But I always think of a woman who has just had a baby and her partner has passed away. It sort of fits. And the song is sung by her friends or brothers who will take care of her but she also needs to stand strong on her own and take care of things. |

Interesting idea of feeling safe in this song though - not necessarily safe from harm, but just the safety that you feel in the comfort of being at home. With a woman you love, as you did with your mother as a child. Like this is where I'm meant to be. |

To me this is about being tempted by someone while in a relationship with someone else. We used to stay up all night talking about how nothing could ever happen between us. But as soon as there was contact, everything was out the window. The 'moral ground' is the limits of what they believe they should or should not do - cheating etc. The time is nigh, removing wings and trying to fly, is trying to live without each other, trying to forget about each other, despite being in love. Very painful song, and so accurate to those feelings of denying what may be true love because of some kind of boundary. |

It's like he's stuck in a really intensely immoral life and he's trying to get out of it. A lot of the words used seem to be just powerful imagery, maybe drawn from personal experience. Such a sweet song, love Tom Waits' growl. This song has such a dangerous feeling to it, I love it. |

Yeah I heard (/read) that this was about his panic attacks. Makes plenty of sense. That feeling of wishing you could be someone else for a while, and not be stuck in your own mind. He is probably freaking himself out, getting disturbed by his own thoughts - "I'm a loner in a catastrophic mind", "My own worst friend and my own closest enemy..." Yeah, it's quite obvious.

This is my favourite Dropkick Murphys song. It's so full of emotion and desperation, kinda makes you feel sorry for the guy until the chorus comes along! He sort of seems to regret everything he may have done, but in a way he's given into the reality of it - that he'll never be able to change and forget the past.
Also, the mandolin solo is one of the most mind-blowing things I've ever heard. At 2:46 into the song. The drum rolls... the mandolin...oooooh my god. Incredible. |

Whatsername, I really liked your song(s?). I reckon I really know how you feel, if you'll believe me... :-) Anyway, this song is class. And Holden Caulfield never fails to crack me up, every time I read Catcher in The Rye. Hahaha, when he's in the dorm at the beginning and says to Ackley, "He's crazy about you. He told me he thinks you're a goddam prince"! hahaha and when he lies to that guy's mum on the train, says he has a brain tumor. SO funny. I said it in another forum thingy but every time I read Catcher In The Rye, I think of Billie Joe. Now that I've got the Kerplunk album. And I love the thought of Billie being my age when he wrote and sang it. It's cool. |
