Xiu Xiu – Nieces Pieces (Boat Knife Version) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
From Tigersare blog : What does your sister think of Niece’s Pieces? That was kind of bad news, it did not go over well. At the time that it was written no-one in my family was really paying any attention to anything, so I figured I could write about anything really directly and not have it affect anybody, but that was definitely not the case. Since then we still write about whatever we want to write about but are maybe a little more elusive about the specific person that it’s about, just in an attempt to spare the subject matter’s feelings. We definitely don’t want to make anybody feel bad. That was a big traumatic mess in my family. |

Tokyo Police Club – Be Good Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song was really easy to write and seemed to fall into place over the course of a couple hours as we wrote it. All the parts are really simple. When I was writing the lyrics, I slipped some really inane words into the third verse just to see if anyone would notice. This was the only live session where the “Hey!‘s” at the end of the song sounded good. They usually sound really jarring and abrasive when we shout them into the microphones at live sessions but in the Daytrotter studio they had a cool room mic that picked them up perfectly. quote from the band |
Tokyo Police Club – Graves Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I gave this song to my mom for her birthday (which is a wicked copout from getting a present that songwriters are entitled to). It’s really new and the arrangement will likely change before it’s on the record. I’m really proud of the lyrics though. It has another verse/bridge part to finish it off, but we haven’t arranged it yet. This is the only recorded version of this song that I like so far. quote from the band |
Tokyo Police Club – La Ferrassie Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I wrote this song while I was living in Montreal away from the other guys in the band. Graham had put some instrumental stuff together on his computer and sent it over to me. I took a few seconds of drums and keyboards from the very end of the MP3 he sent and slowed it to half speed (which caused the pitch to drop exactly one octave) and then recorded it as it played back through a guitar amp. This is what I used to make the demo version of “La Ferrassie” and it sounds pretty much the same on our EP. I hated playing this song at first cause it was slow but I’ve gradually come around to liking it. At the start of the Daytrotter version, I’m strumming a mandolin which causes the bass to ring in harmonics which gives a neat start to the song. I was actually having a big Animal Collective phase. quote from the band |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Message Sent Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Danielsville, GA (9/14/97) - Only one verse. I really burnt you. I really made all you opiates? wrong. Wait around too much, you See it all go down and all around to see which one gets off. And I aint moving. Tell You something. All that I feel the world was on and still and waiting on for you. But now there is nothing, all but the weight that is coming. See it on the way and on the way and on and on. Knitting Factory (8/1/96) - 2 verses, (nice drums, haha) I really burnt you. I really made all you opiates? wrong. Wait around too much, you All the weight comes down and all around and see which one gets off. And I aint moving. Tell You something. All that I feel is all that all the wheels are holding on to you. And now there is nothing, all but the weight that is coming. See it on the way and on the way and on and on. And I aint moving. Tell you something. All that i wanted was that all the weight, it all to fall on for you. And now there is nothing, all but the weight that is coming. See it on the way and on the way and on and on. The first knitting factory show and the one In Madison, WI are both quite jumbled. The beginning and refrain is the same, but the middle part where he seems to make up words is slurred. Anyways, i hope this does the job. (quote Andrew from e6townhall) |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Message Sent Lyrics | 16 years ago |
don't you lean upright on it* green mine hollow day long to ever lean upright on it green mine hollow day long to ever lean upright on it green mine hollow day... the way goes on and on... (incoherent) i really burnt(?) you i really made all your oh be us wrong wait around to hide you roll around and down and sings the sound and see which one gets off and i aint moving tell you something all that i want the world it all comes out and pulls it on to you and now there is nothing oh, but the world that is coming see along the way and on the way and on and on and i aint moving tell you something all that i want the world along the hole and load it on to you and now there is nothing oh, but the weight that is coming see along the way and on the way and on and on... *this would make a lot more sense as "that weight on it" but it REALLY sounds like upright to me. also it's probably not "lean" but i just can't quite make out the word. quote from astralsled on e6townhall |
