Norah Jones – Thinking About You Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe this is about a woman whose lover is going off to war. It's "time for [her] to let [him] go" as he prepares to "sail across the ocean waters" to the battlefield. She wonders if he really loves her because he's choosing an occupation that will take him far away from her. She wants to know if he will think about her while she is overseas. Even if he doesn't, she will cherish his memory in her heart. This has to be one of the saddest Norah songs I have ever heard.

This is interesting. Thanks for sharing! I will have to read that book.

Jamie O' Neal – Shiver Lyrics 11 years ago
OK, so most of the time I can't stand country music, but I just love this song and its lyrics. It perfectly describes how my husband can still make me feel after six years.

Train – 50 Ways to Say Goodbye Lyrics 11 years ago
"is it just me or does he take the rhythm right out of the Phantom of the Operah theme song?"

No, you're definitely not. That's the first thing I thought of when I heard this song, and thought I was going crazy!

Can't believe no one has commented on this amazing song! I can't listen to this without singing along.

DJ Encore – I see right through to you Lyrics 12 years ago
OK, she knows that he's in love with her even though she won't admit it. Loved this song when it came out. It described the situation with me and my then-boyfriend right before we started dating. I could sense his interest in me, like an aura. We're no longer together, but that excitement, the uncertainty of knowing, never really went away.

Yngwie Malmsteen – Heaven Tonight Lyrics 12 years ago
Can't believe no one has commented on this amazing song. That last chorus is so powerful. Definitely one of the best hair metal songs ever.

Shontelle – Impossible Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about a guy who cheated on his girlfriend, but she never saw it coming, and now she's heartbroken/humiliated. She's asking him to tell her side of the story, and be honest about the fact that he cheated instead of blaming her (i.e. "tell them I was happy"). I wish this song had come out a few years ago, because it mirrors the situation I was in with my boyfriend at the time. He cheated on me, and I was completely blindsided by it. I thought we were happy, but apparently he didn't feel the same. *Sigh*. At the very least I am grateful to Shontelle for putting the heartbreak into words.

Dan Hartman – I Can Dream About You Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree. I love it when his voice gets husky during that part of the song, as if he has strong feelings that he's trying to hold back.

Maroon 5 – Not Coming Home Lyrics 12 years ago
Love this song. I think it can apply to any problematic relationship, not just a romantic one.

submissions
Sick Puppies – That Time of Year Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm thinking it's a New Year's Day song. The person that the speaker is addressing has just gotten home from a New Year's Eve party (hence the reason why she needs to go to bed in the morning). The idea of setting and meeting goals also fits in with a New Year's resolution. Great song.

Blondie – Shayla Lyrics 13 years ago
Me, too. I always thought she committed suicide. She left her job because she planned to kill herself, but she went on one last trip down the freeway. I thought the "lost in space and down she came" part was her jumping off a bridge, and passerbys wondered who this lovely, anonymous dead girl was.

A more optimistic interpretation is that "lost in space" refers to Shayla daydreaming and the "cosmic energy" is God or some source of inspiration that encourages her not to end her life after all. I would like to believe that this is what really happened to her.

Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed Lyrics 13 years ago
Great comment, esp. your last paragraph. I agree that it's a first love, because when it's a first love, you thrill at the slightest touch from the other person. You can go on to love others, but nothing is as exciting as that first time.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your Heart Is an Empty Room Lyrics 13 years ago
This is pretty self-explanatory. It's about a guy who thought he was in love with a girl, but really he was just enjoying the thrill of the chase. So now that he has her, he's bored in the relationship. The relationship is so lifeless that he might as well be single (which is why he sees "so many possibilities to not be alone). Every time a girl passes him by on the street, he imagines what his life would be like if he was with her instead (even for a casual sexual encounter). When the relationship finally ends, he realizes he wasn't attached to his girlfriend after all, so he "shed[s] not a single tear".

I love this song. It's an emotionally wrenching portrayal of a boring, unfulfilling relationship, one that will deeply resonate if you've ever been in this guy's position.

Fleet Foxes – Battery Kinzie Lyrics 13 years ago
This is my favorite FF song. I have loved it since Robin performed an early version at one of his concerts. I only have two questions. First, what does the title mean (originally the title was Lorelai)? Also, what does "He paid the wage you sent to me" mean?

Dan Auerbach – I Want Some More Lyrics 13 years ago
This has a seductive groove. Although the vocals are a little hard to understand. At first I thought the lyrics were, "I'm just a kid and you're a careless wh-re."

This song perfectly describes how I felt about my ex. It's as if Don read my mind. He has the most amazing voice in metal.

Foreigner – Cold As Ice Lyrics 13 years ago
K-leb hit the nail on the head. Perhaps this woman was deeply hurt, and so she's trying to protect herself from further pain ("closing the door/you leave the world behind"), but in the process, she rejects those who could love her. "Digging for gold" means that she wraps herself in dreams of personal success that take the place of relationships in her life.

