Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Does anybody know where I could still download the originally leaked version of this album? |
Tori Amos – Gold Dust Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Beautiful, beautiful song. Definitely about nostalgia and looking back on the past with a bittersweetness. |
Tori Amos – Hey Jupiter Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. The Dakota Remix of it is also really good -- I can't decide which I like better. My favorite line: "Your apocalypse was fab for a girl who couldn't choose between the shower or the bath." |
Bette Midler – Daytime Hustler Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I LOVE this song. I think the meaning's pretty self-evident. Some man keeps trying to win her over . . . obviously just for sex ("Flashy Cadillacs won't make me fuck"). But Bette ain't takin' it! Great beat. |
Damien Rice – Dogs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I slightly agree with Tavisk. I think this song is sang through a dog's/dogs' perspective(s). This would explain the time he uses "we" and "us"...it could just be a song about dogs adoration for their owner, how they basically view her as a goddess. The "wolf" could be her boyfriend or something. Anyway, just a thought. |
Tori Amos – Smokey Joe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree: this is a very beautiful song. I think it's about the darker side of the Feminine, which Pip obviously represents. My guess is that this Smokey Joe is an ex-lover of Clyde's ("He stole my sister Clitorides") who hurt her in some way...maybe emotionally, maybe physically. Pip took it upon herself to seek revenge against this Smokey Joe. She wanted to hurt him, but I don't think she did. The power of hate within her terrified her, but she did not really act upon that power. The bit about the pipe and him being wise and leaving probably refers to Pip talking to him and telling her never to do what he did again...she probably threatended him. Maybe she did hurt him? But she obviously didn't kill him. I could be way off, but that's how I interpret this song. |
Tori Amos – Dark Side of the Sun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Lyric correction: "Bushes burning on the mountain, Abraham and Ishmael, turn back the clock." |
Tori Amos – Almost Rosey Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a very fast-paced song, and it's taken a couple of listens for me to absorb the lyrics. I'm still not completely sure about what it means but... I think the underlying message is that once you accept life for what it is and start looking for and embracing the good things, life will be better for you. It won't be perfect, but it will be "amost fine, almost rosey." I'm not sure about the bit with Violet and her "endless want...tempt[ing her] to taste of her power." Anybody else have any ideas? |
Tori Amos – Beauty of Speed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm thinking this is about two people in a relationship...not necessarily romantic. They meet and things go so fast for them. One thing leads to another, and they're caught up in all these emotions and all these dares maybe... But quickly things deteriorate...they get out of control. But Clyde (the song's narrator) claims she was built to withstand intense heat; she can handle this other person. She has to constantly move and change in order to keep up with him, maybe. That's just my two cents... |
Tori Amos – Bouncing Off Clouds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with missblackeyeliner... At first, I wasn't exactly wild about this song, but the more I hear it, the more I love it! |
Tori Amos – Bells For Her Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is so haunting. I love the deconstructed piano. |
Tori Amos – Playboy Mommy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Most of the previous comments pretty much nail the songs meaning...but I think one of the most important and interesting aspects of this song is that the narrator is some sort of nude model/playgirl, and I think the narrator attributes this fact to the reason her unborn baby "left her." And then she tells her dead baby to ask the soldiers who used to "admire" her pictures while overseas to help her/him get into heaven, or something like heaven. Anyway, this might be my favorite Tori song! Really, really love it. |
Kate Bush – Kite Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree. I love this song. I think the meaning is pretty straightfoward. The narrator is tired of life and stress. So she wishes she were a kite so she could fly and not have worries...somehow, her wish is granted, and though at first she likes her new life as a kite, she soon realizes she's completely out of her element; she's a fish out of water, and she longs for the safe ground again. A lot of meanings flowing around in this very allegorical song. |
The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics | 17 years ago |
mrbun, I agree with you. I think this song does have a certain humor and satire about it. But at the same time, I think there is a bigger, more empathetic message behind the humor. Tori Amos's version of the cover, while much more subdued and brooding, seems to completely wipe the humor away from the song and gets that buried message across much more openly. I mean, it is sort of funny in a morbid way; but it's also disturbing. Yet, the protagonist in the song is obviously just a girl who couldn't deal with the pressure of life anymore. We all feel like that sometimes. Not many of us do like Mondays. I like both the original and the Tori cover; they both have their pros and cons. |
Lily Allen – Nan, You're a Window Shopper Lyrics | 17 years ago |
