Strung Out – A War Called Home Lyrics 13 years ago
Some of these lyrics are wrong. Second stanza should go:

I was a son of the promised land
Whose father's youth was lost in Vietnam
One nation believed all the TV said
Killed Kennedy and screamed
"God is dead!"

Probably my favorite lines in the song, too.

Strung Out – Orchid Lyrics 14 years ago
Whoa, these lyrics are messed up in some crucial places. Here's how it should go:

I am the future
I am metaphor for war
I take my medicine as I'm praying on all fours
We sit in fields of rust, Corinthian and time
I'm synthesis in motion
I am freedom and decline

Raise me to shine like an orchid from the cracks
Wash me aside when my levees finally break
In opposition we are never free
When our cause becomes our slavery

The poet and the warrior
The future or the way we were
Stand and rise up, we all know
The secret to the life we chose
So we are

I am law to save me from from who I am
I am love spent then reborn again
We are orchid torn away
All is forgiven when we pay

The poet and the warrior
The future or the way we were
Stand down rise up, we all know
The secret to the life you chose
Stand down rise up, we all know
Stand down rise up, we all know

suicidal tendencies? senses fail makes it sound more like HOMOSEXUAL tendencies huh huh huh

(That was sarcasm)

But seriously, their cover isn't that great. Buddy's voice works on the choruses, but he completely ruins the verses.

A Wilhelm Scream – Our Ghosts Lyrics 14 years ago
I think you've got the right idea MZA, but I'm with Andiamo, what if "the arrows that poisoned your heart" are all things that lead someone to commit suicide? Perhaps it is about someone who OD'd. It'd make sense why he refuses to pass judgement.

But the second half of the lyrics (starting "the meaning-well, misguided talking shit committee gathers") talk about a different person, one who is metaphorically dead. The lines "Guilt pays off in full | Pay your maker" sound like the narrator is talking to a Christian adhering to the idea that they are guilty of sin and must repent by giving up their life to God. The next few lines are the writer's self-explanatory answer: "I'll be opposed to every argument, be ill with every lie | I'm not looking to be a hero, I'm not looking for a fight."

To cut to the point, the song is comparing two forms of suicide: the physical kind described in the first verse, and the mental suicide described in the second.

Bad Religion – Sorrow Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with SwedishFish and proman. Atheism is not substituting conception of good and evil for a "rearrangement of protons, neutrons, and electrons." All people have morals, whether they take them from the Bible, logic, their own experiences, or some combination thereof. The way I see it, accusing someone of having no morals is the worst insult you can impute to said person; being a bit of an atheist myself, and having good atheist friends, I'm deeply offended by your assumption that we don't consider war, genocide, and rape to be acts of evil.

Going by your logic, no_anesthetic, atheists must perceive suffering as an arbitrary side effect of molecular arrangement, since they have no deity to discern for them what is right and what is wrong. You now have three people (proman, SwedishFish, and I) who contradict this syllogism: I suggest you reconsider your previous assumptions about atheists.

Rise Against – Faint Resemblance Lyrics 15 years ago
I think nyghtcrawler's on the right path; the song is about post-relationship problems. The two people have split up now, but the feelings they had for each other are still kind of lingering inside of them. Thus, the two feel emotions about each other that are familiar, but at the same time are unusual, which I gather from the lines "Have we been here before? Will we be here again?"

Thrice – Come All You Weary Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks that Dustin's allusions to the Bible make him a talented writer because he's NOT doing it to spread Christianity, per se? If that were the case, 90% of Thrice's music would be simple psalms of worship, and the band's discography might as well be made into a Hymnal. Not that I'm saying you CAN'T gather a Christian under- (or over-) tone from Dustin's lyrics, but that's not thinking too deeply if you ask me. You're not getting a true message from a song if every time you see a Biblical allusion in the lyrics and you immediately think it says "Worship God and Jesus!" You should instead ask yourself (or others), "What message was the writer trying to convey by making this allusion? Was he/she intending to make a deeper meaning more comprehendable?" Granted, I know there are times when an allusion to the Bible would be intended to promote Christianity. However that doesn't mean that there is nothing else to be found when you search deeper into a song's meaning, and I'm speaking to people like KarateBob just as much as I am to ignoramuses like Ouspensky.

It's cool Sabio; I don't really mind how late your reply was. I'll try and help clarify what I said earlier, but first things first: Holeakrap, there's something about you're insults thats preventing me form taking any offense. Maybe it's you're delivery, or maybe it's you're choice of words. Perhaps it's just me. I don't know.

