ecosystems harbor the only life forms that don't in any way rely on sunlight for energy.

"And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's.
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light."

This early in life's history nothing else existed but these deep sea creatures, but some how they made it up towards the light, allowing endless diversity to form. The early creatures experienced a long process of evolution until we end up with us and the world as we know it.

The two strangers are bth part of this long unfolding chain of events, and are thus essentially one. "I am you and what I see is me"

"Almost everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes,
Inviting and inciting me
To rise.
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning."

This is again referring to sunlight. The "million bright ambassadors of morning" are photons of light. They reach us each morning, and not only drive us out of bed, but are ultimately responsible for the energy that organizes our cells and keeps us thinking and moving.

I just read this and it seemed worth adding. A microphone was actually involved in the monk burning himself.

"In English and Vietnamese, a monk repeatedly declared into a microphone, "A Buddhist priest burns himself to death. A Buddhist priest becomes a martyr." "

Primus – Arnie Lyrics 10 years ago
While I think the Hendrix and idea and the ironic idea (Chris R's) may be a apart of it. This song also makes me think of the Buddhist monk who protested the Roman Catholic persecution of Buddhist in Vietnam in the 1960's by burning himself to death. One of the teachings of Buddhism is that all of us are essentially one being, and a great achievement is to love all as one loves oneself. This could make the "God bless you" line not ironic, while the man burns himself alive to draw attention to the persecution at hand.

Primus – Restin' Bones Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the main point of the song is that if you live too hard you either die young or end up broken down and used up like the homeless man the narrator is smoking with.

"When I was your age I did it all,
more than many men could do
now my possessions are the ones I wear
on my back,
and this lighter I keep in my shoe "

submissions
Primus – Restin' Bones Lyrics 10 years ago
The initial smoke isn't specified. It could be anything... Marijuana, tobacco, whatever. The lyric you're referring to is "I'm restin' bones from amphetamines,
see they turned teeth to balsa wood " I doubt the man "resting his bones from amphetamines" is reflecting on smoking amphetamines while smoking them.

Skyclad – Alone In Death's Shadow Lyrics 10 years ago
My best guess is that this song is about homeless people. They're often looked down upon as worthless drunks and crazy people, but without any real understanding of who they actually are.

"Prisoners in a sterile vacuum - hearts that feel but dare not touch
The freak show in this callous circus - on parade so all may look"

They're right there in the middle of society, and feel like the rest of us, but their own shame and regular folk's disdain for them/fear of them keep them from ever trying to make normal human contact.

"Those who gaze upon the outcasts to taste how bitter life can be
Can't comprehend the pain you feel - their blinkered eyes will never see."

Many of us pass by these people, see them, maybe think "damn, it would suck to be in their place", then we move on with our lives. However, we really don't know how hard it is to live a life like that.

I know if I was homeless I'd be a huge drunk.

I think the Bible verses are inserted into the song to imply how so many of us (the Christians) preach loving kindness and care for the poor, but don't live by it.

I just can't figure the first verse into my interpretation.

Fairport Convention – Who knows where the time goes Lyrics 10 years ago
Wonderful song. It seems to be about accepting that things are the way they are and, having accepted reality, one may relax.

"Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time"

While laying and listening to the initial line, being an environmental scientist, I immediately started trying to think of actual physiological reasons a bird may realize the change of seasons. That, however, is completely missing the point. I let that go and was overcome with peace. Just letting the thought of life constantly unfolding flow through my mind. It needs no explanation.

So, the answer to "Who knows where the time goes?" is "Who cares?"

Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Lucky Man Lyrics 10 years ago
I interpret it as irony. The song goes to show how little material things mean in the grand scheme of things. He had all the physical pleasures he could ask for, but in the end he just died crying in the dirt. The line, "No money could save him" I think points towards this interpretation somewhat clearly. He's no lucky man.

Fairport Convention – Farewell, Farewell Lyrics 10 years ago
Each verse creates good imagery, but I'm not sure how they fit together. Nor do I understand what "cut the cloth" or "drink the light to be" mean, but it sure sounds good.

BTW it's "they loathe me" not "they love me". An important distinction.

This song is so pleasant. It's certainly among my favorite Fairport songs.

Megadeth – Endgame Lyrics 10 years ago
Well he's clearly talking about George Bush administration when he refers to the ex-president and the patriot act. I doubt the rest of the song is intended to refer to Obama specifically since it's very extreme and nothing like anything Obama has done. i think it's just talking about the potential of the slow corrosion of our rights that began about a decade ago.

David Bowie – Seven Years in Tibet Lyrics 11 years ago
"Seven Years in Tibet" is an autobiographical book. It details the travels of an Austrian member of the national socialist party who attempts to climb a mountain in the Himalayas. During the climb WWII starts and he happens upon some British troops who send him to a war prison. He eventually escapes and winds up in Tibet where he befriend the then child Dalai Lama. He experiences their peaceful Buddhist ways and realizes the shameful error of his past beliefs. After some time WWII ends and later Tibet is invaded by the Chinese, mirroring the cruelty of the Germans.

David Bowie – After All Lyrics 11 years ago
Great song. I particularly like the lines referring to adults as just older children. It makes me think about the social chaos of misunderstanding the world as a child. Then, as teenagers, you start to understand the world better. The average person at that point still has a very skewed of reality. Then upon adulthood humans are expected to be responsible and intelligent, but really they're no better than kids. In fact, they're just a more evolved and complicated form of the nonsense that is childhood. The world is full of insanity. Religion, which actually believes in magic, politics, a massive back and forth shifting of control via manipulation, tyrants who claim they are a god born under a double rainbow and say they have made 7 holes in one their first time ever playing golf, countries committed to destroying each other because we never really learned to share or respect our fellow man.

Judas Priest – Dreamer Deceiver Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is a combination of being about drugs and reaching enlightenment, as joaosousa said. The dreamer is a hallucinogen. The narrator is seeking an escape and goes on a trip.

We followed the dreamer through the purple hazy clouds
He could control our sense of time
We thought we were lost but no matter how we tried
Everyone was in peace of mind

Purple hazy clouds clearly refers to drug use. "He could control our sense of time" is also consistent as when tripping a moment could seem like a year and an hour can seem like a second. The next two lines are about the mixed reactions hallucinogens can induce, both incredible peace and confusion. When on the right path complete contentment is found and problems are put into perspective. The "single sonic sound" represents this enlightened state, which essentially is always there (vibrating constantly), and can sometimes be found, but is very hard to keep a hold of.

As George Clinton would say, free your mind and your ass will follow.