Shikari – Post Student Syndrome Lyrics | 16 years ago |
From the Shikari site : NOTE Even when I finished being a student more than a year ago, I still have my doubts about the kind of future that lays ahead of me after the safe world of university. My current job is pretty satisfying but I can’t imagine myself working like this for the next year or next two years. Making 9 to 5 days and purchasing a career without actualy wondering “why?”. At the same time I realize that doing something else next year depends mainly on my own initiative. I better make sure that’s not just dreaming…. |

Radiohead – Videotape Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Read this on a site : I was laying on my floor listening to Radiohead through headphones when the live version of Videotape came on. This is probably my favourite of the new Radiohead songs being premiered on their tour so I put it on repeat and tried to decipher the slurred lyrics. I noticed a few parallels between the song and the Hirokazu Kore-eda film After Life. when I’m at the pearly gates, this will be on my videotape, my videotape. If you haven’t seen After Life, the film is about a group of people who have died and find themselves in limbo (basically Heaven’s waiting room). A group of counselors interview each dead person and ask of them to remember their most important memory, the only one they can take with them to eternity. The dead people have a week to decide what their fondest memory is before the counselors recreate the memory onto film. Once it’s recreated, each person is shown the filmed version of their memory on videotape and they go on to eternity with that memory. no matter what happens now, I won’t be afraid because I know today has been the most perfect day I’ve ever seen. The other lyrics in the song don’t have any immediate likeness to the film so this might just be me grasping at straws, but I like to think Thom is just emphasizing on a fascinating idea with his own personal twist which, in some ways, sums up The Radiohead Experience™. Just an observation. http://www.pauseitmedia.com/?p=21 |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Starz Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Correct lyrics : We are stars We are We are stars We are We are stars We are The stars above, stars of grace Shining down what's left of face You hurt so bad This knowing, this fallacy I want so much To follow as I lead For love I keep Silent I weep Dead suns rule dead air But heaven is everywhere Stars... Torn from god and flung towards night Don't you want what I can't fight We are stars We are We are stars We are We are stars We are The stars that shine, stars that bleed Silver seeking destiny So follow please This hurts so much This knowing carries me We want so bad We forget we are free Spirit smile on Deep black diamond So rise the lost toys Island of white noise And purple haze We are stars We are stars We are stars What hurts so much Is knowing we are free |

Neutral Milk Hotel – I Will Bury You in Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've got some kind of theory about this song talking about Jeff Mangum being the you-person too but the you-person would be presenting him as a singer, not as a person, he does the same sort of thing in Little birds when he sings : "open up my mouth when all you even hear is singing, put your hand within me and you know what I'm feeling". I will bury you in time Bury you in time, could be an announcement of him stopping releasing music, as we all know Jeff Mangum stopped releasing music after ITAOTS. You have buried my beliefs He has somehow lost his belief in the singing side of him, that music isn't the way to solve everything, this he explained also in an interview with Pitchfork (if I remember correctly) And I am breathing into you It makes your features move Breating into you, obviously he is the you-person, and make features move, the misery in Jeff Mangum comes out through the singing of the you-person You can hear the children cheer But they'll need you when you're near About the fans? Everything you are I'm tearing through Everything you want I'm wanting too I gave you more than I thought I could ever do But I will never break you He never expected himself to get so famous with his music. The I will never break you part talks about the fact that he will return to write songs some day (hurray!!! ^^) And if I was the king of all the kids You'd you hear me singing in my spit But all you would hear is the shit inside my burnt emotions If he somehow would start singing not as the you-character but as just himself it would be too sick for people to listen too (in the days when he was recording ITAOTS, Jeff doubted various times wheter or not his songs weren't too sick to be released) Into this hole where you and I will sing our songs unbroken Another clue that he and the you person could be the same I would like to remind you this is a pure subjective thing how I view this song, further it's one of my fevourite songs from NMH, basicly beacuse of the intense singing of Jeff here. |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Bucket Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Jeff once had a dream about monks carrying buckets or something, read it in the 33 1/3 book written about In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, so I'm pretty sure it's based on that. