Delerium – Inner Sanctum Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this song is about death; specifically the fear of what comes after it. Is there anything on the other side, or is it just and endless expanse of...nothing?

I can just imagine a British soldier singing this to himself in a WWI trench, just before the Germans start attacking.

A little odd for a guy married to Gwyneth Paltrow to be singing about feeling lonely, isn't it?

Coldplay – Cemeteries of London Lyrics 11 years ago
Interesting info, LittleSkyLark. Though, I still have my own religious interpretation:

The song is about God, not the old testament, "do-what-I-say-or-you-go-to-Hell" God that Christian fundamentalists love so much, but the actual Creator. The ones "looking through the dark roads for God in their own way" are those that with a death grip on their Bibles (or Korans, in some cases) and refuse to believe that God would be kind, merciful, and loving to those that don't fall into their own narrow interpretation of what God is.

In order for one to really "find God," they have to step off the beaten path, away from those twisting the idea of God to suit their own ends, and search on their own. God is in the houses, and god is in your head, the cemetaries of London, and everywhere else for that matter. God is everywhere, right? But to really "find" him, your heart must be open, not filled with intolerance for others.

But sadly,"there's no light over London today." People still cling to their old superstitions and ignorance of what God is, still think of him as being the man behind some set of Pearly Gates who will rain death and destruction on all the non believers one day, and it's not like that at all.

I wish Beck would do an album as crazy as Stereopathic Soulmanure at least one time in his career, just because he's never done anything that crazy since.

Beck – People Gettin' Busy Lyrics 12 years ago
From the album Golden Feelings.

I always looked at the album as each song being done from the point of view from someone whose crappy situation is life is pushing him to insanity.

And by the time we get to this song (last on the album), the "protagonist" has lost touch with reality completely, and is now simply wandering up and the streets of his town, a silly grin forever frozen on his face.

The extra noise that plays after the song only confirms this.

Radiohead – Arpeggi Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is about someone who puts their faith in an attractive illusion, only to be betrayed by it later.

Beck – Johnny Depp Lyrics 13 years ago
Yep, Alamo got it. Beck had something of a grudge with Johnny Depp back in the day. Not sure if he still does, but this song was written out of it. He only did this song live a few times, and never did it again.

Beck – Aphid Manure Heist Lyrics 13 years ago
Okay, here's the story. That really is Beck singing. It was a cover of a song by some guy named Waylon Jennings. It struck Beck as funny to distort his voice the way he does in this song, so he did, and a part of that cover is what we hear on Stereopathic Soulmanure. The nonsensical title is just meant to be joke on Beck's part.

Beck – 8.6.82 Lyrics 13 years ago
The mystery, solved at last! As said by Beck himself in a 2002 interview for Record Collector Magazine...

"Beck: I had a microcassette recorder and I was fooling around one day and I started talking into it making up stories and then hit ?stop? by mistake and had to start again but it sounded great the way it just cut off, the way the kid was talking and then it had a high-speed mode and I sort of just discovered this character and I just started telling stories into it like it was a diary. So I started using it [during] my shows, I?d talk about this kid and I?d found this tape and this was his diary, and use little snippets between songs. A couple of them made it onto that record, I had a whole cassette full and I played it at a show in Seattle around that time and someone jumped up on stage after I?d left the stage and grabbed the tape recorder. All those stories are lost, but a couple of them survived on that record."

There you are.

Beck – Heartland Feeling Lyrics 13 years ago
A song that is both hilarious and tragic at the same time, as it narrates the life story of so many who will end up like those in this song. Nothin' happenin'...that's about it.

submissions
Beck – Bad Energy Lyrics 13 years ago
From Golden Feelings, which I guess could be considered a concept album.

With each song on Golden Feelings, the "narrator" appears to be slowly going more insane and falling deeper into despair, especially in this song right here. That voice is all in his head.

