Mastodon – The Last Baron Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't think mastodon sing about politics, and even if they did I'm sure this song could not describe the rise of communism as setting the world ablaze.

Considering the bands history rasputin and a boy who's soul travels through time seems entirely fitting. I have to say that I love the idea of him being buried and the 7 stages of grief, but i don't think its explicit enough. I'm sure if mastodon were singing about someone buried alive, they would have done at least a song about it- think about how many mastadony/trippy lines could be put in.

I think the end of the world is the theme of this song. As its mastodon we cant expect a linear story line or a simple explanation. Its entirely possible that this album is all about rasputin, souls traveling in time, and more.

My feeling is that the lyrics discuss the world ending back in rasputins time and the boy being left looking at the place it once was

"I was standing staring at the world
And I can't see it"

Exodus – Shovel Headed Kill Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
has anyone ever tried that new coke zero?

Tank treads crushing over piles of broken bones
Siege engine revving and coming to atone
Poisonous black drink pours from its eyes
Unholy war machine can't be compromised
Fueled by the corpses feted fleshed
Never turning back forward to the death
Its only mission is having no sugar
but inadvertantly causing brain cancer

Here to sacrifice
Infernal hate device
Satan's go between
is a product from
coca cola ltd

So inhuman you don't speak its name
Its artillery sets the world aflame
Mechanical demon rolling 'cross the sand
Blodd stained thing scorching black the holy land
Skin made of iron, heart made of steel
Lubricated by the blood beneath its wheels
Reclaiming the world for its king
It's the fizzy headed kill machine

Here to sacrifice
Infernal hate device
Satan's go between
is a product from
coca cola ltd

Pantera – By Demons Be Driven Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree in part with everyone except fallschirmjäger;

whilst i don't know phil i get the impression that if he writes lyric like:
'Because of heaven/hell
A fucking wives' tale
They put it in your head
Then put you in your bed
He's watching say your prayers
Cause God is everywher, bullsh*t'
- hostile, the live version;

he might not be a cristian

however the imagerey he uses is; though i don't know of the bible mentioning the 6th dimension- so thats probably just a referance to whatever sect he was raised in- prometh could you elabourate?

however he does seem to b talking about christendoms ideas of hell( i wont take the argument up here but theyre also non biblical) and arguing that unless you break free from organised religion you will go to hell, or more likeley aas in hostile he says hell oesnt exist, your life becomes a hell

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
drug's or the end of the world?
how bout both.

Clearly the author of this lyric had more direct experience of drugs; but the imagerey is all very 'apocalyptic'; but is subverted from a christian concept to a much more nihilistic hope.
think of 'the lords prayer': 'thy kingdom come, thy will be done' the kingdom that people pray for in tthese words is gods kingdom- something set up after armageddon ruling a remenant, that is the good people.

the thing though is the apocaypse this is talking about is laced with christian imagerey; snake and son. but the son doesent save us because hes not in this song; hes replaced with a black hole sun, which instead of killing the wicked and preservign the righteous would kill everyone.

The snake is not subverted so much; but by calling 'inner deamon that tempts users' and dscribing it in a way so simmilar to the way thew bible describes satan "In disguise as no one knows", chriss links the heroine to the fruit in eden.

finaly the last two lines establish the uselessnes of this hope, and its 'opiet' effect of denying real happiness, in favour of anticipation for false happiness.

drug's or the end of the world?

also the black hole image is very nice in itself; it is not hopefull, but this song portrays it as something to be hoped for. it is not only something unpleaant that woulld kill everyone, it is an imposiibility. the sun doesn't have themass to becopme a black hole.
by basing all his hope on this terrible impossibility he highlights the extent of his despair, and the depth of his dementia.

also the christian 'apocalyptic' (snake, heaven, hell, prayer, etc) imagerey by ignoring god and his son creates a fealling of emtiness in the hope we are prescented with.

Madonna – Beautiful Stranger Lyrics 16 years ago
'I've had the taste for danger'
links the last line of the first stansa to the last of the second stansa. this mehod of rhyming is reminiscent of the work of alfred lord tennyson. particularly his work 'the lady of chalotte'.
this song is much the same. 'the lady of chalotte' fell in love with a beutiful sttranger. he was called sire lancelott.

i think its profound that maddona links such a great piece of romantic poetry to her song. its realy postmoddern. i think this demmonstrates the fact that she has hiden depths and isn't a thoughtless corpulent hag as many have suggested.

