The Housemartins – Happy Hour Lyrics 16 years ago
djchapsticks hit it, but on top of that it's about being out with guys who are "on the prowl," who feel they have to get laid or else the night is wasted, and it doesn't matter who she is because you'll never see her again anyway.

It's laid out pretty clear in the last two verses.

Eels – My Beloved Monster Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks this song is about a dog?

I don't know particulars, but I know E's a dog lover and that he rescued a stray that'd been living on the streets. That's the kind of dog that might not be so pretty and might be mean until you give it some love, but then becomes a total sweetheart.

Maybe my opinion's a bit colored since I have that kinda dog myself.

Eels – Grace Kelly Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
This is E letting us know he's emerged from the dark tunnel of despair following the deaths of his mother and sister. This is the first song after the much darker "Electroshock Blues," which left us wondering if and when he'd jump off a bridge. This song tells us he's getting by.

David Byrne – The Great Intoxication Lyrics 18 years ago
I've always thought of it as a song about a man who views himself as a cutup and thinks his girlfriend is way too good for him. He's amazed by the fact that she'd even bother with him, but she sees him for what he is: someone with great potential if he's only given the chence.

Squirrel Nut Zippers – Trou Macacq Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a song about the disillusionment the band felt after making it semi-big and realizing the record execs took the lion's share of the cash and only cared about them as long as they were bringing in more. The singer looks at his own former naivete in the, "Once upon a time we thought we were free," verse (perhaps referring to when they signed the contract). The verse beginning with, "You think you got the stuff it takes to break away," is the voice of the record exec, treating the musicians with all the contempt and exploitation of a circus barker at a freak show. The band's take on it is that it all amounts to a pinewood derby as far as the suits are concerned, and it doesn't matter if they're making good music as long as they're making money.
