Derek Webb – The State Lyrics 11 years ago
Also there is reason to believe Derek would include references to Segregation and Civil Rights. Other songs on the Stockholm Syndrome are about the Civil Rights Movement and government interference (Jena and Jimmy).

Derek Webb – The State Lyrics 11 years ago
He could be talking about the legal doctrine of separate but equal used by the government (differences legalized?). Of course that is only a stab in the dark. The implication within the song being that since the government OK'd that concept, that makes it morally right to segregate. They (maybe the church within the US) were only concerned about it until the day they married their conscience to the state.

Derek Webb – nothing is ever enough Lyrics 11 years ago
I've always wondered what he means by "she's a jewel in the nose of a fool". Maybe a reference to the "Christian" music industry?

Derek Webb – Zeros & Ones Lyrics 11 years ago
"will either last (1) or come to nothing (0)" that is taking your own very unique meaning to the song and while it might be useful to you, it is highly unlikely Derek would use it that way. very few people would sit down and think ... zeros and ones... that must mean "will either last (1) or come to nothing (0)". how can zero's and ones not be in reference to computers? or the computerization for society? where else do we think about zeros and ones? i don't think it makes any sense to take it in any other context at least not for a wide group of people.

Derek Webb – Wedding Dress Lyrics 11 years ago
very true! and specifically the prosperity preacher he's referring to is Bruce Wilkinson (but im sure there are so many others it applies to).

submissions
Derek Webb – Wedding Dress Lyrics 11 years ago
The whole impetus to this song though was Derek hearing Bruce Wilkinson talking to a bunch of book sellers at a christian book convention. Basically telling them that his book will show them how to unlock all the secret blessings that they have been missing because they don't pray his "prayer of jabez" all the time. Bruce had a "alter call" and Derek expected nobody to come because this guy was selling a bunch of...junk basically. But nearly 60% of the room wanted to come up and receive the "blessings" they were "missing". So on this basis Derek basically describes the church (and himself) as a whore (through the imagery found in Hosea) because we so easily sell ourselves for money (and to ideas) that are not biblical just to achieve what we think is happiness and joy (for instance the prayer of jabez). When its clear from the bible that all our blessings are unlocked the moment we trust in Jesus and there should be no need for any other source.

Derek Webb – What Matters More Lyrics 11 years ago
The thing about the S word in this song is that its there to prove a point not just to make people mad (although if they get more mad about the word shit, then that proves his point). Its an idea taken from Tony Campolo who said:

"I have three things to say today. 1st: While you were sleeping last night 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. 2nd: Most of you don’t give a shit. 3rd: What’s worse is that you are more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night."

It speaks for itself and its interesting that it comes after his lines about talking and debating. Should we spend forever talking and debating about homosexuality? Should we talk and debate about the S word? or should we be more concerned with things that really matter?

Derek Webb – Heaven Lyrics 11 years ago
Its also a challenge to see the injustice of this world through this guy's vision of heaven (which really isn't heaven of course) and to try and to realize that we are supposed to be part of the making right all things here and now.

Derek Webb – Heaven Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is Derek's response to a pastor who was describing heaven in a "sermon" where he basically described it as you and all your friends from this life singing those good ole hymns and having fun in heaven. So Derek decided to write a song describing this guy's (and many people's) vision of heaven in more detail (and honesty). He basically suggests that if heaven was like this, then we would have classes and division in heaven (poor and rich/have and have-nots) and in that way it would be a lot like earth right now (hence the stores and parking lots that come up often in the song). We would all be happy with our friends insulated from all the other people (even Jesus).

Derek Webb – Jena & Jimmy Lyrics 11 years ago
Actually this song is not about the church or republicans but you're right its all metaphors. Derek had said himself that Jena represents the Civil Rights movement in the 60's and Jimmy (Jim Crow) represents the government's. The government was attempt to co-opt their movement by seducing them with power (or something similar to that).

