To me this song is about how television is numbing our minds. Everything points back to staying inside and scheduling your life around TV. "So this is continuous happiness You know, I always Imagined it something more With the right drapes, the right paints The right frames, this could really work What a great day to spend indoors" The first three lines sound as if he doesn't understand why people can do nothing in their lives but watch TV, because it should be "something more." When your house is set up around your TV as the center of attention you can just get sucked into it. "Wake, wake up, wake, wake up...." He's just telling people to realize this isn't the best way to live. "In a hail of sparks And a tangle of wires Everything went wrong" Goes back to the TV idea, seeing as a television as all kinds of electric things going on inside. It's showing that TV is the source of the problem. "So where has all the day gone? And why are my lungs aching when I breathe? Is there something wrong with the heat? Why am I so cold? And my heart feels sick And it hurts when I speak And this is not what I hoped for" Line 1 shows how time flies and is wasted watching TV, and the ailments of speaking, and his heart show the laziness that accompanies you when your life revolves around TV. He regrets that it isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be. "Was this what we hoped for?" Asking if this is how we wanted to see ourselves as adults. Instead of having social lives, having fun, contributing to society, we just waste away, spending time on the TV. This is all just my opinion.
