Talking Heads – Road To Nowhere Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this is a song of beginnings. So it can be felt deeply by anyone who has reached a point in their lives where they question "What now?" and of course, the initial feeling is a sense of no direction. There is a sense of freedom here and/or recklessness. Perhaps both. As I reread the lyrics, I can't help getting the notion that for the main person in the song, the most important thing is the journey forward, whether it be to the "city in his mind" or not because even if we "wonder where 'we' are" he "doesn't care." Anyways, the beat and everything else makes this song hard to feel depressed even though it is on the road to nowhere!

Williams Brothers – Can't Cry Hard Enough Lyrics 16 years ago
I recall hearing this song on lots of 9/11 tribute videos... and I recalled hearing this song in my head about a week after my mom passed away. And it really hit me then because I couldn't cry anymore.. I was out of tears by then and my eyes were still red and sore. I think they put this song out in the early 90s but I don't recall hearing it then. Great song. Doesn't try too hard to explain the meaning of loss or the meaning of life or some granduer thought. It's simple and I like it. It focuses on perhaps a single moment/s when you just think of someone or something that is missing and that emptiness you feel at that moment.

Tears for Fears – Sketches Of Pain Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow.... found this song on a 9/11 tribute site... very evocative song and the little flamenco bit near the end works perfectly with the somberness of the whole "canvas" of the song. Awesome. Cool.

Van Halen – Panama Lyrics 16 years ago
This song makes me rev up on the 405 freeway near Studio City where the freeway becomes a stinking parking lot.... otherwise it makes me speed over the speed limit on the Malibu part of Pacific Coast Highway. Hella yeah! Rock on brother!

I just learned something new. Thanks, Nightvid.

BTW, I liked this song. FOR it's apparent pessimism, the effect of the song is a calming one.

U2 – In God's Country Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song. Musically, I love how that beat goes from a hard bassline to an immediate reply of the drumline. Mullen and Clayton drive this song for me. The lyrics are very impressive and I think they do reflect U2's experience in the American Southwest on the literal level and America and Ireland on the "other" levels. I drove many many miles in Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ohio listening to this song.

U2 – Miami Lyrics 17 years ago
Love the song. Can't wait for an ode to Chicago or Los Angeles. Heh heh heh. Point #1: U2 doesn't take itself too seriously anymore (i.e. Rattle and Hum [which was as great as an album could ever be but we didn't need to be told and reminded of that at every turn]) . Point #2: U2 is not afraid of staying the course. Bravo. And the car chase part is money.

U2 – Electrical Storm Lyrics 17 years ago
My take is that Bono is explaining the feeling of limbo, listlessness, and being lost after an emotional or physical strain (e.g. major accident, break-up, decision to move). Kind of like the post-traumatic stress one feels and trying to explain it to someone who wasn't affected. However, specifically, Bono does seem to single out interpersonal relationships explicitly.

Leonard Cohen – Everybody Knows Lyrics 18 years ago
Interesting. My "involvement" with this song was at a much more banal level. I saw Atom Egoyan's "Exotica" and yes, it was a great movie but that one song stood out so much I had to buy it. I got Cohen's album and sh*t, WTF is this? Some guy with lung cancer trying to sing? Well, I think he did have lung cancer. I bought the soundtrack to the movie and it was okay but it didn't have any songs on it. It might've been the score or something but I wasn't too sure. I bought the movie just so I could hear the version of the song I liked... besides other banal reasons. Heh heh.

Sting – Heavy Cloud No Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
Great stab at explaining life's mysteries and contradictions... i.e. women. Hah hah. Sting is so good at this. It figures he would do a cover of Elton John's "Come Down in Time". Pretty good song.

Sting – Something The Boy Said Lyrics 18 years ago
I know I'm not the only one who likes this song. This whole damn album is strong but this one setsup like a good movie. Great song and throughout this whole album, that harmonica rocks. Not overly strong like in the R & B style but very sparse and moody. Just right. Lush visuals in this song. Awesome.

Tori Amos – Past The Mission Lyrics 18 years ago
From what I could gather, there are 3 viewpoints in this song:

1) I = anyone really but I prefer to think it is an apostle or someone who is a scholar of the time period. Actually though, I think Tori meant this role for us or herself. Thjink about it. It's her way of placing us within the conflict.

2) She = Mary Magdelene

3) He = Jesus

Thanks to previous posters for explaining the Mary angle. The last lines seem to talk about the finding of Jesus' body and the doubt if it is his body. With this line of reasoning, I think Tori is saying that the apostles just continued using HIS name as if he were still alive AND with them in body and philosophy but that Mary took HIM in and really knows where he is. It sets up a doubt on the institutional aspect of Christianity. There is a difference between the faith of Christianity and the institution of Christianity. A definite conflict?

Björk – The Anchor Song Lyrics 18 years ago
Great Lyrics. They stand on their own but cripes, the melody part is ghastly. I used to play this song whenever my sisters would go into my room to bother me and then they would get the message and leave. Hah hah. Still, I like it and it was fittingly, the last song on the album. Whowouldathunk?

Marc Cohn – Walking In Memphis Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song. Wish Marc Cohn didn't suffer from the popularity of this one. He has much to offer. Usually, when people complain about 'hating' a song, it's because it was overplayed on the radio and other airwaves too much. It's been awhile since its success, so now I don't hear that song on the radio hardly. (yes, it plays once in a blue moon here in SoCal).