You know, I didn't even think about the 50 Cent song until just now. But I guess that makes sense... I think this song is just about an older woman who basically doesn't know how to live life...she scoffs at everything, won't indulge in anything, won't smile at anyone. |
Tori Amos – Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I like this cover...it's very simplistic and very straight to the point...yet, I still think I like the original better. But I still love Tori! :) |
Tori Amos – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a really heartbreaking song. Tori's voice is perfect for it. One of my more favorite covers on Strange Little Girls. |
Tori Amos – Raining Blood (Slayer cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
How anyone can refer to this song as beautiful is beyond me. At its core, this song is very, very evil and very, very disturbing. True, Tori's voice and her piano is beautiful, but the song itself is brutally ugly. I'm surprised to see how many people that commented here seem to be both Tori and Slayer fans...which completely floors me, as they seem to me to be two utter, irreconcilable opposing extremes. I think Tori covered this song to peel away the silly guitars and gratuitous, screaming vocals so she could reveal its aforementioned evil core. She wanted to show what kind of crazy people (and crazy songwriters) are out there. She wanted to show the evil that lies in some people. She wanted to show the cruelty both feminism and masculinity can possess. |
Tori Amos – Wednesday Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I look at this song on a much less national level: I just think it's about this woman (maybe in her 40s or 50s) working hard in a small town, and she's become tired of her husband (who is the "you" in the song that's not a "Templar man"). The whole bit about the phantom is the woman knowing something's not right with the marriage, that she doesn't want to be in it anymore. "Seems as if we're circling for very different reasons But one day the Eagle has to land" I think this part reflects how even though they're both in the same marriage, they're looking at it and experience it differently. He's perfectly content with it; she's not. Or something like that. I could be way off; either way, I love this song. :) |
Sufjan Stevens – Decatur, or Round of Applause for Your Stepmother! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is pretty much going out on a limb, but do y'all think that the step mother this song speaks of is actually Decatur? One commenter noted how it's a not-so-pleasant city in reality, and perhaps that could tie in with the narrators' attempts to do "everything to hate her." Maybe these are people who aren't Decatur natives, but they had to move to Decatur (which is why it's refered to as a step mother). Eventually, however, despite 'her' flaws, the narrators are able to see all her beauty and all her love and appreciate her. Something to think about... |
Melissa Etheridge – All American Girl Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It certainly is. I think it's basically just an ode to the strength and endurance of women...particularly American women. :P |
Sarah McLachlan – Ice Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I can see how it could relate to a prostitute. In fact, that makes a lot ofperfect sense... Ice could signify the prostitute true unwillingness to commit to the sex...but it's thin, because in her mind, she has to do it. Dive in means just do it. The coldness of the ice is forgotten once the initial "plunge is taken," because she probably becomes caught up in the act. Of course, the whole song is extremely dark and sad...this speaker obviously is haunted by herself and her actions, and she wishes she could find a way out, but she thinks that she can't. The second verse could almost be like the roles of shame reversed; instead of the prostitute being ashamed during the actual act, after the sex, the man who paid her realizes how shameful what he did is. He sighs knowing what he did was wrong, and he tries to find in his heart maybe some comfort, but his god has abandoned him, and his angels are nothing but tongues without a body...the serpent's tail has come undone (the realization of sin and humiliation). But really...this song could be interpreted in a lot of different ways. Obviously, though, it has strong sexual undertones. |

Sarah McLachlan – The Path of Thorns (Terms) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this song's meaning is pretty clear: a man the speaker of this song loved leaves her, to go on to different things, and the speaker recalls all they've been through, and she realizes she should have seen it coming. Anyway...the Mirrorball live version of this song is waaay better than the studio version on Solace. Great song either way, though. |
Melissa Etheridge – Ruins Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is one of my favorite Melissa songs. I personally think that each verse is talking about a different thing, though I could be wrong. In the first one, I think it's about a past lover, and this lover wants to reconnect with Melissa, but Melissa knows that's not a good idea. The second verse could be about the same person...but she remembers how back when they were together (or maybe just friends), they were both afraid (probably about being homosexual and coming out, but it could apply to anything). Third verse might be about washing out the wounds one gets from living by "carry[ing] it down to the waterside." The beating wings could symbolize a lot of things. Maybe they just represent her past coming to haunt her. And that's what I think the whole song is about: just learning to accept one's past, no matter how hard/painful it has been, and then healing from it and learning lessons from it. But before one can completely heal, one has to learn how to feel and to be true to themselves. My interpretation is certainly just my opinion. Nonetheless, I love this song. |
