I like deliriumtrigger's comment, that seems to fit in with the other wedding imagery. On the Blackball Records site I found a page with Blake's explanations of all the Dear You tracks, he said this... "Sluttering - A true story, ugly and forever. The word "sluttering" means a kind of drunk muttering. I actually defined it once as "pontification under duress." There was an angry love triangle and then an elaborate revenge plot designed to incur maximum humiliation. It succeeded horribly and I wound up in the hospital in Concord." |

I think at the beginning at least it's about the frustration he feels at the music industry as a whole ("Depressed by the smiles, all the phonies, and the fakes") and touring in particular ("Depressed because everything's so far away"). The machine in the third line could either be the band's van or the industry "machine" or one as a metaphor for the other. |

The cd doesn't have the lyrics, but it does on the band's website. Here's the missing ones... I did the same! But even the fountain of all knowledge, aka Wikipedia, didnt have anything so i guess they're fictional. From the opening verse at least it sounds like it could be about eloping, kinda like exit music by Radiohead, but even better! |

I like what Whisper_Goodbyes said about him kinda admitting defeat by changing "loverboy" to "loverman" near the end. There's loads of good imagery in this song, the ribbon of green i guess refers to it being the colour of envy, and since it's tied round his guitar he's sort of admitting the jealous nature of this song. The "eat from a can" bit is either saying he's going to keep drinking or saying he's going to have some canned meal for one. "What am i darling....a piece of your cake" to me brings up the wedding theme from earlier in the song. Also since "a piece of cake" is used to mean something easy, it could be suggesting how easily she got him to fall for her. Just my thoughts, could be totally wrong! |

I think these basically set out the situation that he's either kissed or had a one night stand with a girl who he loves but she is attached to someone else, and he's hitting the bottle to cope with it. |

OK i may be stating the obvious here, but noone else seems to have mentioned it... "meanwhile tin men are led by little girls down golden roads that lead to nowhere" is a Wizard of Oz reference; he is comparing himself to the tin man who wanted to find a heart, ie he wants to fall in love but isnt having success (hence "lead to nowhere" bit) |

"My armor plated car that crashed straight into your thighs" - i get the impression that these lines means he's overly defensive or protective, and ends up hurting whoever the song is addressed to. "While plastic arms carry you away" could be about how this person is making new friends/got a new boyfriend who he thinks is fake. |

| I came across the extra lyrics "dan's alright, he's doing fine" on some other lyrics site (it doesnt have those lines in the cd booklet either). Guess that refers to their guitarist, dan. That line and the rest I guess make the song about some girl he's grown apart from but can't forget. | |

Yeah I agree about the personification of the river like he's marrying it. The way he refers to the bridge as his "mistress" but the river as his "lover" gives the impression it's the river he feels he really belongs with, ie suicide by drowning is his best or only option. I like the line "farewell scenic highway overpass", you don't normally associate a highway overpass with being scenic, i think it's kinda said ironically, showing how ugly the world is to him |

On the video recorded at Hellfest Jacob Bannon introduces it "..This song's about bad luck, which we all have. It's about the black cloud that follows me and follows you.." So with that in mind, the bit about "her ring" may be about a personification of his bad luck that he's "married" to, ie stuck with for life but trying to escape. ...or not, i dunno |

Sounds to me like Jacob (or at least the narrator) is trying to get over the relationship that runs throughout the whole album. The references to awkward days and tongue tied losses show how he still can't function properly with or without her and the burdening nightsweats sounds like he's still waking up sweating, dreaming about the relationship. "Searching the streets with bedroom eyes" is a really powerful line, sounds like he is trying to meet someone new for meaningless sex to help him forget. Finally run on girl, run on is possibly imploring her to move on, in the hope that he can too. |

| I agree with mattd23 that this is from the POV of a depressed person who feels they've let down their parents (the "real son to my dad" part). It's all adressed to his partner who apparently is not as down as him (the opening lines suggest this), and he seems bitter that they are in a better mindset, and he feels undeserving of their affection | |

hm.."my bugs will live in song" certainly has a ring to it... oh yeah, also wanted to say the "my parents fell in love and all i got was life" bit is kinda like those shirts you can get that say "my friends went to london and all i got was this lousy t-shirt", i guess that's intentional, he's feeling like he deserves better (but still manages to convey it in a brilliant witty way) |
