Radiohead – Lotus Flower Lyrics
|
My interpretation of this song is a bit different. I think that the narrator is addicted to a self destructive behavior ("Just to feed your fast ballooning head") and he is making the decision to let go of it and simply cease holding onto it. "The darkness ends with me (could be beneath, I hear ends with me)" implies he is the cause of his own sadness and of course the "chorus" ("And now I set you free") is suggesting he has made peace with his behavior.
From wikipedia: In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech, and mind as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. Of course you have to keep in mind that Thom Yorke's lyrics are never really telling stories or carrying metaphors so much as to create emotional effect for the listener. |

Ween – If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All) Lyrics

This song is brilliantly executed. I agree with izze90, but I also think it's about a sort of empty individual who needs something in his life. So s/he just starts hammering away at something meaningless "working myself to the bone" and gives him or herself the belief that there's some levity to what they're doing, even if it's absolutely meaningless. Just to believe in it. |

Broadcast – America's Boy Lyrics

Sommy is right, this song is not anti-american in the least. Pigheaded kids just want to draw the must dull and simple conclusion that america = satan or some bull. If anything it sounds like USA/Foreign relations, ala 'you are dean and me the queen'. Albeit most Broadcast lyrics are more like wallpaper to make the song more beautiful and give it aesthetic depth. |

Joanna Newsom – Cosmia Lyrics

Ys is one of the best records I have ever heard.
This song is about looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, and then suddenly not.
"Dried rose petals, red brown circles,
frame your eyes and stain your knuckles"
rose-colored glasses
"Help me Cosmia I'm grieving"
Think of it as "Cos I am grieving". Pretty clever there. |

Nirvana – Something in the Way Lyrics

The fish line is sarcasm. I read online that in Kurt's journals he was a vegetarian because of his stomache problems.
He's reasoning..."Maybe it's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feelings" as many people will argue. Or maybe a family member or something said this or something similar.
And what's so painful about this song is that the fish line is just thrown in there...he's viewing himself as a pisces and the idea that he's like the fish, just a bottom feeder. But of course, you have to feel sympathy for a fish, as ugly as they can look, they gasp for air and flop around...I believe that when Kurt was living underneath the bridge he felt he was truly neglected and thus reasoned that perhaps everyone and everything has feelings in some form. |

Nine Inch Nails – The Line Begins to Blur Lyrics

I wish you guys knew what you were talking about. Trent doesn't write political songs, and he never has. Trent writes personal songs about the deformation of an individual...jesus christ...
This song is about a person who has two sides to him or herself. That is, a yin and yang, or a good and evil side. The "line begins to blur" means that he's listened too much to either side, and now he cannot tell which is which.
This connects to "Beside you in time" in that he realizes that his mind was a cage he built himself to reason good and evil.
Got it? Okay. Awesome song. Move on. |

Belle & Sebastian – Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
It's about a person who naively does his best whenever he can. He's innocent and he means well, and he's dying because of it.
He knows he doesn't stand a chance, but he still tries, because if there's any genuine sentiment left in the world, the underdog will somehow succeed in the end.
Everyone roots for the underdog in the movies and books. Not so much in real life, sadly. |

Modest Mouse – Lives Lyrics

It's really two songs in one- from the beginning to end. I never realized how pretty this song was until now.
The song seems to be about setting yourself up for a letdown- wanting to be disappointed so you can hope for the better later on. I think everything in this song has been written by other artists before- but Modest Mouse really spells it out so that it hits you completely and totally. I feel very safe listening to this song. |

Tool – The Patient Lyrics

|
I really think it's just about a person ready to give up on life.
When you hear the title "The Patient" you don't think of patience, you think of a person in a hospital room about to undergo surgery.
The patient is about being a patient in life, waiting things out until your diagnosis comes, and hoping it will all be for the best. |

