not the nine o'clock news and a kick up the eighties were two other alternative comedy series, with the former predating the young ones. But all absolutely excellent. The songs about suggs being caught by a neighbour when buying condoms. |

Madness – Shut Up Lyrics

I was always told that this was about a bungled robbery which took place in the early days of Madness. Dont know if it involved any of the band members, people they knew or just an incident at the time. But i do know that the name'shut up' came form the original chorus which was scrapped because the song was too long. |

The rise of the 'new Town' in the mid 80's. The ideal way to live which brought drugs, gangs and racist violence. I pop at the tories and their beliefs of americanising the UK. |

I think this song is about trying to be true to yourself. Feeling how you want to feel rather than being told to be happy with your lot. |

The ultimate love song. You can keep your 'careless whispers' anyday. This was weller at his best. With Billy Chapmans sax solo too its a classic. All about that warm feeling generated when your in love. Absolutely amazing song. |

This is another 'state of the 80's' song, refer mainly to the threat of nuclear war which hung over our heads in that decade. The lyrics are fantastic. Two versions existing, the single version which was funky and upbeat, and the Cafe Bleu version which is haunting and delicate with wellers vocals and talbots grand piano playing. |

The Style Council – Long Hot Summer Lyrics

This song is gorgeous. Im surprised no other artist has ever covered it. Its about long lazy sunny days, relaxing, enjoying life. It should all be perfect but without the one you love it just passes you by. (The video was very 'gay' but im sure knowing Mr Weller it was all done tongue in cheek and aimed at those who called him and Mick gay back in the early days of the Style Council) |

Lenny Henry is brilliant as lead vocalist. Tells of the horrors of getting laughs by making a fool of your fellow man because of his/her race, colour and creed. This song always makes me laugh, especially when you think how politically correct we are nowadays. |

Such a powerfull song. Man inhumanity to man during the second world war. Concentration camps. But the twist with this song is in amongst all the pain and suffering there is a love story between two hopeless people. Very, very sad song! |

Couldnt agree more. So much regret in the lyrics, losing someone who meant so much, his first love, and probably over some silly misunderstanding. We would all love to be in that situation, starting anew. |

this song sums up the 80's. Thatcherism, USA dependancy, unemployement. But its got that upbeat rythm to get the message across. Why let others control our lives, what we do is up to us! |
