The Clash – Know Your Rights Lyrics
|
This song just epitomizes Joe Strummer. What a fucking revolutionary, no one else could write a song about human rights like this. I love how he's just basically flipping the finger to the government with this. It's like he's thinking, we're supposed to be lucky to have all these so called 'rights', but all the shit we have to go through to get them, is it really worth it? |

Generation X – Kiss Me Deadly Lyrics
|
The snooker hall is empty
'Cause they're all out playing pool
Hustling down the Fulham Road
Doing deals with Mr. Cool
My all-time favourite song lyrics, those lines. They just seem to epitomize British youth culture. Standing around on the streets when you should be at school, doing deals you shouldn't be doing with the person you think is so cool, but then you grow up and realise he wasn't. It's basically about youth in Britain. |

Ocean Colour Scene – The Day We Caught The Train Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
One of my favourite OCS songs ever, but I especially love the line :
When you find that things are getting wild don't you want days like these?
Which makes me think they're about lazy days with your friends, doing what you want, probably summer days. Maybe of teenage years, when you'd spend the summer holidays doing fuck all important, just pissing about with your mates, and then you're stuck down by adulthood, things get wild, and you realise, after spending years complaining about school, they were the best days of your life. |

The Zutons – Valerie Lyrics
|
This song always reminds me of this guy I know, and he's always breaking up with girls and going out with new ones really quickly, but he's only ever been in love with one of them, and she was a bit... erm, quirky, like the valerie of this song, and she had ginger hair, dressed weirdly. Also, he always wonders about her, and goes down to the Mersey to think about her, which is where I presume Dave (the singer) goes when he refers to 'I look across the water'.
Just really similar situations methinks |

Green Day – Best Thing in Town Lyrics
|
I always thought it was about a girl who Billie liked because of her status - Like, she's the best thing in town, and he's prepared to "Sit around and watch you pout" because of her high status, and he knows he won't get any better than her around town. |

Dead Kennedys – I Kill Children Lyrics

Totally agree with ^^^. People are too fuckin sensitive these days. Y'know, racism and stuff, okay, it ain't nice, okay, prejudism ain't nice, but that doesn't mean if you're black, asian, disabled or a minority in any way, you have to kill someone if they make a joke in jest about it. This song is just total genius and Jello Biafra is one of the ultimate frontmen of all time. Songs like these MAKE the Dead Kennedys. |

Sandi Thom – I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I like this song, though, alike to 'oldgit' I appreciate that she uses a total paradox in the main line in the song, which is quite annoying. I heard it months before it came out, and the impressive vocals struck me. Another thing that struck me, upon taking a closer look at the lyrics, was the contrived attempt to make herself seem alternative and progressive, when really, she's just taken thoughts that are in the head of any person who thinks the world isn't in too great a state politically and turned them into a fairly straight-talking song.
Total mixed feelings, to be honest, jazzy, catchy tune and stunning voice with fairly well thought-out lyrics, but it's the try-hard tone of the song that makes it sound like a bad attempt at making music that says something, when really, she's just taken an idea and exploited it. |

Joni Mitchell – The Circle Game Lyrics
|
It's a really great song about the cycle of life, and being desperate to grow up to fulfill your dreams, only to grow up and lose the grandeur of the dreams that once drove you. It would be a great graduation song, actually, its just a song about time and how you feel you want it to quicken... Then it goes too fast and you need it to slow down. |

Joni Mitchell – Conversation Lyrics

The fifth line is actually "I bring him apples and cheeses"
This is clearly about wanting a man who only see's you as a friend, while you look on as his present woman mistreats him, and knowing that you could treat him so much better |

This song makes me cry. I always thought she was a teenager when she gave up her daughter, but she was in fact in her early twenties. I love the lyrics and its a very touching song |

Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now Lyrics
|
I think this is Joni's way of saying that in the past she was ignorant and thought she knew love, and she thought she knew everything. Then she looked at it from the other side and she realised she only had a skewed perception of love as a reality, rather than a concept. It is through this that she came to the realisation that she really doesn't know love at all.
The reference to "Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, that dizzy, dancing way you feel, as every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way." shows her young perception of love, and what she concieved it to be, till she grew up and "It's loves illusions I recall" shows that she doesn't think she has ever truly felt love, only illusions of it, and textbook definitions of the real thing.
It's an amazing, heartfelt song that provokes serious thought |