Back to you, Sabio. Well, my impression was that the song was meant to point out the kinds of Christians out there who do all the good deeds that the Bible tellls them to do just to save themselves from going to Hell, when they should be giving to the poor and moving metaphorical mountains out of a love for doing good.

I do realize that the lyrics aren't specific enough for me to justify my argument and shoot yours down at the same time (and vice versa), though. Perhaps Dustin intended for this to be intepreted more like you have, and I'm just gathering conclusions that aren't there. Then again, the lyrics are just vague enough for one to argue for the opposite side. But who knows? Maybe even Dustin writes his songs open in order to inspire listeners like you and I to have these kinds of open-minded discussions?

Thrice – Child of Dust Lyrics 16 years ago
This might be my favorite sonnet out of the four, but it's too hard to decide. This song could easily be made to say that it's about how God kicked man out of the Garden of Eden, but I think the meaning is more significant than that. Actually I think that by alluding to the story of how Adam and Eve were thrown out of Eden, Dustin is saying that the earth itself is paradise, perfect for mankind to live in; Earth IS Eden, so to speak. Yet, despite this, we still have destroyed much of the earth's beauty, as "uprooted flowers and filled the holes with blood". The last six lines imply that although we've ravaged the earth above us, we all will eventually return to her (mother earth's) soft embrace, where "no prying spades" will find us. The couplet tells us that we will know what it means to truly sleep once we die, and leave all the toils of the world behind us.

Thrice – Broken Lungs Lyrics 16 years ago
In the song, Dustin asks of us, "Are we fools and cowards all?" Apparently, most of us are if you have the ignorance to write this song off as conspiracy theorist bull crap. To look at the meaning of this song and immediately call Dustin and Thrice a bunch of conspiracy theorists is the really outrageous thing here. mattjones, mgj, and mopar68, you, and to those who instantly lost respect for Thrice after this song: you have all committed a gross act of hypocrisy. If a conspiracy theorist is someone whose mindset is to point fingers at a group of people and yell, "Guilty!", then know that you all have the same trait of narrow mindedness; you are all doing exactly what you have accused Thrice and Dustin Kensrue of doing. Think about that before you call us cowardly, pathetic, scum.

Thrice – Moving Mountains Lyrics 16 years ago
Sabio, your interpretation isn't half bad, nor are most of the other's that believe the song is about empty Christianity, but I think it's a bit more blunt than the way you've put it, honestly.

The song is about how Christian believers will take the word of the Bible too seriously, to the point where they've given up so much of their lives in the name of God and Jesus Christ. I'm sure most all of us can agree with that. However, on the line "I don't know the first thing about love", your interpretation is that human love is nothing compared to the vastness of God's love. I have to disagree on that.

Rather, I think he's saying that extreme devotion to faith in God is not actually love. It makes me want to ask, "So you've never denied God's name, you can move mountains, and you've even given all you own to the poor, but have you actually done this out of love for the poor, or fear of your own God?"

Catch 22 – Dear Sergio Lyrics 16 years ago

Thrice – A Subtle Dagger Lyrics 16 years ago
Did anyone else notice how the title of the song seems to be an allusion to The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman? The book is part of the His Dark Materials series, which has gained quite a considerable amount of infamy of late. My girlfriend was reading The Subtle Knife last week, and when I saw the title, this song was the first thing I thought about. I suppose if the book does have as many atheist undertones as all the critics have oh-so frivolously pointed out, then that might tie into how the song seems to be about questioning religion. I don't really know, as I have yet to read the book The Subtle Knife, or any of Philip Pullman's other works, for that matter. I just thought I'd bring up that point, in case anyone's interested.

The Offspring – Neocon Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, about what I think the song means:
Really, I think it was meant to be a different interpretation for each listener. Maybe there was some specific meaning in the band members' heads. Either way, I think it's more of an anti-neocon anthem, but that's just my judgement based on the title. I don't really know.

The Offspring – Neocon Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, Z1z, in the 1800s, it was the Republican party that advocated ending slavery, but that was nearly 150 years ago; the purpose of the name "Neo-Conservative" is to refer to the newer, modern day conservatives and Republicans, not necessarily Abe Lincoln, or any of the pro-abolition politicians from the 1860s.

Thrice – Firebreather Lyrics 16 years ago
Amazing song. I think the song talks about how there's lots of violence and suffering in the world, but most people don't even care; they fold their hands and hold their tongues, so to speak. The only true way to become free of such pain is to breathe in fire, which means to become aware and be active in the world.