Beck – Special People Lyrics 13 years ago
A song from Beck's first and mostly forgotten album, "Golden Feelings." Like every song on that album, this song is from the point of view of someone who's slowly losing touch with reality, because their life totally sucks. If you look at Golden Feelings in its entirety from that perspective, what sounds like the mad ramblings of a psycho seem to make more sense.

Beck – 1000 BPM Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's the correct lyrics.

Electronic eye vision magnetic
Corrupted files from galactical planets
Write a new genetic code
Thoughts get transported
From neanderthal skulls
Digital food malls
Telemarkting people with cellular headsets on their skulls
Selling you wisdom
From a plexiglass prism
Biochemical jism
Gets you into this rythym
They act like earth was terrestrial prison
A zoo for humans put their cities in
ruins
Now we can feel what were doing
Renew the stratosphere and wonder out aloud
Spastic, what else can the dust try to tell us?

Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute

Catogorize the antichrist credentials
And a backstage pass
Gasoline in a flask
Tried to pull off his mask
But it was really his face
Repackaged meat from a plant with
Security cameras strapped to his back
Failed perscriptions, antidotes
Media in a quarantine submission
Consultants revoke their souls with
Unanimous votes
Portions of the proceeds go to chain store victims
In remission
With remodeled kitchens

Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute
Coming to you 1000 beats per minute

Honestly, at least check on beck.com before you post one of his songs...

This sounds like it came from Midnight Vultures. It's a totally fun and stupid song about how chaotic and senseless the world is becoming.

Beck – The Information Lyrics 13 years ago
Oops, I posted the wrong lyrics. Sorry! Here's the correct version.

The information is laughing at us
The ticker tape feeds the mind
Looking for a lost transmission
A heaven that we left behind
When the information comes
We'll know what we're made from
And the skyline rising
Highrise eyes see through you

Say hello to a mannequin
The ghost of an automaton
The witching hour summoned
Armies in a desert sun

When the information comes
We'll know what we're made from
The skyline rising
Highrise eyes see through you

She's the sister of avarice
A wife of a poisonous tide
She's the eye of a battle of storms
She sees where the atoms collide
When the information comes
We'll know what we're made from
The skyline rising
Highrise eyes see through you

Beck – The Fucked Up Blues Lyrics 13 years ago
By chance, I had the oppurtunity to hear this and all the songs on Golden Feelings. For those not aware, that was Beck's very first album, and was never available on CD. I have to say that on Beck's 1st work, he sounds just as crazy as he does on most of Stereopathic Soulmanure. Just a little warning to those looking to track down this album.

Anyway, this song, and nearly every song on the album is a snapshot of life from the point of view of a low income slacker who's being driven crazy by their crappy lot in life.

Beck – The Horrible Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton Lyrics 13 years ago
I like the first part the most. Here's what I think each part is about.

The Horrible Fanfare: Someone takes a look at the world, and is convinced that we're at the end times. Everything is falling into chaos, and nothing can be done, but then...

Landslide: He meets someone, and inspired by her example, decides that there's still some corner of this chaotic world that he can preserve for himself. Though not entirely certain he's correct in that regard, he sets out to prove himself right. But...

Exoskeleton: Director Spike Jonze is one of the psychos talking about spaceships here. But the spiraling, unsettling melodic textures of this part are what counts. They're meant to indicate the uncertainty of a question raised from the first two parts. Is there really something left worth standing up for. Maybe not, but then again, maybe...

Beck – Inside Out Lyrics 13 years ago
This just may be my favorite Beck song. I love the optimistic melody, juxtaposed with the melancholy lyrics.
The song seems to be about someone who's given up on everything, and just wants to be left alone as he sinks down into his own apathy.

Radiohead – Down Is the New Up Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree that this song is about media distortion. "Orwellian Flip-Flop" may refer to how in 1984, the country that Eurasia was at war with was subject to change without notice.

