Yo La Tengo – Drug Test Lyrics 11 years ago
I think "Wake of the Flood" is correct -- it's both an album and a song by the Dead.

The Lucksmiths – Great Lengths Lyrics 13 years ago
A delightful pop gem about the virtues of persistance and self-awareness from a woefully underappreciated band. Also perhaps the best and most seamless mention of a Volvo in pop history...

The New Pornographers – Chump Change Lyrics 13 years ago
A great song, indeed -- as would be any song that manages to refer to two towering achievements of 20th century art and thought (Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase AND Wittgenstein's Tractatus ("The world is that which is the case)) while just plain kicking ass. Does pop music get any better than this?

Elvis Costello – New Lace Sleeves Lyrics 13 years ago
One of my favorite Elvis songs, replete with typical EC double entendre:
he wants to be one of the socialite sisters / he wants to be one of their problems; the 'white lies' the teacher tells are benevolent fibs / the 'white lies' are the lies that dominate history books written by white folks.

Talking Heads – Wild Wild Life Lyrics 13 years ago
DB seems to like the financial services metaphors: in addition to this song's "Check out Mr. Businessman", there's "Stockbroker make a bad investment when love has come to town" from (what else?) "Love Has Come to Town."
