it is genuinely surprising how wrong some of these people are getting the meaning of this song. going into long winded spiels about how this word means this and that word means that and it could be interpreted as this or that. but it is pretty obvious what he means, the lyrics are pretty straight forward. I am not trying to be antagonistic I am just shocked. I think the general idea is that even though he misses being innocent of substance abuse he still chooses to "get fucked up" meaning get trashed/smashed/wasted. not necessarily as a "coping mechanism" but simply because he wants to get crunk and that is how he has fun now. for a lot of people once you start it is hard to have fun otherwise, but because of the increased danger of getting fucked up, etc, you lose a part of yourself (your consciousness at least) but ultimately choose that path anyways. |

I think this song is about materialism and vanity. classy plastic lumber could kind of be like how nowadays people have plastic wood that they put in their fireplaces. it looks nicer but it's FAKE WOOD. the only reason it is there is for vanity. "classy plastic lumber." this fits along with the lyrics for the most part. the ugly lovers - pretty sons bit could be that the son used modern means to make himself beautiful despite the fact that his parents were ugly so he would/should be ugly. in simple terms. this could be complete bs, but it makes sense without thinking too much into it. |

I like this song. I think the baby crying is obnoxious. yes it fits in with the song. however, it is pretty obvious why it fits it. while I think that oberst was probably sincere when we decided to include it in the song, it still plays like he was trying to hard. I think there probably would have been a more suttle yet effective way to present the idea. he could have even included the baby crying somehow, but this way is just annoying. I liked the way modest mouse used it in milo's interlude more. |

I love this song. it's wonderful. while this probably isn't correct. I look at the song like this. I think that is is about a relationship gone wrong. where one person is just using the other. the majority of the song is the user talking to the person making excuses for themselves. telling them how they have changed and how they are not happy anymore. "letting them down lightly." in the end, the other party is saying, "well ok, you let me down lightly, that's nice and exceptable, so I killed you politely." |

while at first I was hesitant to believe pinkertonism real spoke to folds about the song, after such a clear explanation I am convinced. thank you for that. I, too, agree with the people who have said that though the song is about an abortion it means other things to them. "The girl is sinking him. The relationship is going nowhere. She's holding him back. We've all felt that with people too. Drowned by someone we love very much." that is really how I feel about the song as well. it's sad... but so true. at some point in time everyone feels that way. if they have not yet, they will eventually. |