We're being told in the media to give up our freedoms for safety (from terrorism). Normally, you wouldn't surrender your freedoms to anyone, but we're being told that's a good thing. Hence, bad is the new good, and down is the new up. Alles klarr?

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree about the earlier comment about the song being about being judged at the Pearly Gates, the videotape being the record of his deeds that will decide whether he gets in or not.

He says "this will be on my videotape," because he knows that this relationship (could have been romantic, or just friendship) he's singing about will definitely be one of the shining spots on his record. He did all he could for this other person, and he's not sorry at all.

Thom Yorke – The Drunkk Machine Lyrics 14 years ago
When I first heard it, I immediately thought "oh, he's slamming government again." Then I thought he may actually be referencing corporate advertising. In other words, don't listen to these people, drunk on their own wealth, who spit nonsense to get you to buy their product! And who put those people in charge anyway, since most corporations hold more power then any given government?

submissions
Thom Yorke – Iluvya Lyrics 14 years ago
While this song probably doesn't mean anything, it means something to me.

The phrase "I love you" loses its meaning if it's repeated too often. These days, you find "I love you" printed on greeting cards, premade e-mails, boxes of chocolate, teddy bears...

To me, the mechanical voice programmed to repeat "I love ya" states that "I love you" no longer holds any meaning. It's been turned into little more then a tagline to move product.

submissions
Radiohead – Dollars and Cents Lyrics 14 years ago
I've heard this song live a few times, and Thom apparently really does NOT want anyone to know what he's saying in between "quiet down" and "we are the dollars and cents." He does he best to mumble it out to the point where no one can understand.

Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates Lyrics 14 years ago
It seems like this song is dedicated to anyone that ever thought their country is being run by a bunch of freaking idiots.

Politicians make their pretty speeches, while the rest of us are either cut to shreds or fed to the lions, the remains then tossed into the muddy river. The "I'm living in cloud cuckoo land" refers to how the singer feels like he's living in another world, because the people in charge are doing everything except what they should be doing.

Oh, and anyone that hasn't heard this song backwards yet, try here.

Thom Yorke – Cymbal Rush Lyrics 14 years ago
I have a feeling that this song was what the CD cover was based on, and if a literal cymbal rush really does sound like crashing waves, that furthers that idea.

I think this song is about the end of the world. The world is ending because all the problems we humans, as a species, should have taken care of earlier (hence "you should've took me out when you had the chance") have all trickled together into one huge unstoppable wave, from which there is no escape.

Basically, I think Yorke is saying we need to turn things around now, before it's too late.

Massive Attack – Blue Lines Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, I love that last line too.

The song (poem, really) kinda goes all over the place, like the guys are all trying to tell a story, but not really paying attention to if it all makes sense.

At it's heart, though, the song is about love, and how difficult it can be for two people to truly understand each other.

Beck – Little One Lyrics 14 years ago
This is such a sadly beautiful song, and a big part of why Sea Change is my favorite Beck album.

My interpretation of the song agrees with calvinit21's for the most part. It's about someone who so desperately wants to protect their little one from the world, but they can't. They try to delude themself into thinking they can, but as the situation keeps getting worse, they have to finally admit they were a fool for trying.

All they can say is "Little one, hold on..." and pray for the best, even when they know the worst is much more likely.

submissions
Beck – Already Dead Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is a big part of why I love Sea Change so much. Unlike in previous albums, where the lyrics were mostly nonsense, almost every song on this album has a fairly specific meaning.

This song is about knowing that a relationship is already dead, and nothing can be done to save it. All you can do now is watch it die.

Radiohead – Worrywort Lyrics 14 years ago
Here's what I think. The song is about someone, a worrywort, who never had the courage to go and do what they really wanted. All they can do is sit around and feel sorry for themself. They try to convince themself it couldn't have happened any other way, but they know that's a lie. It's such a beautiful day, but they don't have it in them to go out and seize it.
