Serj Tankian – Left of Center Lyrics 14 years ago
"Definitely an anti religious song, but Singdongdingdong went WAY too far...interjecting his/her atheistic opinion into the lyrics. Your bias is unbelievable."

Understandably I may be biased and am interjecting my own views on life into my interpretation of the lyrics, as is pretty given with most personal interpretations. I wouldn't go so far as to say my bias is "unbelievable", taking an anti-religious song and reading what I see as anti-religious statements and metaphors seems pretty straightforward.

------------------

"You gave more of a speech on YOUR feelings on faith rather than an interpretation of what the artist created. Perhaps you shoudn't have tried your hand at analyzing after watching such a television show."

That's true, but mind you that lyrics don't need to have one-sided rigid meanings that mean the same thing to everyone. A clear-cut and simple lyric can mean a lot of different things to different people with a different background and a different states of mind, whereas a vague lyric opens up a whole realm of possible interpretations. My interpretation is but one of the many that are possible. Serj himself states frequently that he prefers to have his lyrics open to personal interpretation.

------------------

"A "theocracy" is not run by 'like god'; rather God."

You are wrong. The greek word "theos" means a deity or a god, and is not specific to YHWH, the Judeo-Christian god who is generally referred to as "God". Therefore, the word theocracy means "a government run by a deity", not "run by the Judeo-Christian god".

------------------

"With your next breath you show your bias and thus discredit yourself: "so we are just some fantasy." You just lost any credibilty with regard to objectivity that you may have had (MAY:) Then you state that because we are not "holy," we cannot be created by God. Haven't read the Bible much I see. We are His fallible children, and I have a feeling you do know the meaning of the word 'fallible." We aren't supposed to be holy!"

Ironically, I could say the same thing about your biases in this statement. I was clearly not aiming for objectivity so it's hard to say I have lost any credibility, but if you were aiming for objectivity yourself, then you've thrown that out of the window. Ignoring that, as it is irrelevant to the interpretation, I'll explain more closely what I meant by this part.

If we believe we were created by God, we're really believing in nothing more than a fantasy. We have our hero and nemesis, our beginning, middle and end. We have pure good and pure evil alongside absolute moral truths. Our conception of the world is based on a bronze age fantasy book and he only thing holding this conception together is our suspension of disbelief, because the story is not factual and contradicts what is actually true. It is not true, it is a fantasy. If we are nothing more than characters in a fantasy novel, we are a fantasy.

You criticize my interpretation of "we are far from holy", because according the Bible humanity is fallible. I don't deny that, but holy here doesn't have to mean that humanity is infallible, just that there is no infallible being responsible for our creation. There is no holy creator behind our existance. Nothing we do is holy - holy is just a made up idea based on the assumption of there being a god. The way I see it, there is absolutely nothing holy about anything, hence "we are far from holy".

------------------

"We're so blinded by religion that we're just plain ignorant, you say. So only the religious are ignorant. Wow, so much for tolerance and objectivity:) Funny, but I've met some awfully ignorant atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists."

You misconstrued what I said again. Clearly not only the religous are ignorant; most people are ignorant about most things. To name a few things we have political ideologies, personal bigotry such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. Religious ignorance is but one type of ignorance, but I'd argue that it's one of the worst type of ignorance. When reality comes knocking on your door, sometimes you have to let go of your cherished fantasies. The problem with religious ignorance is that there's no reality check, hence I connect this lyric with "Creation vs. Evolution". The scientific method has conclusively shown us that the creation myth as written in the Bible is empirically false, while mountains over mountains of evidence have been discovered that all support the theory of evolution. Reality has shown us what is true and what is false. Along comes religious ignorance; truth is ignored to sustain fantasy.

