Garbage – Show Me Lyrics 9 years ago
It seems to me she's encouraging someone to express himself : "spit them out", "show me who you are", though she admits it is "not as easy as it seems". Because it is far easier to walk, run, hear, talk... than to express yourself in an artistic way ("dream", "sing").

It is about creativity and art : "there is no rope, there is no line", that is : inspiration needs an object, something to begin with. We are nothing ("specks of dust in the sky") but we can "leave [something] behind" with art.

Garbage – Man On A Wire Lyrics 9 years ago
I have no idea what this song is about but I just love it! It's striking how the song starts, sounding just like The Kills, then it sounds like Garbage again, then it starts sounding like The Pretenders ("Yeah, I see you sitting around"...) in their first album. That's not surprising, considering that Shirley Manson admires Chrissie Hynde since her teenage years.

That third translation is good - actually, I am french and I am NOT bilingual, which might explain why my translation was not exactly perfect! :)
Well, I just saw a video of Jacques Brel, and everytime I see it, it gives me the shivers, such a beautiful song. And so hard to sing, too! lots of singers have tried to sing this song but it is not as easy as it seems...

I've also heard that this song was about a transvestite, AND about the book you mentioned above ^^ . If it is so, then it is quite ironic because the whole story of the author being a transvestite and the book being autobiographical etc is a hoax...

It has just been edited, that's why it has not been commented on!
Carla Bruni's sweet yet beautiful voice perfectly fits with the lyrics and the melody of this song. She had a good idea when she decided she could sing and not only be a model!

Garbage – Queer Lyrics 15 years ago
Shirley Manson is not a lesbian, remember she had been married with a man for ten years when she divorced last year. She said that she had had once a lesbian experience but she had not liked it that much.
Anyway the song is awesome.

Quite unexpectedly, this is the favorite garbage song of my boyfriend :) And maybe mine, too.

Garbage – The Trick Is To Keep Breathing Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, "the trick is to keep breathing" means that the girl is on the verge of imploding, of beginning to scream at the top of her voice, which she does not want : she wants to calm herself down, which she manages to do by trying to breathe normally : you know, it's like when you are really really upset, either on the verge of crying or of bursting with anger, your breathing becomes difficult because your throat becomes narrower little by little and you can't help it. And you tries to control your breathing, and while you manage to keep breathing normally you can control yourself (I'm not sure I'm expressing myself very clearly hum :/ ). To sum up, to "keep beathing" means to collect yourself and to calm down.

Tryo – L'hymne De Nos Campagnes Lyrics 15 years ago

The Pretenders – Thin Line Between Love And Hate Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't know if I get the meaning right, but at first I thought that it dealt with the story of a woman whose husband always comes back late, never telling her where he has been. She never asks, anyway. Everytime he comes back late, she keeps being sweet, kind to him, so that the husband never "gives a second thought": to him, she's a devoted wife. Even when he hurts her, she does not say a word : she's keeping everything inside. But she suffers.
And that's when she commits suicide. That is how I understand the fact that she's in a hospital, bandaged from foot to head : she may have tried to jump from a building or something. And she herself is shocked by what she has done (which can be explained by the fact that a lot of people who commit suicide don't really want to die, they just want "a new start").
But I'm aware that some details don't fit with that. For example, with the chorus saying : "it's a thin line between love and hate", you would expect that the love and hate is between the man and his wife, though it may refer to self-love and self-loathing (it's far-fetched, isn't it?)
Then, why the line "...that'll really really hurt you one day" : if the man is such an *******, then I can't see why his wife's suicide would "hurt him" that much : one would have expected the woman to try to kill her husband or something...
Anyway, there IS something I don't understand !
(maybe the song is about two women ?? A mother and a daughter ? But then who tries to kill who ???? arrrgrh)

The Pretenders – Talk Of The Twon Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. And do you know what ? Shirley Manson liked it too (in case you d'ont know who Shirley Manson is, she is the singer of the group Garbage). In fact she is a big fan of Chrissie Hynde. That is why she sampled this song in their song "special". At first they did not get the autorisation from the labels etc, but then she asked directly Chrissie Hynde, who answered that, of course she could sample her song, and that she could even "sample [her] very arse" if she wanted to ! lol

Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics 15 years ago
Of course bellevedette is right!! It is obvious that in this song she is trying to express her feeling of loneliness, and that she not only fells lonely, but in addition nobody pays attention to her presence, or to her existence at all.
Above all the song is filled with a feeling of overwhelming sadness, which is expressed by the constant rain. It is raining in herself. I've heard that this sadness is linked to the death of her father or someone close to her : the sadness comes and you have the impression that it will never stop raining. "Before the rain began" quite obviously to the time the person was not dead or gone.

Indochine – J'ai demandé à la lune Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not shure the other person he's speaking of is a serial heartbreaker, because there is the line : "Et toi et moi on était tellement sûrs
Et on se disait quelquefois
Que c'était juste une aventure
Et que ça ne durererait pas"
To me, it means that both of us were thinking it would be nothing more than a "one-night-thing" but at the end they fell in love with each other and somehow they can't be together although they would like to, and it makes them suffer. Maybe they are deeply attracted to each other but cannot bear being together (a kind of "love-hate" relatioship if you see what I mean ;p ), or they are engaged elsewhere.