She & Him – I Thought I Saw Your Face Today Lyrics 13 years ago
Brilliant interpretation! I was in that exact situation years ago, and even after all this time, I still get choked up whenever I see a guy who reminds me of him. I don't know if he even remembesr me, but I will always remember him. Like the singer, I still enjoyed the time we had together, however brief.

fun. – All the Pretty Girls Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about, in a word, denial. At first, he doesn't want to admit that his relationship is over. When it is, he tries to pretend that he's enjoying his newfound freedom to get out there and score with some new chicks but, surprise surprise, he just can't close the deal. I think it's funny how he has this Seinfeld-esque way of dismissing each new girl for very petty reasons, i.e. "your hair is too long". In the end, he concludes that he is tired of playing the dating game and trying to find someone new, so he'd rather revert to the comfort of his old relationship ("don't make me face my generation alone").

CeeLo Green – Fuck You Lyrics 13 years ago
When I first heard of this song, I didn't think I'd like like it, because let's face it, the title isn't very creative. Anyone can say, "F-- you!" But I love Cee-Lo's ironic delivery; he says it with a cheerful tone and some chirpy '60's style back up singers. I always crack up when he says, "I really hate yo ass right now."

Aloe Blacc – I Need a Dollar Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is surprisingly catchy, and true to life. It should be the theme song for the US economy, and for my life. Unfortunately, $1 doesn't even begin to cover what I need...

She & Him – I Put a Spell on You (Screamin' Jay Hawkins cover) Lyrics 13 years ago
The meaning is pretty self-explanatory, although I'm thinking that the singer's "spell" isn't very effective if the guy is still running around on her. She is engaging in deluded, wishful thinking.

At first, I wasn't that crazy about this version, but it has grown on me. I still think CCR's version is the best one, though.

Death Cab for Cutie – Cath... Lyrics 13 years ago
There are many reasons, boing-boing. A person might feel that there's no one else out there for her, or maybe the man she truly loves isn't available, so she accepts what she can get.

Beautiful one
I wanna go where you are.

George Ducas – Every Time She Passes By Lyrics 13 years ago
I am sad, but not surprised, that no one has commented on this golden oldie from the 90's. I remember hearing this in heavy rotation on the radio when I was a child. As an adult, I can relate to this song. It reminds me of my crush, but unlike the singer, I'm not brave enough to ask them out and try for a happy ending.

M. Ward – Here Comes The Sun Again Lyrics 13 years ago
I like how he sings to the sun as though it's a beautiful woman. The lyrics are very sensual (i.e. "slides inside sandy river").

Ben Folds – Time Lyrics 13 years ago
In lieu of the typical, vengeful breakup song, Ben offers one in which the boyfriend empathizes with his ex's grieving process. He knows that she will re-write the narrative of their relationship to recast him as the bad guy, which will in turn make it easier for her to let him go. He knows she'll forget about him eventually, but he's still hurting from the breakup, too. A lot of people can relate to this subject matter.

As an aside, Weird Al delivers great backing vocals! Maybe this song will give him the appreciation he deserves for being an amazing vocalist!

Pixies – Here Comes Your Man Lyrics 13 years ago
If you are, then so am I, because I thought the same thing! Somehow, the box car reference made me think that the girl literally lived on the wrong side of the tracks and was waiting for her boyfriend from the upscale part of town to come pick her up. And all her family was standing around jeering, "Here comes your man" because they thought that she believed herself to be to good for them now that she was dating a rich boy. Apparently I just created a whole narrative that wasn't really part of the song!

Kenny Rogers – We've Got Tonight Lyrics 13 years ago
I always thought this song was about a long distance relationship. He's interested in making things work out despite the distance, but she is not. So he decides to make the best of the time he has with her.

submissions
Norman Greenbaum – Spirit In The Sky Lyrics 13 years ago
Me, too. It always confuses my friends when they hear me listening to this, because they know I'm not religious. But if you listen closely to the lyrics, they provide a gentle satire of religion. Conservative Christianity has cheapened itself with its own attempt at marketing, i.e. "I've got a friend in Jesus". "Set me up with the spirit in the sky" points to the idea that people hope to bribe their way into heaven (perhaps with good behavior). Greenbaum rejects all that ("I'm not a sinner, I never sinned").

submissions
Best Coast – Our Deal Lyrics 13 years ago
The meaning is fairly self-explanatory. The singer is in love with her FWB, but she knows that he doesn't want to go further because it's not their "deal", or the way their relationship works. They'v established a pattern as FWB and he doesn't want more.

Fleetwood Mac – Monday Morning Lyrics 13 years ago
I thought it was about the inverse (a girl waiting for a guy). The lead singer sounds feminine (is it Lindsey?).

She & Him – I Can Hear Music Lyrics 13 years ago
Great song! I actually like it better than the original. The Beach Boys' version is a little too upbeat and doesn't match the tone of the lyrics. S & H nails it.

She & Him – I Knew It Would Happen This Way Lyrics 13 years ago
This one is pretty self-explanatory. The girl feels that she isn't living up to her full potential, in life and in love, and she has decided she isn't going to wait around for the guy to commit to her. It's a great song. I can't believe no one has commented on it.

Minor correction: it's "I'm always the ship in the stream."

Gwyneth Paltrow – Cruisin' Lyrics 14 years ago
No, you're not (though I wish more people would comment). These two are musical soulmates. I almost wish that they'd perform together again--or that Gwyn would sing solo--but then any future releases probably won't measure up. This is perfection.