------------------

"Hmmmmm...I like being "blinded" by my faith yet I fight no wars and I've killed no one. Geesh, believe in abortion as an Atheist? So you've killed or supported killing and yet you are not a person of faith? Hmmmmm again. Nope, not wasting our time if we truly believe in God and try to live the best life possible...forgiving others; feeding and clothing the poor; providing shelter to needy families; visiting the elderly and infirmed in nursing homes; etc etc etc. How quickly the Atheist (not all) forget all the good that those of faith do BECAUSE of their belief in that mythical god you ridicule. Do me a favor and open any phone book to see a listing of all the atheistic groups doing volunteer work in the community:) Well, you got one thing correct. We do all end. For your sake I hope there is no God. How 'bout next time you keep your ugly bias to yourself."

What you said here is completely irrelevant to the lyric and my interpretation of it and is really just a rant about how much you misunderstand and/or hate atheism. You start off with an anecdote: "I haven't killed anyone, therefore blind faith has never been used to justify wars". This is a logical blunder. Then you bring in a distinct moral debate (abortion), somehow manage to compare it with war, and use your own personal bias to try to make a point about the morality of a atheists. This is another logical blunder. Then you resort to more anecdotes to try to make another moral point about the religious vs. non-religious. This is yet another logical blunder and has been refuted by people more reasonable than myself. What you said here is really just your own prejudice against atheism speaking, so I'm very amused by your closing statement of keeping my bias to myself.

Driftless Pony Club – A Letter To Michael Lyrics 14 years ago
Like other songs on this album, the song is inspired by Buckminster Fuller. This one is based on a letter he wrote to a 10 year old boy named Michael. Michael had written to him and asked whether he was a "thinker" or a "doer". This is the reply:

--------------------

Dear Michael,

Thank you very much for your recent letter concerning ”thinkers and doers.”

The things to do are: the things that need doing: that you see need to be done, and no one else seems to see need to be done. Then you will conceive your own way of doing that which needs to be done – that no one else has told you to do or how to do it. This will bring out the real you that often gets buried inside a character that has acquired a superficial array of behaviors induced or imposed by
others on the individual.

Try making experiments of anything you conceive and are intensely interested in. Don’t be disappointed if something doesn't work. That is what you want to know – the truth about everything — and then the truth about combinations of things. Some combinations have such logic and integrity that they can work coherently despite non-working elements embraced by their system. Whenever you come to a word with which you are not familiar, find it in the dictionary and write a sentence which uses that new word. Words are tools – and once you have learned how to use a tool you will never forget it. Just looking for the meaning of the word is not enough. If your vocabulary is comprehensive, you can comprehend both fine and large patterns of experience.

You have what is most important in life – initiative. Because of it, you wrote to me. I am answering to the best of my capability. You will find the world responding to your earnest initiative.

Sincerely yours,
Buckminster Fuller

Driftless Pony Club – Inspector Of Inspectors Lyrics 14 years ago
Like other songs on this album, the song is inspired by Buckminster Fuller. As far as I can see, the song in its entirety is based on various opinions and ideas he expressed about society and the individual's ability to influence it. For those who are interested, Buckminster Fuller's page on Wikiquote gives us the following information:

--------------------

"Call me Trimtab" is the inscription on his headstone. On a ship, the trimtab is a small but crucial part of a the rudder mechanism, which controls the direction of the vessel; on an aircraft it is a small adjustable tab on the trailing edge of the elevator control surface set by the pilot to trim the aircraft in a steady and level orientation. This use for his epitaph comes from statements he had made in life, including an interview with Barry Farrell in Playboy (February 1972):

"Something hit me very hard once, thinking about what one little man could do. Think of the Queen Mary – the whole ship goes by and then comes the rudder. And there's a tiny thing at the edge of the rudder called a trimtab.

It's a miniature rudder. Just moving the little trim tab builds a low pressure that pulls the rudder around. Takes almost no effort at all. So I said that the little individual can be a trimtab. Society thinks it's going right by you, that it's left you altogether. But if you're doing dynamic things mentally, the fact is that you can just put your foot out like that and the whole big ship of state is going to go.