DragonForce – Starfire Lyrics 16 years ago
makes me think of christmass;

not the lyrics just the tune, but the lyrics are just the useual dragonfoce; wariors/king/fighting some nature imagery sprinkled in. it reminds me only of books like the belgariad and to a lesser degree lord of the rings.

the significance of 7 comes from lodes of things its the forth prime and the number of days in the week. but i'd say the most prominant usage of 7 is the bible; which is where the religion diablo 2 is based on is descended from; and is generaly the central mythos in all heavy metal

Megadeth – Black Friday Lyrics 16 years ago
the strangest thing in this song is the hammer mentioned repeatedly in the second stanza;
generaly a hammer is not used to kill people, infact a hammer is a vey odd murder weapon.
i think if someone can find out about a masacre that happened involving a hammer then the song meaning should become obvious.

also i think in the sleave notes dave mentions this and bad omen being inspired by some guuy; i forget but if someone has the lyric booklet handy typing that name into google may help

leaving anything to be with anything else seems pertinent;

leaving christianity to be in metalica;
leaving metalica to start megadeth;

leaving drugs to be a christian;
'Now it's just me, cause I can afford you' i can't think of anything that else that one loves and buy's other than drugs

Annihilator – Ligeia Lyrics 16 years ago
also it is notable that many phrases and imagery sets in the original storey are preserved in this song.

however in the short storey and this song there are facts which acey omits. firstly ligea dies of a preculioar malady; rowenna is brought to the point of death by the same disease. The speaker takes a lot of opium and so is worried he is hallucinating; he can't believe his senses- 'could a corpse cold, stiff, sedate, sob in the bed it lie?' but rowenas body metamorphiises into that of ligea before becoming reanimate.

Annihilator – Hunter Killer Lyrics 16 years ago
this sounds very much like a serial killer song; but is it?
the juxtapositioning of this and 'chicken and corn' suggests that it might acualy be about cicken killing. there is little in the lyic tht would suugest the contrary. but this does sound like a fanciful meaning. however it is notable tha the two songs are one track, joinged only by clucking

Genesis – Firth Of Fifth Lyrics 16 years ago
For some reason ive always assumed that the fifth mentioned in the title refers to a musical interval, the mmost essential musical interval 5 steps in a scale, or seven semitones.

i geuss combining this with the firth thing, the ditty is about a place where music meats the sea.

also on the musical note, the first and the fifth are two notes that put together make the basics for most chords. firth sounds alot like first; when i first read it i assumed it was a misprint

Opeth – Godhead's Lament Lyrics 16 years ago
i still love all the idea's that the speaker is a black slave, but who is the godhead that laments in this song; surely not the speakers 'decrepid' maker mentioned in 'the moor', the speaker claims to be a godhead,'Blank godhead, tear my name' he uses the words my name not 'its name' the speaker believes himself to be a god, eloihim or 'mighty one', maybe even some kind of messiah. other than the 'decrepid' maker the only ones claiming to be gods in the bible are deamons.

submissions
Opeth – The Moor Lyrics 16 years ago
the debate seems to 'is it about colour or religion';
i would rather opeth were speaking out about injustice in the world through the beutiful guise o complex poetry, but if you put this song in the context of the still life album, its cover or indead the rest of opeths works, it is clearly a mater of their hazy imaginations; ghosts, deamons and false religion.
he is 'outcast with dogmas forged below' which is intresting as the trinity is the only thing i've ever heard described as this was the trinity.
but clearly he is not a trinitarian living in a christian town, he hates his creator and he calls himself a godhead (also a wor rarely used out of conjunction with the trinity doctrine)

he is a satanist human at the very least, i think he is something like the angels that disobeyed god in the early chapters of genesis that came down to take human wives.

but as he is not real i think he is an amalgamation of these things.

i like the idea that he is 'the moor' though

however he also seems to be in his affection for melinda not unlike the 'nightmares' in the iron maiden song 'still life' in their attraction to the speaker.
for me the song 'still life' is parraleled almost perfectly in this album. first melinda is scared, then mesmerised, attracted and finaly kills herself. just like the speaker in the iron maiden song

also i find it pertinent that our 'moor' or fallen angel, or
satanist or beast repents and accepts god in the album final chapter

Roadrunner United – Dawn of a Golden Age Lyrics 16 years ago
firstly mr filth has the worst voice of ny metal frontman ever

secondly he realy wrote some great amb lyrics for this song, he seems to know quite a bit about the 'daniel' prophesies

this song is about the 'beast' prophecy, the beast was a rather gnarly character that represents the roman empire andd its successors, leading up to the anglo american world power

i'm realy impressed though that he seems to refferance the 'king of the north/ south prophesy' which is much harder to understand,

it follows two kings from little after alexander the great to our modern times, then 'the dawning of a golden age', but notably when understood corectly it does say quite alot about the 'caesers and tsars', though i might spell caeser kaiser.

the 'tree' prophecy also gives the precise year when the 'gentile times end', satan is cast down to earth
and jesus begis to rule in heaven

1914

but i seem to have digressed

top song though

Roadrunner United – Independent (Voice of the Voiceless) Lyrics 16 years ago
jeff walters (annihilator) plays the best damb solo on the album

also this song portrays metal as a religion, that defends the 'oppressed creature',

the 'voice of the voiceless' was a term karl marx used in his 'opium of the masses' speach, or at least i think it was in a speach.
its a very telling term- only a true marxist would use it as it is realitivly obscure. this is probably because the capitalist media only like to report things that marx said if they sound like he is criticizing goodd things.

realy what he was arguing is that religion was a good thing but that it had been warped by capitalist ideologies into an opiet that kept the prolateriate seddated.

when he described it as 'the voice of the voiceless, the heart of a heartless system, and the cry of the oppressed creature' he was listing its virtues but highlighting their pointlessness whilst it was controlled by the bourgeoise, and arguing that true happiness comes only from a just and fair society not the promise of a just and fair afterlife