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Ghost Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Original quote from Jeff : When I started writing "Ghost," the song that goes [he sings] "Ghost ghost I know you live within me," we thought we had a ghost living in the house, in the bathroom. So I locked the door and started to sing to the ghost in the bathroom. But that was sort of like singing about the ghost who we thought was whistling in the other room, and that kept waking me up, and then also a ghost that may or may not live within me. And it ended up being a reference to Anne Frank, too. A lot of the songs on this record are about Anne Frank. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Ferris Wheel on Fire Lyrics | 17 years ago |
From the interview mentioned before : How much of an influence are the sounds of the circus? I'm very influenced by the circus. And by my dreams. In a lot of dreams I have, I'm in the circus. I'll dream there's a Ferris wheel in flames, and I'm walking through the crowd. |

Why? – Whispers Into the Other Lyrics | 18 years ago |
From an interview : This was the only song written after we had split up. I stayed over her house one night ’cause I had locked myself out of my house. I was taking a piss and I found a fuckin’ used condom in the trash can. The absolute worst feeling you can have ever. Needless to say, I couldn’t sleep that night. |
Why? – Gemini (Birthday Song) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
From an interview : This is about [my ex] again. We went to Cincinnati for my brother’s wedding. We were staying at her parents’ old house, which was empty except for a bare mattress on the floor. She was sitting there clipping her toenails and just letting ’em fall. Certain girls can get away with that. If I did that, I’d be fucking nasty. But there’s a certain kind of girl that can get away with that and still be attractive for some reason. That became this visual metaphor for what our relationship was. The song is like a diary of the time. An “elephant eyelash” is a hard-on. I like to make my own pantheon of slang. Isn’t having a hard-on kind of vulnerable? It’s an anticipation. You’re always anticipating that things are gonna be cool in a minute. “I’m gonna stick my dick in a vagina in a minute, and everything is gonna be cool.” But you’re just standing there with a hard-on. |
Why? – Yo Yo Bye Bye Lyrics | 18 years ago |
From an interview : We were playing this show in Tempe or something, and this girl comes up to me. I was looking at her the whole time. She was really cute. She gives me her address if I wanna be pen pals or something on some 13-year-old shit. So I wrote a letter to her. In San Antonio, I called my girlfriend and told her the story. She said, “You fucking asshole!” and broke up with me. I was sad as hell, walking around, looking for a pole to do pull-ups on and started to write this song. We were heading home from San Antonio. You stop at rest stops every three hours and there’s always a fucking DQ. We were in DQ and this guy was like, “No more! I can make no more cones! No more cones! Only Blizzards!” All these fucking fat people in there like [in a southern accent] “Goddammit, I gotta get a fucking Blizzard? I wanted a cone!” I wasn’t talking to nobody because I was so depressed, and then the line popped in my head—“I’m fucking cold like a DQ Blizzard”—and I started cracking up. Can I say that in a song? It was just the way I felt right then. It was so gritty it felt like the right thing to say. |
Why? – Fall Saddles Lyrics | 18 years ago |
From an interview with him : This song is written to my dad. When I was 13 he gave me this tape he had just found in the closet. “Listen to these songs I recorded when I was 18.” They were really fucking dope. When I moved to California I took the tape with me. And I found that past the songs, there’s this letter to my mom. She had broken up with him and moved to Kansas City, and he had just found God in the Jesus Freak movement. He sent her this recorded letter, so that’s his voice cut up on my song. “Your fisted language still affects my style, though I still catch your visions like a child.” That was from one of his songs. Somebody says his voice sounds like Jerry Garcia, but I don’t know if that’s the case since I never listened to the Dead and he never did either. Our relationship has always been a little weird because he has that basis of spirituality; he’s a messianic rabbi—Jews who believe in Jesus. Holidays are quite a mix of things: speaking in tongues and doing Passover dinner. |