Joni Mitchell – Blue Lyrics
|
This is such a sad song, and I too interpreted the use of tattoo imagery to be a metaphor for her blues. It also shows that through her blues, she has a strength that stops her conforming like a tatoo, and how she doesn't become part of the scenery:
Everybody's saying that
Hell's the hippest way to go
Well, I don't think so, but I'll take a look around it, though
And the fact that she proclaims her love for Blue personalises it also, so her blues may be love-induced. Amazing song |

Love – A House Is Not a Motel Lyrics
|
By the time that I'm through singing
The bells from the schools of wars will be ringing
More confusions, blood transfusions
The news today will be the movies for tomorrow
these lines are amazing, as is the entire song. To me, it has no specific meaning, apart from how things are not always what they seem, how things aren't always quite as real as you expect. |

Ocean Colour Scene – She's Been Writing Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
My ultimate favourite OCS song.
To me, this is about a girl who everybody was unsure about; they had hopes for her, but they knew she'd go against the grain on everything, and wasn't afraid to be different. They think it's a shame but through all this, she's writing down all her experiences to tell the world about. She's learning from all her mistakes and she wants them all to know that. |

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Still Suspicion Holds You Tight Lyrics

I adore this song - It's about having everything going for you in your life, and you're happy, and you're perfect, but you hold yourself back with your incessant suspicion and paranoia that somethings working against you and all the good things will turn against you |

Muse – Time Is Running Out Lyrics
|
This song could be any of the three suggested - politics, drugs, or simply, love. I'd say it was most likely about being completely infatuated with someone you are in a relationship with, but they only like you a little. They know how you feel and they manipulate you, and the person feels that "Time is running out", before the relationship ends, and he knows she's only going to make the ending of it worse for him, but he wants a bit of happiness before the inevitable happens and she "Buries it", because although he's insisting that he won't let her, he can't stop himself giving into her. He asks himself how it came to this, after starting out okay. He knows he's fighting a losing battle |

John Lennon – Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) Lyrics

I've no idea baout the Paul V.S John theory, but the personal message to me in this song about people who are too up their own arses to appreciate the good things in life, and that everybody is your brother - there's no such thing as a super star, except for in your own mind, because we all shine on. |

The Pogues – Sally MacLennane Lyrics

I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this - Such a happy song in the way. It's about knowing a guy (Jimmy) who had the girl everybody wanted, but when he went away, (with intentions to return to her), and growing up to be like the guy in most ways, including the love of his former girl. |

The Pogues – Fairytale Of New York Lyrics

Merriest Christmas song in creation - To me, it's about how people always set out with the best intentions for Christmasses and the New Year, but it all comes to nothing - Years later the couple hate one another, and can do nothing but slag one another off. She hates him for taking away all she held dear, leaving her in the state where she's dying in a hospital bed on a drip, because everything she had has been wasted by him, who took away her dreams, and built his around her. |

Cheap Trick – Surrender Lyrics
|
To me, this song is a guy recounting the realisation that parents aren't just parents to the kind of girl he was warned about by his mother. It's about in general the boys relationship with his parents and the changes to it as he overcomes each and every realisation about their past and present.
I wasn't too sure about the "Surrender" part, and not knowing much about American History, if it was related to the Vietnamese/Korean war, I wouldn never have discovered the meaning on my own. I always thought it meant something along the lines of "Surrender to what you want (i.e the girl his mother warned him about), but don't give yourself totally because there's always the thought that you'll get hurt by 'girls like you'." Does this make sens eot anybody else? |

Tom McRae – End Of The World News Lyrics

Its about the pointlessness and futility of modern life and convenience, how we take it all for granted, and we won't be the one to pay the price, the planet will be. The world is ending slowly and he'd rather be dosed up to his eyeballs that see it all happen, and he doesn't want to be able to see the ground and see what's becoming of it and the world beneath his feet |

Really excellent song. It's got the typical girl down to a T, as well as the typical boy who's always late and she feels like she's getting messed around.
