The Submarines – You, Me & The Bourgeoisie Lyrics
| 16 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's "bourgeois happy feelings" (not "push for happy feelings").
it reminds me a lot about the idea of going beyond "mere happiness" and wanting something more than that, like a more refined and worldly sense of happiness instead of just banal things, like tree-lights said.
And totally awesome job AE for having this free download! |

sorry, songmeanings.net took away "edit lyrics" for a really long time so even though i knew a few of the mistakes, i couldn't correct.
and to raconteur, i read about that interview too. |

i think the last lines could be a reference to King Lear and the storm metaphor that runs throughout the story. There's a rather famous scene between King Lear and the fool out in the storm. |

there's a lot wrong here ... feel free to correct.
comparing this song to long haul, it's a simple metaphor, yes? |

thanks man, I'll take a listen and change them again.
question to the rest: do you think it's an attempt at a political song? or is that too surface-level? |

Voxtrot – Missing Pieces Lyrics

yeah, definitely an unrequited love situation, probably post-breakup. seems like the girl doesn't want to realize what happened.
i'm just confused about the line: "but you are just a boy"
it seemed like this whole time he was speaking about a girl? but then again, if you make it NOT about a relationship, it could really just be about a lost friendship that he's remembering. |

okay okay, perhaps "we try and turn out hate in factories"?
i mean singers totally sing differently than the booklets (like add in small bits) probably because booklets need to be published way beforehand or whatever it is. but i'm sure the booklet captures the THOUGHT of what he's trying to say. |

thank you so much, "slight" is obviously more appropriate than "sly." though i have to say, i did like "psalm" over "sign."
the end is still a bit confusing (what i hear and what i read don't correlate), but that aside, i do like these lyrics better. makes sense. still wish i could figure out what the background lyrics are. |

the way it seems, something similar happened to thom yorke, but he eventually channeled it into the ending piece for "Romeo + Juliet" (the leonardo dicaprio and claire danes version), which came out in 1996; OK Computer doesn't come out until a year later.
If they're at the same time, it was obviously a past situation and finding a song for the movie that combined into this. |

some of the lyrics are wrong ... i can't tell exactly what he says, but i don't think it's "i am amazing."
& does anyone feel like this is like a sequel to "The Start of Something"? |

Voxtrot – Long Haul Lyrics

haha, oh the fishing metaphor ...
That aside, he's just saying that he's trying to find the "one real love" that he's never even seen, but it's just a long haul -- it's a long wait, basically.

The Perishers – Going Out Lyrics

I think that he's trying to find an ideal love, more than anything -- "I found your name in a song" -- I don't think he means it literally, just the idea of this girl. But it ends up that he's just going to go out and find some girl that will never be the one that he really is obsessed with.
Um, an imaginary unrequited love? |

I wonder why/how "hopelessness" got changed to "credit card" in the 1st verse. Still, I like the Margot version a lot better -- this one sounds too rushed. |

Brand New – Seventy Times 7 Lyrics

reading the Bible right now for class so here goes:
Then Peter came to him and asked, 'Lord, how often am I to forgive me brother if he goes on wronging me? As many as seven times?' Jesus replied, 'I do not say seven times but seventy times seven.' (Matthew 18:20-21)
Song is pretty clearly about mercy from friends as well as self-forigveness.
(argh, accidentally posted this on wrong song earlier) |

Yeah, I do think it's "hating factory," which makes more sense, if we're to use the literal definition of factory: "source of prolific production."
Rest of song seems pretty literal to me. Jesse has stated that this entire album was based on conversations he had with a schizophrenic friend -- clearly shows how s/he was questioning religion. |

Teddy Geiger – Try Too Hard Lyrics

i think this is a pretty obvious song, but i watched the Blue Room interview with Teddy. he had written this song when he was 11 or 12 and he had tried to keep asking this girl out over and over again and she just kept saying no.
i think it's pretty obvious that a few lines were added in, but it makes sense with the chorus. |

Bright Eyes – Train Under Water Lyrics

I just listened to this song for the 1st time, but initial take:
toxic and timeless = east river between manhattan and brooklyn. when he means the village, he just means greenwich/east/west villages, which is the cozier side of new york. in that sense, when he says "i always get lost when i leave the village," he's just so used to the comfort of somewhere easier to get by.
when he says "i was a postcard i was a record," he's talking about how all these places he's visiting on manhattan (island) are all the fancy places that you see in magazines: wtc, empire state, times square, etc.
what it all means is that, he's on manhattan and the girl is over in brooklyn, and he's travelling all over manhattan trying to mull this over, and all the girl has to do is take the subway from brooklyn to manhattan (train underwater). |

Brand New – Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis Lyrics

Although this song is pretty obviously about using a girl for sex, everytime I hear this song, certain lines stand out to just make this a generic song about using someone in general, with the "girl for sex" part as a case study. (Ex: "If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart" and the chorus.)
I never explored this cd so much, but glad that I now have. Very emo, but we can let ourselves enjoy that everyone so often ... |

The Weakerthans – Watermark Lyrics

This had been going around on lots of AIM profiles of my friends, none of which have probably listened to the song. I finally searched it up, found the music video on their website. It was so much more catchy than I thought it be for having only read the lyrics over and over again.
About a year later, I found more Weakerthans song and just got hooked on this all over again.
This song just captures everything of the modern teenage intellectual who tries to define everything and make these wild conclusions until we realize that it's so impossible anyway. This is a GREAT song. Though I can't say much for the melody and the singer, the lyrics are always just amazing. |

Matchbox Twenty – Bright Lights Lyrics

Sometimes I think about leaving for the city this way, but other times I think that for a suburban kid, you have to be stubborn. I take this as less of a love song and more of a general song about life, and taking it as it hits you, and still having the audacity (not cowardice) to realize that when it's over, it's over.
Maybe we are all running away from something that doesn't exist, eh? |

Love this song. Always some kind of disillusionment we fall into.
I think the "I think you're crazy, maybe" part is Thom talking to himself, but I'm not sure. He's saying that to himself, but then he just gives up being sane altogether and says "I will see you in the next life." |

"we do the best we can in a small town, act like big city kids when the sun goes down"
reminds me of the suburban attitude, the comfortable stability. pretending to rock the weekends, et cetera. reminds me of lazy weekends then driving in our luxury cars downtown after stopping at another starbucks. something about it speaks volumes on love -- not just romantic love, but something more than that. |