So I said, call me Trimtab."

--------------------

In his book "I Seem To Be a Verb" you'll find the quote:

"I live on Earth at present, and I don't know what I am. I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing – a noun. I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process – an integral function of the universe."

Another thing Buckminster had written on the subject of categorizing people is:

"As a consequence of the slavish "categoryitis" the scientifically illogical, and as we shall see, often meaningless questions "Where do you live?" "What are you?" "What religion?" "What race?" "What nationality?" are all thought of today as logical questions. By the twenty-first century it either will have become evident to humanity that these questions are absurd and anti-evolutionary or men will no longer be living on Earth."

--------------------

"We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian-Darwinian theory, he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living."

- The New York Magazine Environmental Teach-In" by Elizabeth Barlow in New York Magazine (30 March 1970), p. 30

--------------------

"Dare to be naïve" was the motto of Buckminster Fuller; used in many of his speeches and writings, including Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking (1975).

--------------------

"Don't fight forces, use them."
- Shelter (1932) sometimes quoted as "Don't oppose forces, use them."

Serj Tankian – Wings of Summer Lyrics 14 years ago
When listening to this song a beautiful image stuck in my head - the image of a man and a woman sitting naked under a tree on a beautiful summer day, in perfect harmony with nature. This image developed into the story of Adam and Eve. You all know their story: it's the story of the people who had everything they needed, but wanted more.

You know the story of the serpent. He put his eyes on Eve as he tempted her. He promised her that she could fly on the wings of summer. Eve goes and perfects her fall as she puts her eyes on Adam. She smiles for him. He trusts her. They don't realise what they have today, because tomorrow's menu reads 'forever'.

They want to fly on the wings of summer, but then God comes and lays his eyes on them. Adam doesn't confess to his crime and blames it on Eve, his concubine. Eve blames the serpent and thought she'd gotten clever when God wheeled them in and pulled the lever.

They've now been cast out of Eden, when they realise that they had already been flying on the wings of summer. Now they have nothing but each other. They also have a hummer, apparently. That is the story of their son, Cain. He murdered his brother Abel for putting his eyes on the divine.

And that's the story: The story of the arguably loving God who clipped of their wings and banished them forever. The story of the great fall of mankind. The story of the beginning of forever.

Serj Tankian – Gate 21 Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with Musicophile, except it doesn't neccesarily have to be Serj speaking for himself. The lyrics may be portraying the feelings of a character who is going through grief.

As I see it, the narrator has decided he wants to spend the rest of his life with someone, for example by marriage. They spend a big part of their lives together despite pain and doubt, because they believe their love will survive.

Then his spouse wants a divorce. The rest is, in my opinion, what goes through his mind as he desperately tries to cling on to the life they could've had together. The design was to spend their lives together, but now they've broken the mold so he begs her to stay with him to the borders of destiny (forever). You could argue that as the song climaxes, he frantically jumps back and forth between the five stages of grief:

Denial: "I can't think that it's all over." "I want to repress your goodbye."
Anger: "Do you think that you don't need me, do you wanna deceive me?"
Bargaining: "Please follow me to the borders of destiny."
Depression: "The falling ground screams goodbye."
Acceptance: "The dreams when you see that goodbyes aren't for long."

Serj Tankian – Left of Center Lyrics 14 years ago
A few days ago I was watching to some Creation vs Evolution debate on TV, and then later that night I listened to this song. While I was listening, I realised that the lyrics fit the whole religious debate pretty well. Naturally, this may or may not be Serj's intentional meaning, but it my interpretation and feels right to me. Allow me to explain:

The song starts off pretty straight-forward. Theocracy, according to Wikipedia, is basically a government run in the name of some devine entity, like God. So are we just some fantasy, made up by and governed by some god?

No. We are far from holy - that is, we weren't created by a god. Instead we should believe in the wholeness of one, that is - in ourselves. That's what we are, essentially: We are living entities, and as such we are one, but not the creations of a god.

