I thought that the "pale green things" was a way of equating scraggy grass growing in hostile conditions to him growing in similar difficulties. They may be pale green things, but they are tenacious, alive, and can derive some pride or satisfaction from the struggle. |

I, too, love this song. I loved the way it opened No Code. It seems to slide into existence instead of exploding like so much of their earlier stuff had. Yet, it has an intensity that easily matches everything else they've done. And it set the mood of that album perfectly. It was a real change for them and is remarkable. |

I haven't thought about the whole meaning, but I do love how the delayed delivery of "eye" in "peaceful as a hurricane....eye". The conflict between the violence of a hurricane with the peacefulness of its eye is beautifully done. It's a great use of music to express it. |