Wilco – Ashes of American Flags Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that nobody has really keyed in on the "fallen leaves filling up shopping bags" part. Obviously after saluting a burned up American flag (paying lip-service to something that's charred and broken). He continues this theme where he says: "and all the fallen..." what are we supposed to think he's going to say? Probably... heroes or soldiers. But instead he says "...leaves filling up shopping bags". I don't think he's indicating soldiers are equal to leaves, but instead he's continuing to work off the theme of America's broken policies (ashes of American flags). Saying that these soldiers are dying for a broken America who only values worthless things as visualized by a shopping bag thrown away on the ground. Or we could go with the obvious statement that the leaves that are fallen (dead soldiers) are filling up body bags, but this just seems to crude of an analogy for Tweedy to make. Could be way off but that's how I've always interpreted it.

I'm pretty sure the previous comment is completely wrong about the meaning.

Glen Phillips – Courage Lyrics 12 years ago
What i find interesting about this song is:

"Some take the road to Damascus
Some take the road to Hell
I'll take Highway One to the evergreens
And everything will turn out well"

We clearly take away that that the road to Damascus is the road to salvation. As some might or might not know the road to Damascus is where Paul (acutally Saul who was afterward re-named Paul) was converted from being a persecutor of Christians to a disciple of Christianity and thus he was saved on the road to Damascus.

In a song called "fly to heaven" by toad the wet sprocket (also written or co written by Glen fillips), he writes from James (Jesus' brother) perspective about Paul's motives and how he (without ever meeting Jesus in person) took what Jesus said and twisted it and made Christianity what we know today (most would probably disagree with this notion since most of what Paul says is congruent with Jesus' teachings). None the less, Glen would appear to be questioning Paul's motives as he built the early church, logically Glen must not really believe salvation happened "on the road to Damascus". and then what does this short verse really mean? Of course he's probably just using the saying as everyone knows it (even though he might not believe it), but hey its still interesting to think about.

If you haven't heard "fly from heaven" i highly recommend it. Its very well written and thought provoking and even just sounds good if you don't listen to the lyrics.

Ok yeah this makes so much more sense. If you think about it he's talking about him being a salesman by blood. He doesn't like selling.. he's cutting himself trying to get rid of the "blood" that makes him a salsemen. I'm still confused about the connection with zeros and ones. I assume it has something to do with CD's or MP3's which are sold... maybe he'd prefer to just play live music to people.. cause thats what it's supposed to be about? Connections with people and him and his music. There's no zero's and ones there. And i suppose that might be valitated by the first verse where he says "Oh this was what you’ve all come to see and feel". Anyways this is just my random thoughts.

Caedmon's Call – Standing Up For Nothing Lyrics 14 years ago
in 5.. almost 6 years why has nobody commented on this song??? this is one of THE very best songs written by Derek Webb.

It's about his lack taking of a stance on politics. Through out the song it makes many references to the story of Peter denying Jesus. He sees himself being like Peter, in that he is to proud of himself to admit that he may sin like the others. Pride that cause peter to deny Jesus 3 times. This connection between pride and politics is a bit confusing but they're clearly there through out the song. Perhaps he's too proud of thinking he's not sinful and doesn't want to promote something sinful by compromising his beliefs (like one must in choosing political sides).

Ok does anybody remember the song "head like a hole"?? I should hope so. "god-money lets go dancing on the back of the poor" He's always talking in that song about god money... how people treat money like its god how it governs everything they do and their lives. This is greed. Greed has led to all the things you say this song is about. Whether they be in a "god" that endorses wars for captial gain. Or GW who endorses wars for the oil. or Government who also must endorse a war. So the ultimate point of this song is that greed permeates us as people and that it will lead to this "year zero"

Derek Webb – i see things upside down Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a great song that seems oft overlooked (actually thats true of this entire cd but anyways). Derek is drawing attention to how our values are so different from what God values and that God's weakest and most foolish moment are infinitely wiser and stronger than anything we can understand. Its amazing how God can take what looks to us (who see things upside down) like foolishness and weakness (Jesus death on the cross) and turn it around into something so amazing that shames the wise and strong men so that none can boast in his presence but all may enter in by grace through faith alone.

Yeah well who cares what the song says.. i mean really its hard to understand without reading lyrics and even then... The best thing about this song is it absolutely the most musically creative song on the album. Just as importantly its so much fun to rock out to, and I've never heard any thing like that before and since.