Kate Bush – Egypt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is pretty creepy. But it really makes no sense. Someone obsessed with Egypt? That's what the obvious would be...like a woman obsessed with a violin in "Violin." Or more? |
Kate Bush – The Infant Kiss Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Lolita in reverse. Kate was always the one to tackle anything tabooed... The line "There's a man behind those eyes" is interesting, because it's sort of the opposite of the situation in her single "Then Man With the Child in His Eyes"... |
Kate Bush – Violin Lyrics | 17 years ago |
naw, i just think it's about a woman OBSESSED with the sound of violins but maybe there is some deeper meaning you never know with kate |
Kate Bush – Blow Away (For Bill) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I love this song for Kate's amazingly versitile voice. One of her band members mentions that music is all he has. Kate's wondering how that's so. How can someone's life be about or centered around just one thing. And there are undercurrents of death is this song... It really doesn't make much sense. Anybody else have any ideas? |
Kate Bush – Sunset Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is absolutely beautiful "could be honeycomb in a sea of honey a sky of honey" God, Kate Bush is amazing. |
Kate Bush – Night of the Swallow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
something like: the narrator is helping a very close firend (who apparently did something illegal) and other criminals escape to some other country, like a swallow, in a hired plane...though pigs can fly refers to cops...but they won't find them...no one will suspect her... this song's really dense, though, and the meaning is vague |
Kate Bush – All the Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, I pretty much agree; this song's about thanking your friends for being there, reminding them you love them every chance you can...because so many people wait until tragedies bring them together. We're all waiting for each other to make the first move. And we're not going to get anywhere if nobody has the courage to make that move! Amazing song...but Kate is simply magnificent, of course. |
Kate Bush – Leave It Open Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I believe this song is about how people usually only publically display certain sides of them, while everyone always has some deep, buried, weird tendencies. This song is basically an ode to letting that weirdness out of its "cage" and let it shine and blast. Pretty cool song. |
Kate Bush – Get Out of My House Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I love this song. A truly weird song to end Kate's arguably weirdest album. And yeah, it's based on The Shining. You've got to hear it to appreciate these lyrics, though this is true with most of Kate's songs. The best part is hearing Kate scream "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE"....bringing to mind Shelly Duvall's frantic insanity in the film The Shining. Hee-Hawwwww |
Kate Bush – The Kick Inside Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Well, either one of the above comments could be correct. Lici's idea is supported by: ---"I'll send your love to Zeus Oh, by the time you read this, I'll be well in touch" which pretty much undoubtedly means she'll be dead. She's killing herself. ---"This kicking here inside makes me leave you behind No more under the quilt to keep you warm Your sister I was born - you must lose me" To me, "your sister I was born" means that they are brother and sister...under the quilt means sexual relations...the kick inside can very well mean a baby. "You and me on the bobbing knee Didn't we cry at that old mythology he'd read" The bobbing knee is them when they were little and innocent on their father's knees, while he told them tales of a mythology, probably a Greek one, which explains why she'll give her love to Zeus and not the Christian God. So I think I agree more with Lici. The clues are all there, and this is something Kate would definitely write about. Though Maruree could be right too. Either way, beautiful song to end a beautiful album from a beautiful woman. |
Kate Bush – James and the Cold Gun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I could be wrong but: I think this is about a man (James) who leaves his town, where apparently an idolized man, to go to war with his "cold gun." He's supposed to be some sort of hero, but really all the townspeople want him back, because once he's gone, things start to turn awry and unruly without his authority and general rule. So even though he's supposed to be helping them out by fighting in a war for the, he's really only hurting them, as he becomes absent from their lives, which only go downhill. It seems that James enjoys being in the war, though, maybe because of the pure escape it provides him from real life (even though to most people fighting in a war would seem worse than facing day-to-day chores). The narrator accuses him of being a coward, running away from humanity and reality, and that it won't be funny anymore when the enemy kills him. So basically, he sells his soul and old life, in which he served as an authoritative figure and man of respect, in order to join a pointless war so he can escape all the routine of life, even though he'll only end up dead. War hurts life at home more than help it, because all of our manly, ruling figures are absent. Like I said, I could be completely wrong, but I think I'm somewhere along the right track... |