Bruce Hornsby – The Way It Is Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song and the meanings well put and not fuddled under any false lush imagery. If there's one thing Bruce is good at, he says it like it is. A LOT of groups write their songs with a lot of mystery, i.e. "it could be interpreted this way or that way" but Bruce has a great way with his songwriting. He definitely deserves more kudos than he gets. BTW, the piano riff on this one is too awesome. If anything, the 'lack of flair' in his lyrics is a great foil to his piano play.

Bruce Hornsby – Mandolin Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
Damn good song. Top Ten of that year IMHO. I still listen to it. BTW, isn't the lyric:

Listen to the banjo play
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go

Also, it's obviously a pining for
A) the good old days of youth
B) the good old days of a relationship

Whichever thought happens to cross your mind at the moment. And Hornsby's a great guy and talented piano man.

U2 – Helter Skelter (Beatles cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Damn. U2 is still numero uno after all these years. Even after they turned pop in the mid 90's they still have menaingful lyrics. And they know how to steal thunder like no one else. This version beats Jimi Hendrix' in a heartbeat, BTW.

Sarah McLachlan – Wait Lyrics 18 years ago
I also love the beat. Here's an interpretation:

She's singing from the viewpoint of an alcoholic (i.e. addict to whatever drug of choice) in a broken relationship and has come to terms that she needs a break from her habit first before she can attempt a try at the "dream" of "that precious little thing." ANyhow, I still love this song because of the emotional entry of that synth piano riff.

Sarah McLachlan – Possession Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song. Ahem..... from a guy's POV (me, that is).... I heard this song in a cool strip club that didn't play that bham da bham heavy loud music stuff and the dancers would ask the DJ to play whatever CD they felt like dancing to. So this hot blonde girl I had a liking to asked Mr DJ to play this one song. When her set was over (and boy, what a set it was) she came down to sit beside me and I had to ask her what that first song was. The next day I went out to Best Buy and got Sarah's album. I don't pretend to be scholastic about anything but on a purely hedonistic surface look, the song is about a strong sexual urge focused on one person. Male or female, it works both ways. But I also have seen the VH1 special and of course, Ms McLachlan's interpretation stands but come on now. Everyone puts their own interpretation into everything and it's always a little different due to different circumstances, i.e. environment, upbringing, mood, whatever you ate that day. BTW, I never scored with Chloe, the hot 5'3" blonde 'dancer' so whenever I hear this song on the radio or wherever, that's what I think about.

U2 – In A Little While Lyrics 18 years ago
edit: I meant to write we all know Bono isn't the best technical singer. He's no Pavoratti or the lead singer of Bad Company but still when U2 gels like they usually do, Bono's voice makes it work.

And the more I read into it, I can somewhat see how the first half of the song is about a hangover and how the second half is about U2's meteoric rise in popdom and how it's hard to get back to regular life (i.e. at home with family). And in this song he's basically hungover and talking to himself about how much he misses his wife and kid.

U2 – In A Little While Lyrics 18 years ago
Why anyone complains that this is a weak song on a great album is beyond me. We all know that Bono is the best technical singer. But for what he can do, he really shows it off on this song. His voice is the 'lead guitar' all the way. The underage garbage is too stupid to argue and I've read and reread the lyrics while listening to the song and I can't interpolate any meanings denoting or connoting a hangover.

U2 – Beautiful Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song and while the religious overtones are no doubt apparent, I think Mattius got it right when he mentioned the book "Ulysses" and all the parallels it has with this song. Bono is someone you would have to believe is an avid reader. He ain't your typical brainless lead singer. The man is an intellect. And also, besides singing the b-side 'Spanish Eyes' on some obscure album I believe with another band name besides U2, Bono also uses 'spanish eyes' in that great song "In a Little While" in the same album. Dude, if there ever was a U2 song you could play to get your woman in the mood, that would be one. WIsh I could sing it but my voice breaks during the falsetto. Hah hah.

U2 – If God Will Send His Angels Lyrics 18 years ago
I kind of like the flow of the soundtrack version of this song but the lyrics definitely are stronger on the album. Some people just like their artists to stay with a certain "sound" so those people trashed "Pop" so much. I still found so much in it to rally for and damn it if he made another 'city' song that I loved as well: Miami. Oh yeah, this song has THE best two lines about the division of the idea of grace (i.e. God/Jesus' blessings on man) and religion (i.e. Church's attempted control of grace). Which I think made a certain made named Luther an enemy of the 'state.'

U2 – Silver And Gold Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song that will never played played on air on radio for whatever reason. Probably because it's not pop-lite and requires a little thought and appreciation. And I agree with Arianrhod that Bullet the Blue Sky is along the same vein. Great song, great lyrics, simple yet great music. Some people can argue Bono doesn't have the greatest voice but no one can deny that when U2 puts out, the whole sound is wayyyyyy greater than the sum of the individual parts. And THAT is why they are still such a great band.

Cutting Crew – (I Just) Died in Your Arms Lyrics 18 years ago
Okay. I just watched "I love 1987 in 3D" on VH1 and Hal Sparks made a comment that in Shakespearean terms, "dying in one's arms" meant achieving orgasm. So I'm guessing that with that sort of idea in mind, the songwriters meant that the girl was so hot or maybe she like to dirty talk so much that he "achieved orgasm" faster than what he thought. Thumbelina figured it out on her own. I dunno but it still is a catchy tune.