Though I don't quite see how you're getting pop-punk out of some guys commenting on a Pennywise song, I do get what you're trying to say, ATDILoser. There really is this stupid "punk" image going around that's starting to annoy the piss out of me. I've seen people go and buy some key chain that says PUNK in pink and black letters at a gas station, and there's even a girl I've seen carrying a black messenger bag with Tinker Bell on it, sporting the words "PuNK PiXiE." Yeah, this song is pretty unoriginal, but I don't think the riff sounds that much like the riff from Fat Lip. Maybe if Brown was still in the band, we'd hear a better song, but oh well. I still like this song, though. It's good to hear a throwback to some classic Sum 41. It's about being rebellious and youthful. And is the line about the "greater men who rise against" be a reference to the band Rise Against?

Man, I'm starting to get sick of hearing people say "that's not what the song is about" to people who have credible beliefs in their opinions. If the song gets one message to you, don't write off others as "wrong," especially when a band has lyrics as great as Thrice does. Personally, i would agree with Tyler0903 as to how i interpret the song. Not that i can't see the suicide references in the song. Actually, maybe he's meaning suicide metaphorically, like I'm going to kill my free will and thought just because its so much easier to be like everyone else. Who knows? I just want to say that I'm sick of seeing people's opinions being called "wrong." If you see any posts of mine where I say that an opinion is wrong, I probably didn't have the insight I do now. Hey feelinfunky, i think that if you can't feel great about life without drugs, then you have been brainwashed. You're mind has conformed into thinking that you won't get by on your own, so you must spend time and money on cocaine and other things. You don't even realize how much of a slave you are to drugs. Wow. This song is really good. I can't believe I used to listen to it and have no idea what they were singing about. Now, I can see it clearly. I like sake bottle swing's interpretation of the "plastic bag on a monument." I totally agree with BuckWilder. People do overreact just because you offer a differing opinion, which most often gets you judged and labeled a pessimist. Apparently, the United States are perfect and happy and the image of prosperous living, so pointing out that there are starving families and fathers fighting over a Anna Nicole Smith's million-dollar baby is wrong.

The Clash – Death or Glory Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is great and i agree with him ^^^ the Social D. cover is really good. I think the first verse talks about a guy who couldn't get by so well, so he joins a gang. He's loyal to the gang, but when he dies, it turns out to be another story of death and glory. The second verse is pretty clear; its the story of a guy who uses music just to get famous, no matter how much he tells us he won't. I find it pretty cool how that applies to many bands today. This is, yet another story of death or glory. The last verse, the one that chinup posted, seems to talk about a soldier's tale of, get this, death and glory! That's my take on this song. Yeah, maybe I did go too literal, but oh well.

This song is great. Personally, I don't consider myself straight edge. Don't get the wrong idea, I never have and don't plan on smoking or drinking anything or taking any other form of drug (aside from caffeine in sodas), but I support the idea of marijuana being legal. I feel like I'd be contradicting myself if I wore Xs one day and a "Legalize Marijuana" shirt the next day. Geez, I hate alchohol and alchohol companies, though. I can see the Bush references, but maybe the song is about fat mike's overall opinon of the death penalty. The way he sings "I was found to be...a minor threat except for that one man I killed," makes it sound like he finds it ridiculous that a normal, non-violent guy can be given capital punishment for one murder. The closing stanza about how killing the one man was planned by someone else backs up the idea that America's criminal system is broken.

wtf? I could've sworn i posted a comment that was on the first page...? Well, anyway, I'm not as much a fallout boy as I used to be, but this song isn't half as bad as some people are making it out to be. I just want people to stop complaining that Fallout Boy has gone pop, because, if it hasn't hit you, Fallout Boy is a pop/punk band (why does using 'fallout boy' and 'punk' in the same sentence leave a bad taste in my mouth?), so they have the right to make poppy songs. It ticks me off that lots of people are gonna listen to this song for the sake of it's cathiness, but at the same time, i think the lyrics are making fun of all those people, so there's a little bit of redemption there.

This song rocks. To me it talks about society's lies and how people are told that "they're not pretty enough" and the unquestioned answer is to do all sorts of shit to yourself like get plastic surgery and wear 200$ worth of makeup, or hang out with 'gangstas' becuase you won't be cool if you don't. And zedd128, I can kind of see where you're getting, how peole are told by preachers and stuff that the Bible's events are true, so they listen blindly, but nobody can really prove that the evnets didn't happen, just like every other religion. I could go deeper into this topic, but that'd take a long time.