Kate Bush – Waking the Witch Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Obviously the protagonist of the 9th wave suite has now become exhausted after being stuck in the icy water for so long, and she begins to dream and hallucinate: here about going to confess to a priest but being mistakenly taken for a witch. Her confessions are sexually charged ("Listen to me come, baby: ohhh!") but the unsympathizing clergy and judge of this fictitious town won't have anything to do with it: they're evil in her eyes. Beyond the story of the 9th wave, this seems to be saying that in the most desperate of situations, we crave for people to accept us and see us for who we are, but they instead shun us and mistake us for something we definitely are not. Kate Bush is simply amazing. Of course, the little ending part with the helicopter and men shouting "Get out of the waves, get out of the water!" is a reference to her being rescued finally. The 9th Wave suite is constantly jumping from point to point in its story. This line is also a fore-echo from the second-to-last song on this album, Hello Earth. |
Kate Bush – And Dream of Sheep Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song begins the second half of the Hounds of Love album, which is subtitled "The 9th Wave." It turns out this a very complex song: The whole 9th Wave suite is about a woman, maybe Kate, maybe not, drowning out in an ocean and the hallucinations, experiences, and emotions that ensue. Apparently, the little light shining reference refers to the type of lifejacket with lights on them. A rescue crew finally comes to save the woman (why this is the opening track to the suite has always puzzled me, when this seems to be the end of the journey when she is rescued). The rescuers are in the water, their lifejackets shining on her face in the dark night, the woman utterly exhausted; she just wants to be weak and go to sleep. "If they find me racing white horses - They'll not take me for a buoy." This refers to the woman trying desperately to let herself be seen by racing white horses (or thrashing against the white-encrusted waves) so that the rescue crew won't "mistake me for a buoy." The rest is her just wanting to sleep forever as she is placed in the aircraft (plane? helicopter?). Like I said, this is the opener, but it's really the end of the 9th suite story. This song is followed by Under Ice, which appears to be when the woman first gets trapped in the water. |
Jewel – 1,000 Miles Away Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is incredibly beautiful; an amazing closer to her newest album. Wow...just heartbreakingly wonderful. The way she sings that last "oh god" brings me to tears... |
Jewel – Satellite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Babies on beach blankets headed for Mars Cute boys with crew cuts and day glow surfboards There's a pretty lady in a bikini, her eyes are bright But her teeth look like smashed out window panes She's trying to fix her dreams With sushi and facials and carrot juice CHORUS: There's a white wall that we can't see over now But that's okay, we're still learning Mistakes, they are allowed If you're a satellite, oh, oh, oh... Yoga classes so you can look good in your singles bar California's sure lovely; It's the home of the stars And everybody is a nice body But souls are like shadows, hollow inside, choked And hiding behind volley balls and valium and power bars CHORUS BRIDGE: We understand a lot of things About modern techonology But not about dreams Our hearts are on the shelves We can't fix ourselves But we can fix a satellite Because in Hollywood The heroes are strung out on grace And half-skinned gypsies are crying to leave this place The pope can't fix my broken heart Rock 'n' roll can't fix my broken heart Valium can't fix my broken heart Miss Cleo can't fix my broken heart But will you fix my broken heart? Cause I'm gonna give you a satellite Fix my broken heart |
Jewel – Satellite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
these lyrics are all messed up... |
Jewel – Goodbye Alice in Wonderland Lyrics | 18 years ago |
One of the best songs on the new album. I think the meaning is pretty self-explanatory. It's about growing up, coming to terms with reality and learning the difference between dreaming (a good, healthy thing) and pretending (harmful, denying the trut). Seems to be mostly an autobiographical song... Beautiful, as usual, Miss Kilcher... |
KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See Lyrics | 18 years ago |
My least favorite track on the album. Way too poppy for my liking. If you've only heard this song on the radio and haven't yet listened to any of Tunstall's other stuff, I recommend giving her a try. The rest of the album is amazing. |
KT Tunstall – Miniature Disasters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I can't believe no one has commented on this song. This and Universe & U are my favorite tracks, but hell, I love them all (with the slight exception of Suddenly I See). I really think the basis of this song is that just the little things that fall through in life can sometimes culminate into a pressure unbearable, which "bring me to my knees." I also think it has to do with learning to tame your impatience with life and becoming ultimately a more realized person who can learn to cope with life without panicking into a bedlam. |
Blondie – Maria Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The chorus is damn hard to get out of your head. |
Blondie – Sunday Girl Lyrics | 18 years ago |
*sigh* I love it when Debbie sings in French. |
Blondie – Rapture Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Blondie is great. Definitely a drug song...though there is some meaning in all the seemingly "nonsensical" words. |
The Polyphonic Spree – Section 8 (Soldier Girl) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I really think this song is just about finding love in general, someone who is willing to love you unconditionally (hence the soldier aspect of it). I'm a huge fan of The Polyphonic Spree. They have gotten me through so much...I would love to see them live! |
