A twitch is type of harness used to hold down horses. Usually it's used when some type of medical procedure is done, such as euthansia. |

The National – The Geese of Beverly Road Lyrics

The lads in this band seem pretty literate, so it's possible that the part about the "glimmering world" is a reference to Cynthia Ozick's book "Heir To The Glimmering World" about a German orphan growing up in Depression era New York. |

Carissa's Wierd – The Piano Song Lyrics

That Iron & Wine song is actually quoting this one when it mentions "a rumor she heard/heaven's a distance not a place." Both great songs though, and IW does have a song called Carissa's Werid. Guess Sam's a stickler for spelling though. |

Stars – The Very Thing Lyrics

Actually, I think you guys have it backwards. It's about a guy trying to cope with the fact that his life with the woman he knocked up and their child ain't cutting it and Amy's vocals at the end are the woman in the relationship telling him that if he leaves them, the guilt will make it so that no one will ever be able to love him. |

The Cure – Lovesong Lyrics

Kinda leftfield here but I always get a kinda New Order vibe listening to this song. The bass melody that kicks of the song and the lyrics that are really simple. Cure lyrics tend to be very flowing but this song is very structured. I do love it when he says "whenever I'm alone with you, you make me feel like I am fun again." If that's not love I don't know what is. |

The Smiths – Shoplifters of the World Unite Lyrics

Just before this song came out, the Thatcher goverment in England enacted something called Clause 28 which forbid the "promotion of homosexuality" in various forms of media. That's what Morrissey's talking about when he says his only weakens is a "listed crime". Not all Smiths songs are about homsexuality. This one is though. |

R.E.M. – Drive Lyrics

I think the rebellion thing is close but I don't think the narrator is the rebel. I think it's about a guy who's looking at all the cool kids on their motorcycles and wishing he could be one of them. He sees them going free (like kids playing hide and seek with authority) and listening to their rock and roll and he wants so badly to be one of them but deep down he knows he can't be. It's a look at the underside of the classical rebellious teenager. |

Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head Lyrics
| 18 years ago

Here's a new one. This just came to me. Some people here have been talking about the Iraq war and I think that's the right path but not quite there. That has never been Coldplay's big political target. Chris has always been big on MTF, that's what he has on his piano when they play. It stands for Make Trade Fair and I think that has something to do with this song.
When I hear it, to me it sounds like a guy who's talking about taking action. It sounds like a striking worker. I'll buy a gun and start a war/ if you can show me something worth fighting for. He's trying to figure out if going to war over his beliefs is worth it. It's like he's sending his lover away so she won't get hurt but he's having second thoughts about it.
That might be a bit left feild but it's just an interpratation. |

Bloc Party – The Present Lyrics

This song was recorded as part of the Help: A Day In The Life project, a benifit for children of war torn countries. The song is about the people in our lives who are always there for us and who help us through the bad times. "Time is a healer." We can only hope that's true. |

The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics
| 18 years ago

I've heard them talk about this as being the third part of an out of order murder trilogy on the album. My theory is that "Midnight Show" is the first part, "I took my baby's breath beneath the chandaler/of stars and atmosphere." This seems to be the actual murder. The album opener "Jenny Was A Freind Of Mine" seems to deal with the imideiate aftermath, I always thought of it as a guy confessin' to the cops after he's caught "Tell me just what you want to hear". This would be the final part, where the guy is trying to find peace with God for his actions. Who knows, maybe he's waiting to be executed and this is his last chance for attonment. That might be streching it a bit but The Killers seem to take pride in their ambiguity. |

Bloc Party – This Modern Love Lyrics

This song kinda of mirrors a relationship two of my freinds just got through. Like the narator in the song, one of them just wasn't mature enough for a true relationship. "Baby you have to be more demanding/I've never known what's good for me" and I think the lyric there at the end of the song is "Why so scared/ of her legs" But either one works well. |

Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life Lyrics

It appears I'm rather late to this but that's all right. This song really wierded me out at first because it perfectly described what at the time I thought was the biggest mistake of my life, falling in love with my best freind. "I went out in the rain/suddenly everything changed/they're spreading blankets on the beach." and at the end "I'd rather be working for a paycheck than waiting to win the lottery." If that's not love, then what is? I've been with her for four months now and this is, for lack of a better term, our song. |
