The Ditty Bops – Wishful Thinking Lyrics

this is my least favourite of songs by db. it's so simple that it's boring and some of the questions are so darn obvious: little kids can't tie their shoes because no one has taught them to! but still good harmonies and stuff. |

Mozart – Dies Irae Lyrics

Dies irae is about a day of wrath and judgement at the end of the world. If you like this you should check out Libera Me from Gabriel Fauré's requiem. But I like this arrangement too. |

not true. they were selective mutes, and could not bring themselves to speak in the presence of anyone but each other. they were imprisoned at broadmoor because they set fire to a building. they used it as a way to express themselves as they could not speak. |

P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics

Wikipedia's definition of "person" is "a living human being". And I challenge you to tell me that a baby in utero (great album) is not alive. It is a human, a person. Why should it be disposable just because it hasn't yet been born? |

Why should an baby in utero be considered less human and more dispensable than a baby ex utero? If someone can give me a proper answer to that... |

there can't be a point where you say a bunch of cells suddenly turns human. it's murder. abortion is wrong. respect the woman's choice to have unprotected sex....and also respect the baby's choice to live!!! Abortion is never right and can never be truly justified. |

The Handsome Family – The Woman Downstairs Lyrics

Scary impression of ana. Good song. Shows how, even though your world is falling apart, things keep going. Also shows how corrupt society is. "The cops wandered through her dusty rooms. One of them stole her TV" |

Makes me think of someone who has been self harming (I can offer no excuse for this senseless self abuse), and was helped out of it by their family. They're begging to "be kept safe from myself".. |

Clearly a story...not sure what era from. Man rapes woman, she runs to the King and begs, he rules that the man should marry her. Interesting song, nice harmony on the 7th and 8th verses. Not sure about the violin/electric guitar combo, but good song. |

Translation (from memory so subject to error):
Sweet Jesus, Sweet Jesus
Sweet Jesus, Sweet Jesus
Who takes away the sins of the world
Let them rest in peace.
Lamb of God, Lamb of God,
Lamb of God, Lamb of God,
Who takes away the sins of the world;
Let them rest in peace,
Let them rest in peace,
Forever, forever, forever. |

Michael Franti And Spearhead – Crazy, crazy, crazy Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
When I first heard this song I thought of the Passion, even though that's almost definitely not right. Is Michael Franti religious, does anyone know? Because a lot of his non-political songs could have religious influence.
The "shine on" and "sing on" verses made me think of Jesus speaking to his people. Shine on because of his love for us, sing on and spread the word. And "your place in the sun" isn't hard to imagine.
The chorus doesn't really fit in with this theory, but it could. Crazy, crazy, crazy could be referring to the craziness of the fact that the Romans condemned him to death.
I know this isn't right, but this is what the song means to me. |

Martha Wainwright – These Flowers Lyrics
|
I think this song is about people moving on. It's an analogy between flowers that disperse their seeds, and their offspring (or effectively children) grow [up] away from where they were born and move on.
I think some of it's from the point of view of a mother suffering from empty-nest syndrome. She wants to be wild and free again, like her children, and able to run off and be a wildflower, rather than being trapped in her little life. |

It's great. The chorus is lovely and the change of dynamics is really uplifting.
It's clearly about a romance, one that's brilliant and strong. When they're together it seems like even the laws of physics can be broken - "No gravity". They can be below the sea, or even up in the sky. |

Laura Veirs – Magnetized Lyrics
|
This new album is outstanding. It's in a different league from Troubled by the Fire and Carbon Glacier.
This song's name, I believe, provides most insight to its meaning. I think that it's about being drawn (or magnetized!) toward something that's bad for you, or that's a hindrance.
The first verse suggests a man who seems to have lured a girl into a romance that ended in a bad situation (hence "Slain...wishing shovels would cast me in). The black tattoos represent marks of him on her, the fact that she hasn't and won't forget him.
Homing pigeons, of course, represent returning home. She returns to him, "hovering by his window" yet to afraid and scarred to return into a relationship.
I think the last verse is talking about the fact that she's trapped herself in a web by returning to him. Eventually, she will be ruined (possibly by obsessive love of him, or something along those lines).
"White spider stars" must be one of my favourite metaphors. Beautiful song. |

Delirious? – Mountains High Lyrics
|
I love this song. It's beautiful and so sad. I think it's about the fact that God's ways and means are too high for us to understand, and when God takes things from us or doesn't answer prayer is because He knows what's best for us, and the reason would be too "high" for us to understand. So yeah. God takes things and we don't know why because
"Your ways are high, too high for us" |

Erin McKeown – Daisy and Prudence Lyrics
|
I think this song probably has something to do with society's more sexist views of women, represented in two metaphorical characters.
Men desire women because they dress up and take care of their appearance. "Desire is dressing up Daisy"
Prudence represents false airs and graces by which women judge one another, and have exaggerated views of class.
"Prudence she takes off her
Daisy she fumble and laughs
And a meeting of the two is merely"
I think that's meant to show that there are people behind a dressed-up appearance and affected manner.
I could be desperately wrong, however. |

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
How about...the nobleman rapes a young servant, and her life is so empty anyway that she doesn't really think her life could get worse. Afterwards, he jumps off a cliff in despair (at what? don't ask me). The girl continues to work for nine months and eventually runs away when she realises that she's going to have a baby. She collapses and dies in childbirth, leading on Leslie Ann Lavine. "We both go down together" refers to mixing with someone of low birth will drag you down (in this case to suicide). |
