Led Zeppelin – When the Levee Breaks Lyrics

The Original had intended sexual innuendo aswell to think otherwise is just plain ignorance. I doubt there is a blues song with no innuendo whatsoever. This song would have been culturally relevent at the time it was made, similar to Barbecue Bob's "Mississippi Heavy Water blues" and "Mississippi Low Level blues" which I thiink "When The Levee breaks" was probably adapted from as it was recorded a good two years after Barbecue Bob.
Most of the lyrics from the Led Zeppelin version are taken from the original. |

popularised by leadbelly? I dont think so, I've never known this song to be a part of his repotoire. This song is sung by Bo Carter with lyrics very similar to these. Other variations also exsist such as The Mississippi Sheiks "Sweet Maggie" and Charlie McCoys "Sweet Alberta" |

Have no fear FackingHell is here.
The meaning of Rider is basically woman, an easy rider is a prostitue
As for sexually explicit lyrics "not being allowed" I would say you made that up on the spot from your own conception of what it was like 70 years ago. Anyone who has ever listened to Bo Carter will know that its just not true. songs such as "My Pencil wont write no more", "Pin in your Cushion" and "Banana in your fruit basket" clearly dont have any sexual conotations do they?
As for all of the Blues noobs who have posted here I think you should look up more musicians other than Robert Johnson as there are many better ones out there from the same period. If anything Robert Johnson marks the end of an era. |

Led Zeppelin – Nobody's Fault but Mine Lyrics

If you knew anything about early blues music you'd be aware that people always did covers of other peoples songs without giving credit because people knew where they came from most of the time and would see it as an alternate rendition. |

This song is a cover of a blind willie johnson song, that is of course if he did write it as alot of his songs were traditional spirituals. I hate it when bl00s n00bs come on trying to be clever because they've listened to one Robert Johnson song, When in fact they know nothing. |

Im not really a fan of Qotsa but I like this song alot, it sounds a bit like a Russian folk song, especially the accordian and the double stringed guitar heard in the first few verses. |

Henry Thomas Recorded it some time between 1927 and 1928, He was a folk/blues singer, most likely more folk as his playing style is not really seen anywhere else recorded and predates "Blues" music so to say, he was an man in his 50's when he recorded these songs and Blues was just really becoming very popular.
His album "Ragtime Texas" is available at Document-Records.co.uk |

Robert Johnson – Me and the Devil Blues (Take 1) Lyrics

Thats the kind of Image I dont like people to have of Robert Johnson ^
He wasen't even very successful atall until years after his death, while he was alive the only things he did to promote him self was to do one radio broadcast and recorded once.
The legend of Robert Johnson "Selling his soul to the devil" is actually wrong, it was said that Tommy Johnson a slightly different delta blues musician much along the lines of Ishman Bracey than RJ sold his soul (and he boasted of this)
Some credit this muddle to Son House who said that Robert Johnson must have sold his soul to get such music tallent in reference to the speed in which he learned how to play guitar, not literally that he went out to a crossroads.
Robert Johnson was in no way the Musical prodigy he is made out to be, though he was good I can list a whole bunch of others with equal or more tallent than RJ: Bo Carter, Sam Collins, Ishman Bracey, King Solomon Hill, Sylvester Weaver etc. And there is the fact that alot of RJ's songs are covers/adaptions. (32-20 blues and Come on in my kitchen to name a few) |

Just thought I'd come along and correct everyone here.
Leadbelly mainly sang folk music, but spanned other genras aswell (Mainly work songs) this is a folk song. Led Zepplin were covering leadbelly's version.
If you want the History of this song I can tell you what I know that Wikipedia dosen't tell you. I worked at the UK National Archives in a place in the North about 10 years ago for the summer. Anyway I was filing away news resources from 1723 - 1755 and there was a report of a song about some murderer (From a rich background) who was going to be hung at York Tyburn but was aparently saved by a bribe. It was called "Save me from the Gallows this morning" or somthing like that from what I saw it had some very similar lyrics to Leadbelly's version. |