We lost the key of sight. We're so blinded by our religion that we're just being plain ignorant. We aren't loved by a god, far from it. He doesn't exist.

So what do we do when we're blinded by our religion? We fight wars, we kill, we debate, we go to great lenghts to destroy the opposition to defend our mythical creatures, or should I say: our vampires? We're bombing people (literally and metaphorically) for their ignorance of having the "wrong religion", and defeating their insolence. Is it going too far? I believe so.

Then what if a religious fanatic dies and realizes that the life that he lived for what he believed was a waste of time? What if there is no afterlife? Then we're clearly wasting our time doing something that doesn't matter. So what does it all boil down to? We're just going forward and backwards, we live, we breathe, we see, we cry and finally we die. The end.

Serj Tankian – Disowned Inc. Lyrics 15 years ago
I feel this song has a strong contrast with other songs on the album - especially Borders Are. We can look at this song as two (neighboring or not) countries, separated by either a border or a long distance.

In fact, if you read the lyrics, thinking of this song as a country singing to/about another country (for example United States singing to Iraq, Israel singing to Pakistan, North Korea singing to South Korea, or vice versa).

The two countries are essentially the same - we're all people, with rights, feelings and religion - but won't admit it. We will always believe we are better than the other one, laughing at our neighbor and pretend we're the ones who are sane, though we're essentially the same.

We all exist in the same time, but in different space. We therefore all have the same father, but due to the void that is our mother, we're distant from each other. So, we're all brother and sisters, but we resist the fact that we're the same - we're persistent in our belief that we're not.

Now we turn to the other country, singing to the first one. It felt so alone before you came and stopped the pain, but eventually made the rain pour on them. Now it feels alone again, because of your disdain. Your children - your people - decided to start a war against it in your name.

But the conclusion is, that the fact that we're different is merely an illusion. We're all the same, though we don't necessarily give our gods the same name - we're all human beings, why can't we accept that?

ShyBoysWinXO:
"[Most] black people are a burden to scociety, think about it.
Not it's not about "the unfair gvernment" it's about them standing on the corner selling drugs and shooting innocent people to "look hard"."

Good point, but do you know who else do that? Us white people. A lot of the most infamous murderers of all time were white, for example. White criminals sell drugs, break into houses, mug, rob and kill people just the same as black criminals. Some white people are even worse than black people because they think they're so "superior" that they can get away with everything. And sometimes they do. Every race has a f*ckload of criminals, so saying that there are black people who commit crime is like saying the sky is blue.

This song bears a strong resemblance to "(I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight" by Cutting Crew. Could it possibly be an modified cover of that song, or something?

Don't take that as if I'm criticizing the song or anything, this is a really good song, and if it's a cover- then it's a hell of a good cover..!

Static-X – Machine Lyrics 19 years ago
It happens to sound than Wayne Static's song have a great deal about changes- My guess is that he may have suffered through many dramatic changes in his life, and in this song that he's trying to force the changes out, but he can't and is turning into something less than human, a 'machine'.

"Get into my hidden demon
Get out of my swollen head
Shines down on blackened faces
Changing at your expense"

This part does confuse me though, but I'd say it's Static saying "Get away, stop trying to change me, it will come down on both of us and I'll make you regret it."

That, or the lyrics are absolutely random but sound cool. =)

Static-X – Dirthouse Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, I kinda agree to you, Renegade. And this song, along with the rest of the album makes me think of Wayne as he is expressing how sick he is of certain things.

I'd say in this song it's not unlike as in "I Want To Fucking Break It", and he hates the effects people who want to see him fail have on him.

In the song "Just In Case", he says somebody makes him feel like a dog. So basically the "dogs" in this song are him, and he's curled up in a little ball and can't do anything about it- and his existance (skin and mind) are turning into "fucking dirt".