Goddamn. Radiohead is one of my favorite bands and..
Goddamn. I always hear people talking about how incredible Motion Picture Soundtrack and Street Spirit are, but neither of them have affected me as much as this one. I dunno why, something very dark but very beautiful about it- and I'm only listening to the acoustic live version.
The end where he goes "Toooooo much...toooooooooo bright...too powerful...makes me feel like staring into the sun. Goddamn. |

Radiohead – Lucky Lyrics

This is one of, if not my favorite song of all time. All of OK Computer is about unlikely heroics- sprouting wings and overtaking authority- "in an interstellar burst I'm back to save the universe".
This song is about an underdog standing up in a time of need and showing his true colors- "The head of state has called for me by name, but I don't have time for him"- this line was always the most powerful to me- imagine the president directly demands your help and calls you out- but you're occupied with something else- maybe busy saving "Sarah" while the world goes up in flames.
What brings me nearly to tears is the "It's gonna be a glorious day- I feel my luck could change-" It's as if he knows that things have been terrible- and yet, for no apparent reason, no needed reason, this day will simply be beautiful. It's too simple not to be.
And when he shouts "''Cause I'm your superhero, we are standing on the edge" That last time before it slows down and the heavy solo kicks in, I feel like my chest is going to explode. There's something so damn mystical about this song- all the songs on OK Computer remind me of colors- Airbag is White, Paranoid Android is yellow and Subterranian is Green- This one is bright, burning, explosive, electric sky blue. It makes me feel like I'm falling "from a great height"- that is, diving from a mountaintop- engaging in a feeling so beautifully abysmal that it melts the outside world. I'm overdramatic but I just love this song so much. |

The White Stripes – It's True That We Love One Another (feat. Holly Golighty) Lyrics
| 18 years ago

"Elephant" is supposed to be about "The Death of the Sweetheart"... I think that has to do with all the obscure sexual references hidden in the seemingly innocent songs.
"I just don't know what do with myself" could be about jerking off-
"Black Math" could be about the occult
And "Ball and Biscuit" is obviously about sex--
so this could be about a three way. who knows. |

Radiohead – Sulk Lyrics

I think he's saying "believe", not behave in the third verse. I know other lyrics sites say that too, but I still think it's believe for some reason. Seems to make more sense that way.
I also thought "Sit there and bawl" was "So damned alone". But that's way off for sure. |

If you turn the lyrics page in the booklet 90 degrees, you get a hand shooting the middle finger at you. (It's true; try it)
So basically "Fuck you! I'm gonna save the universe anyway!" |

The Flaming Lips – She Don't Use Jelly Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I think that eternal sunshine was influenced by this song...charlie kaufman's one of those scriptwriters that employs a lot of weird influences- and also in that movie they mention The Clash- so it's entirely probable.
The first verse could be about sex in the morning. She "Makes toast" but she doesn't use butter or jelly- kind of a weird thought but yeah. The first verse is about sex in the morning. And the rest is probably about being poor. Or jerking off. Whatever you like to think about in your free time |

Gorgeous, one of my favorite b-sides too. I don't usually draw comparisons between Pink Floyd and Radiohead, but here I get a definite vibe.
I guess it's about feeling let down- roughly half of their catalogue is about feeling let down. |

Is it just me, or does "Have a chance" sound like "People change"? Like, exactly. I swore for years that it was "People change." I seriously think that's it, or at least, that's what it's supposed to sound like. Would fit in with the rest of the album really well too. Oh and I really like this song. |

Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics

This song is fucking mindblowing. I smell gunpowder and see sparks when I hear it. The lyrics point incredibly strongly to an apocalypse, acid or no. Jesus dead, Hell freezing over (COLD sun), plus the fucking fact that he mentions that he thought it was the end. He uses the 4th of july as an allegory for the apocalypse- fire, explosions..it also first well with the summer theme of the album.
My favorite part is "Light a roman candle and hold it in your hand"- If you've ever held a Roman candle at fourth of July, you're basically shooting flames from your hand. Very cool mental image.
And goddamn that riff. It makes my throat itch. |
