ANTEMASQUE – Drown All Your Witches Lyrics | 9 years ago |
This is about Hurricane Katrina. It was so destructive to New Orleans because the levees were poorly maintained. Cedric wonders if the city was intentionally neglected because so many musicians and other weirdos live there, just like how societies a few centuries ago would accuse strange women of being witches and drown them. |
ANTEMASQUE – People Forget Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I'm glad to find lyrics that seem to actually be correct instead of the useless hazy guesses I usually see. "In every coroner's bag is an atheist, sprung from the foxhole that he dug"... that's a great line. Anyway, this seems to be about the Vietnam War. The protagonist is a fighter pilot who's been shot down over the Mekong Delta. His parachute has malfunctioned and gotten caught in a tree so he's just dangling there. Someone calls to him. He doesn't know if they're going to save him or shoot him. |
The Mars Volta – The Malkin Jewel Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Correct lyrics: i must have crawled through your bedroom door in a fit of jealous breath perched up on the bacchus foot of your unsuspecting bed from the blossom rags of my jackal croon to the stems of this cinquefoil i give to you the shrapnel with which to sprinkle in her soil because all the traps in the cellar go clikity clat because you know i always set them for you all the rats in the cellar form a vermin of steps yeah you know they're gonna take me to you you wash it down with harlot soap well is this is what you want? i'll paint your steps with the lilac stains of smelter revenant my cutlery is rattling in the dormant wooden drawers from the palm of my throne i beckon you to cut the orchid chord all the traps in the cellar go clikity clat because you know i always set them for you all the rats in the cellar form a vermin of steps yeah you know they're gonna take me to you i know a girl that was woven in spindle and thread wrapped in a bivouac of taffeta scaffolding web she tosses and turns and wakes all the children in nest yawning with hunger they take turns of nourishment and she says somebody help me is there anybody that can set me free from the mountains of avarice this i beg to you my ether turns flesh to gravel all the traps in the cellar go clikity klat because you know i always set them for you all the rats in the cellar form a vermin of steps yeah you know they're gonna take me to you |
Gogol Bordello – Trans-Continental Hustle Lyrics | 13 years ago |
The German words are spelled wrong. "Panzerfaust" is German for "bazooka". A Schmeisser is a kind of machine gun. |
Steve Earle – Copperhead Road Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Now, that's a bizarre thing to say. This song apparently only makes sense if you're from Tennessee. I'm glad this site is here so I can find out what's going on. |
Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Abba Zaba Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Abba Zaba was the name of a candy bar popular in California where Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) grew up. |
The Mars Volta – Rapid Fire Tollbooth Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's probably "stuck pig", which is a pig that's being killed. My friend wondered if the title is a reference to The Godfather, in which Sonny is killed by a bunch of guys with machine guns at a toll booth. It's interesting to see the differences in lyrics between this and The Mars Volta's Goliath. |
The Mars Volta – Tetragrammaton Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"You'll work the cocks I'll sniff your rocks" That is obviously not what's being said, but it is hilarious. :D |
The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Concerning the theme of truth - a lot of the stuff concerning the American decimation of Native Americans has either been misrepresented or watered down in history books for the sake of teaching... what exactly? Not history." Patriotism. |
10,000 Maniacs – Daktari Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think I heard that this was written after Natalie Merchant watched football players training. |
Andrew Bird – Opposite Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think the part about the cephalopod is a reference to The Metamorphosis, and the idea of suddenly turning into a bizarre creature. I hear "Today was supposed to be just another day". There doesn't seem to be a "not" in there anywhere, although that's what the lyrics say and that's obviously what it means. |
System of a Down – Kill Rock 'n' Roll Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is an apology for writing "Lonely Day". |
System of a Down – Lonely Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Awful. I wish I agreed with the theory that it's a joke song, making fun of bands that sell out and do crappy but popular music in an attempt to make more money, but if that were true they wouldn't make it a single. The guitar part sounds a whole lot like House of the Rising Sun. |
10,000 Maniacs – Trouble Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think it's addressed to an older person who's upset about something, but they don't want to talk about it for fear that it will upset the narrator. The narrator wants them to talk about it, though, because not talking about it is more troubling than any trouble that would result from talking about it. That was an awkward sentence. |
Mike Doughty – Busting Up a Starbux Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I've heard that he wrote this song after seeing a newspaper photo of someone in a protest kicking at the window of a Starbucks, and he was wearing Nikes. Doughty thought that this showed he was only doing that because it was trendy, like the shoes. James van der Beek and the Mowry sisters were examples of people who were trendy when the song was written, which was clearly a long time ago. |
The Residents – The Beekeeper's Daughter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The title is from a poem by Sylvia Plath. |
The Residents – Caring Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A girl/woman's father and uncle work for a zoo, and both of them are killed by the animals there. Then her mother kills herself. Probably a metaphor for something. I wonder what. |
The Residents – Act of Being Polite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
A man has no sexual desire for his girlfriend/wife, but he doesn't want her know that because it would hurt her feelings. Then she figures it out when he falls asleep while they're having sex. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Tropical Iceland Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The last verse on the EP version, including the backwards parts, goes like this: And if you ever need some hash or weed You won't be gettin' it here Just take a boat across the bumpy sea Go to Denmark, man, oh it's so near Is marijuana legal in Denmark? Maybe they were thinking of the Netherlands... |
The Residents – Demons Dance Alone Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I say it's about addiction. I could expand on this but I don't feel like it. |
The Residents – Life Would Be Wonderful Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The title is actually Mr. Wonderful. |

The sound effects in this song always make me cringe. |
The Residents – Bach Is Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The Southern Cross is a constellation that can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. |
Phil Ochs – The War Is Over Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Even treason might be worth a try" was censored out in a version I downloaded. Interesting. I love this song. |
The Tiger Lillies – Crack of Doom Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is about how death comes to everyone. Obviously. |