Noir Désir – Le Vent Nous Portera Lyrics 15 years ago
OK, here is the rest of the translation :
La caresse et la mitraille
Et cette plaie qui nous tiraille
Le palais des autres jours
D'hier et demain
Le vent les portera

mean :
The caress and the grapeshot
And this wound that gnaw at us
The palace of the other days
Of yesterday and tomorrow
The wind will carry us

Génetique en bandouillère
Des chromosomes dans l'atmosphère
Des taxis pour les galaxies
Et mon tapis volant dis ?
Le vent l'emportera
Tout disparaîtra mais
Le vent nous portera

means :
Genetics slung across the shoulder
Chromosomes in the atmosphere
Taxis for the galaxies
And my flying carpet, by the way?
The wind will carry it
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

Ce parfum de nos années mortes
Ce qui peut frapper à ta porte
Infinité de destins
On en pose un et qu'est-ce qu'on en retient?
Le vent l'emportera

mean :
This perfume of our dead years
What can knock at your door
Infinity of destinies
We chose one and what remains ?
The wind will carry it

Pendant que la marée monte
Et que chacun refait ses comptes
J'emmène au creux de mon ombre
Des poussières de toi
Le vent les portera
Tout disparaîtra mais
Le vent nous portera

means :
While the tide is rising
And while everyone is doing his accounts again
I bring into my shadow
Dusts of you (?)
The wind will carry it
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

Ok it may not be a very good translation...

yes, I think you don't need to understand french to love this song, because even when you're french (I am) you don't really understand what it's about (I mean... really) lol But anyway it's poetic and there is no need to understand the meaning of every word.

And quite ambiguous, too. (what do you think the sap stands for?...)

Noir Désir – Lost Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. Noir Desir is - I should say was - an excellent music group, remarkable for the lyrics as well as for the music, which is rare. What happened is tragic but I prefer not to think about it so that I can still appreciate the music. I mean, some people think the man's disgusting, so the music's disgusting, too. That's not my case...
It's a good thing that your french teacher did introduce you to Noir Désir ; I have the feeling that french teachers too often focus on "classical" singers like Edith Piaf or Jacques Brel (who were excellent but have nothing to do with what young people listen to...). It's a kind of cliché...

Zebda – Motivé Lyrics 15 years ago

Zebda – Motivé Lyrics 15 years ago
I hope you know that the lyrics of this song are not from Zebda. Actually, they are the lyrics of "le chant des partisans", which is the song of the French Resistance fighter. It has been written in 1943 in London and immediately became the hymn of the Resistance against the nazis. The mentionned "enemy" means the nazis and therefore, somehow the violence of the lyrics is justified. It is a song of fraternity, of fight against fascism, a call to resistance.
Today the song is still sung to call to fight against xenophobia, thanks to Zebda.
Our generation (20 to 30 years old) did not know the war but still the original song is really moving, so Zebda's song is great but not as much as "le chant des partisans"...

Tété – Le Meilleur Des Mondes Lyrics 15 years ago
well it's a very rough translation
I hope you can understand it
I just wanted to say something : this song has nothing to do with France. It is obviously about a war, not about riots. (and the media exaggerated a lot about these riots ; if you listened to it it was nearly a civil war, but in reality nothing of the sort happened... it was confined to certain suburbs)!

Tété – Le Meilleur Des Mondes Lyrics 15 years ago
Before there was poverty
But we had already trouble making ends meet
And now there is the war

This year, these damned servicemen
Have taken everything from me
Six brothers, a father, a mother
My friends, my country

Let’s go, mother
Let’s go away, it’s better
Here, there is nothing to do anymore
For God’s sake
Let’s go towards the east
Let’s leave this deathly place

Let’s go somewhere, where everything is fine, in the best of worlds (x4)

Mum unfortunately couldn’t resist the night convoys
The fake floors and the holds
It killed her
As for me I wept
Only when I realised
How much they had deceived us on the radio

In the newspapers
They were talking about an enchanting world (x4)

Somewhere, where everything is fine, in the best of worlds

Yeah, I guess French is difficult (I'm glad I never had to learn it as a foreign language!)...
But even to me this song is hard to understand.
It is nostalgic, even sad if you only read the lyrics, but the song sounds optimistic though. Although I don't understand why he should be optimistic : his friend never answers his letters, people are avoiding eye-contact with one another, he would like to go far, far from here... In short, it'snot really happy...

I have the impression that the man she's talking about reproached her to have these self-esteem problems. When she says "maybe I should write a letter", it sounds a bit bitter and provocative, don't you think ??
But I also have the feeling that this man is a little bit childish and naive : "sucking you thumb", and he's been a bit disorientated by her character.

Garbage – Metal Heart Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with you. I had never really read the lyrics because the melody is so interesting that I didn't feel I had to understand it to love it, but now that I've realised what it's about, I like it more.
It's a good thing that artists take position on that type of subject. The way it is expressed is very wise and poetic and the melody enhances this feeling. I mean, the subject "the media lies to you" is not really new, so it was hard to make something original, and they managed to do it yet.
Of course, the song makes me think of the film by michael moore "farenheit 9/11". You may not have seen it, if you live in the States, but here in Europe it had quite a strong impact and a lot of people saw the film, which was a sharp criticism (very subjective) of the policy of the USA regarding the war in Iraq.

I really love this song, the melody is so beautiful...
What is this song about? I don't have a clue, to tell you the truth... Well, I quite agree with what you said above. I always had the feeling that the first part of the song was about a conversation between her and a man she met for the first time. Then, it's not about the same man anymore, and it becomes harder to understand what it's all about. But anyway, I love this song even if I cannot really understand it, its mystery makes it even more attractive to me.