That's my interpretation of this song. I sure hope Wayne isn't as depressed of a guy as some of his songs seem to imply though. o.O;

Static-X – So Lyrics 19 years ago
This is easily my favourite Static-X song, and like a lot of them with such simple, yet strongly effective lyrics. When I listen to this song I kind of think about the emotional and embarrassing gap that appears every time you have a fight with someone you love.

Rather simple meaning, actually.
I doubt there are any double meanings in it too.

And, GhostWishing, I notice that you made that post 2 years ago but I'm still gonna point out that this is a site for lyrics interpretations- EVEN for the most simplest of songs. Even instrumental tracks get interpreted on here.

So, GhostWishing- fuck you, asshole and get a life.

Lordi – Devil Is a Loser Lyrics 19 years ago
I'd say the lyrics have a rather comedic lyrics and for Lordi to tell that his monster image is so above the devil, that the devil is his bitch. :D

But like, the other parts where they say you wanted this but you got that, is probably either that you're doing everything wrong and you brought everything bad over yourself by thinking you can get everything for nothing and end up with all your dreams unfulfilled.

The Doors – The Celebration Of The Lizard Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is like a story. The Doors tried recording it in studio many times but never got happy with the results, so it only exists live... or I'm pretty sure it only exists live.

I'm not sure where I heard this, but Jim Morrison once said that Lizards or Snakes are a symbol of our fear, and yet a symbol of everything we want, power.

But no matter how much I try to interpret the lyrics in this song, I trip over my own feet, if so to say... it kind of doesn't make sense. Not everything Jim Morrison said and wrote made sense, but I know this song is full of meanings.

The go insane part is simple, it's straight forward just about going insane, losing yourself deep into the brain, and the Not To Touch The Earth could be about escaping it, escaping what you've gotten yourself into. Honestly, I think the "beast" in this song is you, and "you're your own worst enemy".

One thing I don't understand is why this song is on Wikipedia's List Of Songs About Masturbation (on 07. 14. 06 at least)

Lordi – Would You Love a Monsterman? Lyrics 19 years ago
I'd say that this song, is with a mixture of Lordi's whole monster theme, means how people look down on some people just because they're different in one way or another and how much pain it can cause sometimes.

"I would do it all for you, would you do it all, do it all for me"

Like there, I would say it means that the person treated different can be a nice person, who would help you even if you treat them bad, but you not do anything in return.

"You can't deny - You crucify
Would you get down in the gutter
Swallowing your pride"

So, my conclusion is that this song is somewhat about how people treat people differently and even ignore people completely, like they're below their dignity.

Lordi – Hard Rock Hallelujah Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm kinda surprised that this song has gotten 27 comments and no one's even thought of putting what they think the song means... xD
-----
"Lost are the lambs with no guiding light"
"The true believers thou shall be saved"
"Striking down the prophets of false"
"In God's creation supernatural high"
"Not quite an angel or the one that fell"
-----
I wouldn't say I'm the biggest christian out there, but I know that this is of some of the things found in the Bible. Not to mention that Mr. Lordi and Kita are christian I would guess this song to have a christian meaning inside of it. Also, when Mr. Lordi declined the accusations of their band being Satanic, he said "A Satanic band would never write songs such as Devil is a Loser and Hard Rock Hallelujah!"

and in the "The saints are crippled" part, It kinda sounds like they're making fun of Catholics. ;D

So that's my guess; Christian message, added with a bit of the power of rock n' roll.

The Doors – L.A. Woman Lyrics 20 years ago
This is one funny story I heard about that song:

Jim Morrison was apparently very very deppressed at one point and the band members simply couldn't get him to sing. It was driving them nuts. But once (probably on a trip to L.A.) they were sharing a hotelroom. Jim Morrison took a shower.

And whaddaya know,
he sung this song, L.A. Woman.

Then the band members brought microphones and started recording him singing the song, and made music to it. Turns out to be one of The Doors' best songs. xDDD

It's an awesome song.
