The last word is "electroencephalograph"

The Mountain Goats – Waving at You Lyrics 15 years ago
Ridiculously heartbreaking. No wonder he gets into the story.

The Mountain Goats – Family Happiness Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm about 95% sure, in light of the song title, that the line "Started quoting Tolstoy into the machine" refers to the first line of Anna Karenina, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought it was "swaddled."

The Mountain Goats – The Young Thousands Lyrics 16 years ago
"The things that you've got coming will do things that you're afraid to / There is someone waiting out there with a mouthful of surprises." God damn is that an ominous and terrifying line.

Devendra Banhart – Canela Lyrics 17 years ago
I've got another verse to add:

Don't the mp3 in my iMac sound good
Well it sure sounds good to me
Or at least it would sound good if the album were about a half hour shorter
I mean come on Devendra, you're hot shit but 75 minutes is an awful long time

Devendra Banhart – Tit Smoking in the Temple of Artesan Mimicry Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about how Devendra Banhart is good at playing the guitar. Oh, and about smoking a tit in the temple of artesian mimicry.

The Decemberists – Clementine Lyrics 17 years ago
That line that everyone's discussing is especially effective considering the obvious impermanence of Clementine's first home.

The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #2 Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is bumpin'. It's fun and catchy and totally not about the God damned JFK assassination so just leave it alone please. Fuck the haters.

Swan Lake – All Fires Lyrics 17 years ago
Krug pulls a Destroyer in stealing from himself and re-using the line "all fires have to burn alive to live," almost verbatim; it originally appeared in "They Took a Vote and Said No" on "Shut Up I Am Dreaming." And he slyly precedes it with "I've said it before and I'll say it again," so clearly he knows what he's up to. I wonder if his working with Dan Bejar has anything to do with these shenanigans. ;)

Joanna Newsom – Monkey & Bear Lyrics 17 years ago
fjording: as Annelise pointed out, the name of the site is "song meanings." If you're just coming here to say OMG I LIEK THIS SONG, I think you might be missing the point. Annelise, I thought that was splendid. Now do the last three songs! ;)

Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics 17 years ago
That's okay, she's not an astrophysicist. It wouldn't surprise me if it were intentional, following as it does the line "I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember." Sometimes we forget even if we promise not to.

Barenaked Ladies – Psycho Killer (Talking Heads cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
The correct French is actually "Qu'est-ce que c'est."

Sufjan Stevens – Jacksonville Lyrics 18 years ago
Doc_42, you're right that Sufjan is no poet, but good lyrics are not synonymous with good poetry. I believe Sufjan's goal with Illinois was to paint a picture of a state rather than to create "meaningful" lyrics, whatever that means.

Quit trolling.

The Fiery Furnaces – Straight Street Lyrics 18 years ago
Only the Fiery Furnaces could write a song about an Ericsson cell-phone salesman getting fired in Mesopotamia and have it be this wicked.
