| The song is about depression ("losing my mind, losing control", "drowning") caused by failure/disappointment. He expected to succeed in life but has not, so, "fortune I should have found by now".) "Cough syrup" is a metaphor for the tough lessons taught by life. Life's lessons are bitter but they are good for you and will eventually make you a better - same as cough syrup's bitterness. He is now coming out of his depression ("I’m coming up now coming up now out of the blue") but wonders how many more lessons he has to learn to start living again - but somehow he knows that the life will never really stop giving "lessons" as he prepares for the next spoonful of "syrup". Pretty straight forward? | |

What music and love is all about. Life kicks your ass and you get "buried" - but you recover with the help of music, "rise in song", and love "I got you". The "Soviet cries" could refer to a guy in rehab with the TV blaring CNN warning about how bad the world outside can be. Kitch is slang for throwing up. Nice tune - well constructed with a kaleidoscope of influences. |

Heard this ---- At a concert in Foxboro, Massachusetts the Fixx's lead singer stated that "saved by zero" meant masterbation. The "zero" is the circle made by a man's hand when he grips his member! OK OK - you want a more philosophical interpretation? How about...zero symbolizes the self. As in your entire reality eminates from yourself. So you can only be saved by yourself hence "saved by zero". So whatever predicament you are in (your dreams disown you), you can only be saved by yourself. Maybe, someday, you will save yourself (i.e. by reading - words that teach you.) In a nutshell, it's about depression and using philosophy to get yourself out. |

heh heh. i listened to the song again and Rovian spin-doctor-politics fits right in...the song was waayyy ahead of it's time. fav lines: "You got a blank face which irritates". I don't see the drug addiction angle. It seems more about the deception in relationships and the disasters that follows...in a macro sense it certainly could be about politics. |

The narrator is harboring an addiction/compulsion because he is going back. drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc. The mother and father archetypes: The overindulgent mother and the absent father. The boy blames his absent father for his situation. The original meaning of the song, girls point of view and brothel, is lost in the rewrite. Whatever the original intention of the song, imo, the theme is universal. Namely, making a living at something you know is sinful or disingenuous or just plain boring, but yet you cannot stop because there are no other options and you must go back. Just basic survival. i.e., when we go to our "9 to 5" job aren't most of us going to our "house of the rising sun" to wear that "ball and chain"? |

This song delves deeply into the emotions of a break up but is strangely comforting. It really delves into the psyche behind a break up of a relationship. It's intensely personal, yet universal at the same time. Most people won't really understand this song until they experience the break up of an intense relationship. "Mother" symbolizes a separation of a child from the mother. Being born and no longer in the safety of a womb (or relationship.) You are back out on the cold, hard world. "soil falling over my head" - The end of a relationship is the feeling of death...as if something has died within you. "do you think you can help me?" - Speaks to his mother...trying to run back to the safety of the mother archetype. "Sad veiled bride, please be happy handsome groom, give her room loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly although she needs you more than she loves you" - A little tougher to decipher...maybe just a commentary on relationships and marriage. How many really marry the one they truly love? Marriage is more economics than it is love? "I know it's over and it never really began but in my heart it was so real" - Here he admits that it was not something that he would define as a relationship..but yet he fell truly deeply in love. "If you're so funny then why are you on your own tonight? ... while they are in each other's arms" - Here comes self doubt...all a part of the getting dumped process. "It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate it takes strength to be gentle and kind it's over, over, over" - A mix of emotions one feels toward the other person. "Love is natural and real but not for you, my love not tonight my love love is natural and real but not for such as you and I, my love" - the love he had was true but not for his ex. Definitely not for him (nor for any of us either as we must once again play the game to get love again.) |
