I adore this song! In all honesty, I didn't think I'd like Panic's new album because I thought it would just be a repeat of their first one. But, I was very wrong and this is probably one of my favourite songs.
It gives me the impression of a dark summer romance, one which he looks back on and realises it wasn't perhaps as perfect as it appeared in the sunshine. I think this was mainly down to the girl. She wasn't as sweet and naive as she appeared, really:
'your melody sounds as sweet as the first time it was sung
with a little bit more character for show
and by the time, your father’s heard of all the wrongs you’ve done'
In a way, I think he's jeering her. Suggesting that maybe things aren't going to be as pretty as they were when they were together in the summer. The last lines are probably the most powerful, and when he says 'I've never been more scared to be alone', it's almost a slight confession that she did mean something to him, at the time, but now he's older and stronger and wants to break ties with her forever.
'I'm putting out the lantern, find your own way back home.' He's leaving her to her own devices, despite any feelings he had before. In a way, the whole song is bittersweet. The music and the opening lines have an almost nostalgic feel but towards the end, he shows contempt for the girl he once loved.

I've always associated escape artist's acts with illusion- and i think that this is what he's trying to get through in this song. The romance is all an illusion, all an act. It can all be love in the spotlight but really the passion isn't there. 'timing is everything' they have to know when to tune into a romantic state. love this song! |

the video for this is awesome. the whole concept of the song reminds me of a soap opera- everyone is gossiping about the bride and it all gets back to the groom. its almost as if the groom's conscience is telling him to be rational about it all...'technically our marrige is saved'...of course it's not! 'haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door' means to things...the couple are either arguing or the bride's friends are gossiping and everyone can hear. this song is friggin brilliant!! |

this song is beautiful....the whole sound of it is amazing. i love the part where the girl is singing and he is screaming....it's almost as if her sweet voice is trying to cover up his screams of pain and distress. 'i love you even though it isn't fair' brilliant line! the intro sounds almost medievil....maybe thats just me. |