Ben Folds – Jesusland Lyrics 14 years ago
Busybea... this is not just a general hypocrisy song. Its specifically about JESUS and how many people take what he said and change it to be what they want. Yes we know ben is not a jesus follower, that doesnt mean he cant critique the things that so called christians do (or dont do). And just because this song isnt christian doesnt mean that Christians cant learn something from it and enjoy it. I think that busybea is too concerned about putting things in boxes and categories and keeping them separated.

Mae – Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics 15 years ago
here's what we know about the song.

1. they had an un planned pregnancy
2. they "saw the world through new eyes" meaning from the baby's perspective
3. the baby died somehow

if seeing the world from a baby's eyes is cause for abortion then there's something wrong with those people and i would never listen to Mae again. Therefore I have to suggest that the song is about an unexpected pregnancy that ends sadly in a miscarriage.

Derek Webb – the strong, the tempted & the weak Lyrics 15 years ago
This song appears to be about our eternal security as those who love and follow Christ. He also references "the strong, the tempted, and the weak" (it is the title afterall) which most likely is a referce to the strong and weak christians in Romans 14. Paul is urging people to be fully convinced of their beliefs, but also not to tear down their brother because of it. This would also indicate that the song is not only about our security in Christ, but also our unity under Christ despite our differing opinions on non essential things such as: days, meat, wine etc...

Switchfoot – The Shadow Proves The Sunshine Lyrics 15 years ago
This might be a little philosophical, but if there was no ultimate truth could there be good or bad? All things would just be a matter of personal taste... Thus by the fact that evil is so evident in our world, we know that there is infact ultimate truth (ie God) and that should encourage us to know He's always there. So whether our lives are in the sunshine or shadows we should be encouraged by that knowledge.

i really could care less about his emotional... background and how its so deep it is and that speaks about relationships... the BEST thing is that its related to Ender's Game! Such a good book i just started reading the series and i realized that the song was related to the book.

P.S. damn you emo people you're so whiny, annoying, and utterly concerned with "selling out". As if you wouldnt take a huge check if someone offered it to you. Dont worry they wont because you have to have a littlel thing called talent first.

As a christian i think ben has some good things to say in this song, valid points that more christians should hear. Another artists named Derek Webb (who is christian) has been making some music along the same lines. He wrote a song where the first line is "they'll know us by the t-shirts that we wear" obviously a play on the old song "they'll know we are christians by our love". Anyways i think more "christians" should hear this kind of music.

That is a possible interpretation, but in the rest of the song, when they start talking to someone, "daddy dont you love me? well why do you hurt me?" i'm pretty sure they're speaking for a child who is being abused, and not for us as christians talking to God.

Smalltown Poets – Hold It Up To The Light Lyrics 16 years ago
This song isnt sad! Its just a man struggling to make a very important decision in his life. He would really like to know beforehand how each choice would turn out so he could choose "the right" one, but so many times we dont even know whats right for us. What would be the use of putting faith in God to guide him to the right decision if he already has foreknowledge of what will happen? Pretty soon we'd start thinking we didnt need God because we have "control" over our lives. The bible says that we are saved by faith alone and that is precisely what making a life changing decision requires. Thus he comes to the conclusion that he needs to trust God, knowing that He will help him make the right decision.

I love how the use great historical and biblical references in their songs to get a point across. The main idea is that we always seem to think we can do things on our own and dont need God or his plan in our life. However when we realize we need Him, God still accepts us where we are and will pick us up again. I love the refernce to the shepard going for the 1 sheep out of 100, the work of Sisyphus is talking about a man who was doomed as punishment to roll a huge rock up to the top of a hill, but the rock would always roll back down and he had to bring it back up for all eternity.

This particular relationship that Derek had, was with a girl he met that worked in a coffee shop and who is/was an atheist. So I hope this explains so many of the things he says in this song. Caedmon's Call – 40 Acres Lyrics 16 years ago
40 acres and a mule were given to the freed slaves after the civil war. This song is comparing how we as christians experience freedom from sin and a new start through Christ's work on the cross to the newness and freedom that slaves had when they received those 40 acres and more importantly their freedom from slavery.
