White Rabbits – Midnight And I Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is beautiful in the way the percussion and guitar plays with the piano. There's a tangled beat, but also a lovely flow.

I think the song might be about sleepwalking, but I can't tell what it's "REALLY" about. Maybe anxiety or fear - a fear or anxiety of living in a reality that is more dreamlike. "I've been walking at night with my eyes shut." Perhaps it's this realization while facing age, illness, or drug addiction severe enough to cause tooth loss and weakness. Drugs would also match the notion that someone has been walking around 'with their eyes shut' and unaware of their waking world because the drugs have mentally and/or physically removed them from it.

I'm not certain with this answer, but I look forward to hearing what others thing.

(You know how they say "Movies are about one thing (Example: Nebraska Boy meets girl and they have a baby), but they're really about something else (sexual repression in midwestern society)? I feel the same way about songs).

I love the cagey industrial beat of the song. It's also very fun to dance to. I'd imagine you could do some pretty interesting film editing to the song as well.

Gotye – Heart's a Mess Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is very powerful. (I don't know if the subject is a male or female... who says it's about a hetero relationship - could be either way : ).

I can't believe Gotye - it's amazing work and I'm so sad they're not touring in the states. A song like this would never win awards over here.

Stripping literally - or selling one's self and sacrificing that self for a superficial attention probably because one does not know themselves well enough.

I wonder how 9/11 would change this song...

I'm 25, Cajun/Creole (actually ; ) and I remember occasionally hearing this song on the radion I listened to while attempting to fall asleep as a little girl during the stormy Nebraskan / Southern nights, and sometimes it would stream over the casinos and bars I went in growing up (some places actually allow you in the door under age). I never knew the name of the song but was reintroduced to the song while listening to the Al Franken show. He plays this song just before he starts the last 10 minutes of his show and I've been waiting for him to identify the song for weeks now. Today he finally did!

London Town - Do they mean Maryland here or is there another London Town in the south?

Modest Mouse – Bukowski Lyrics 18 years ago
Here we go
If God controls the land and disease
Keeps a watchful eye on me
If he's really so damn mighty
My problem is that I can't see
Well who'd wanna be? Who'd wanna be such a control freak?
Well who'd wanna be? Who would wanna be such a control freak?

I first really listened to the lyrics of this song the close of two major relationships in the shadow of Hurricane Katrina. One of these relationships was with a faithful wealthy and well educated Christian who could not understand why I was so upset about the levees. He kept asking me "why does it bother you so much?" That question didn't make sense to me - how could this not bother me? And how could a person who nearly became a priest even ask this question, and remain so indifferent to my compassion for humanity and history?

For me the song reflected what I was feeling at the time - if there is God - why the mess? If God has faithful followers (like this person I knew and like the religious right who are in charge right now), why are they so indifferent when they can and have the resources etc to prevent or help these situations?

On a seperate (or possibly related) note, I wrote a paper on Bukowski's "Tragedy of the Leaves." The poem is a gritty reflection of life, our fight for perfection, its pain and how it often destroys us in the end. I'm not sure this is supposed to be a bad thing however... I don't know. Regardless, I think the song reflects Bukowski's poems.

Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics 18 years ago
College -

Having just graduated after a half regretful experience in a college I loved but didn't value for what I needed from it, I guess this passage about college caught my attention. Simply put - college is (or should be) about learning for the sake of learning and in a philosophical sence - learning about something in order to learn about yourself (and about memorizing fancy words, learning a 'career' or learning how to be an 'actor' in society).

I think the song is about learning about one's true self, and not about what one can aquire. I think this is why there's reference to spirituality - spirituality, like college, is (or should be) about learning about one's own self.

And love? I don't think someone can truly love another person until they know themselves and love themselves to some degree.

Can this song be about drugs as well? I think it can. Drugs, like anything material, can drive people to lose a sense of who they are, or distort their own self image.
