I think she's refering to how people talk when on reefer. The stereotypical stoner philosopher.

Kittie – Brackish Lyrics 17 years ago
Has anyone seen the FLCL video for this song? The theme of that is 'Don't trust older women'. In FLCL the woman is the strong one. It goes with the song title, too, because she is definately Brackish.... Had to mention it.

It's never too late to learn to swing. Just watch swing kids and jump into a group lesson. Most major cities have some kind of swing scene.

John Mayer – Daughters Lyrics 17 years ago
While I agree this song got completely overplayed and blown way bigger than it should be. I think it's worth noticing that the major complaints of this song are emotional, calling it overplayed, mysoginsitic, and overly-sentimental.

The truth of the matter is, ANYONE is more stable, open to new relationships and well-adjusted when both their parents are good to them and a part of their life. So taking one out leads to a broken person. It is a well known fact that the father-daughter and father-son relationship are different and the child deals with them differently shows in expressions like: "Every good cowboy has Daddy issues." and "Never date a girl with Daddy issues."

John's taking the high road and saying on behalf of the guys who later in life will have these girls with daddy issues in their life either as friends or as girlfriends.

She Wants Revenge – Broken Promises For Broken Hearts Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the promise is that you'd never let yourself in the same position again, but that promise is broken when the two of you get back together.

Taking Back Sunday – Little Devotional Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about the girl cheating. The girl is with the singer, her current guy, just being together, trying on clothes, etc. He knows she's been cheating with New Guy. She asks which dress do you like, he answers 'You know you were always such a lady I've always been impressed . . . . . Well I picture you in blue, but I have to say I'm more partial to the red' He lays her the complement instead of confronting her on where she'd been

The singer is trying to be a gentleman about the whole thing by not asking: 'Do you think he'd be better at doing what I do best?' So he's saying, he'll stay quiet and watch her and New Guy. He's asking her to continue to be a lady and pay attention to how he IS treating her and how New Guy treats her. He's trying to do all this without prying and being a jerk and trying to be too needy.

That's all going on on the outside. Inside "I said I'm gonna have myself in shambles, before your folks are up and lookin' for some answers" This makes me think that the 'folks' liked him and thought the relationship was good, and if he breaks down they'll be worried. Maybe one of the things he does best is help her deal with them.

Just my $0.02. TBS == better than bad

Streetlight Manifesto – Day In, Day Out Lyrics 17 years ago
Before I get to the meaning, wasn't the point of the Keasbey re-release to clear-up and produce the original album?

Anyways, I think this song refers to how loser guys and girls go and whine to each other about their lives instead of moving forward and making their own futures.

I like how he includes the word 'hark' in a punk song.

I'm pretty sure this song means buy another round of Guiness.

Built to Spill – Joyride Lyrics 18 years ago
No one mentioned the best line in the song, 'I screwed her and she screwed me, we never once had sex'.

This whole song is cynical, and live to the fullest, forget the crap and move on.

I still like it.

Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Whoa, this song is the first . . . . anything i've ever just read and immediately teared up. the lines: "fuck buying flowers for graves . . . . do anything" hit me in the chest. My best friend killed himself 3 years ago, and now some of my other friends are stuck in a rut. I'm not worried about them killing theirselves, but the "i'll start the engine . . . . bathe and hunt" lines describe the tug that you feel waiting for them to move on.

Streetlight plays tomorrow at HoB. I'll be in the skank pit, doin' my thing.

Fugazi – Break Lyrics 18 years ago
Even though this song has few lyrics I think it is about living for the moment.

I'm pretty sure the lyrics are:
Can't ask for more so we overfill
We take apart everything we build
Had it right here, now it's gone
On and on . . . .
Break

That rhymes, and it has a live to the fullest before you burn out feel to it.

Funeral for a Friend – Escape Artists Never Die Lyrics 18 years ago
Hello, my name is Sam. I am an escape artist. I can tell you why escape artists never die. We escape from everything that is living life. We can walk away from anything because we're already dead.

Agreeing with punkrockrincess, this song is saying that Matt isn't an escape artist, but sometimes wishes he was.

This song is the perfect driving away from drama song. Not that you can escape, but you're driving home for the night. It always sounds to me like he slips in a 'conversation's hell' towards the end. The feel of the song is like Information Travels Faster by Death Cab for Cutie.

Sweet! I'm the first guy to comment on this one! (Unless some of you chicks are dudes saying you're chicks. . . . . .)

Anywho, I think this songs stretches past school into life in general. I wish I could have a Snow Day and just stay at home, but once you get out of school you have to keep going and can't avoid the daily drudgery.

Motorcycle – as the rush comes Lyrics 18 years ago
The girl's voice makes it seem like she's asking to be protected from 'the rush'. Maybe not protected, but just feel close to someone as she rides it out. Like she can face the world from the arms of her lover.

I love the line:
"See, I'm stuck in a city

I'm not sure what it really means, but whatever it means, I agree. I also agree that this sounds like Queens of the Stone Age.

Jack's Mannequin – The Mixed Tape Lyrics 18 years ago
I have to comment on the gf->enemy thing. So after spending all this time in the relationship, you get close and something happens that splits you. It doesn't have to be one thing you can point to, maybe you grew apart. Now when people talk about how similar the two of you are you don't want to hear it because it hurts. You know that some difference is big enough to split you up.

Then he has the line:
You said you meant it
there's a piece of me
in every single second of every single day

She still thinks of you, and you her, which is shown in the lines:
It's when I spend the most time
Thinking 'bout what I've given up
. . . . .
when you start the day
just to close the curtains
you're thinking 'bout what I've given up

Whatever it is that was given up ended it all. Then the last lines
I'm cutting through you track by track
I swear to God this mix could sink the sun
But it was you I was thinking of

These lines make me think that the mix isn't for her as in to be given to her. It is for her like a dirge or an epitaph. It covers that part of your life that was hers. A story to tell the children about a love that was, but isnt.

This song is so powerful. It's like I wrote every note with my own finger.

Pearl Jam – Indifference Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe this song is about the battles in life that cannot be won, but must be fought. Whether it's a quest for justice, the environment, against poverty, for tolerance, love, whatever. This song is about picking your battle, and letting the fight define you. You know you can't win, but that doesn't matter. The fight is so precious, whatever it is, that you must fight.

No Doubt – Stricken Lyrics 18 years ago
First off, love the song. Second, does it seem like the love is unrequited or maybe the boy is abusive? This song has a sad helplessness to it. It's like the love is so much that it dominates the rest of her life and takes her somewhere she doesn't really want to go.

In the end, love wins.

I hear out of this song that we have to take control of our lives. We hear on TV that this or that is genetic, and this person is that way because they were raised like that. But NO

What a title track.

Pearl Jam – All or None Lyrics 18 years ago
This song seems to follow Pearl Jam's fixation with troubled families. One family member is trying to fix things, but they keep spinning out of control. The other members don't see the problem. The situation seems so hopeless and he's been fighting for so long, he doesn't even know what he's working towards anymore.

The selfless confession is when he tries to open up to the rest of his family, but it's so painful that it leads back to more fighting. To him, no matter how hard he tries or works things end up in the same place.

All these things going on destroy his self-worth. If he can't get along with his family, what good is he? His struggle is internal, so only he knows he has given up.

Franz Ferdinand – Jacqueline Lyrics 18 years ago
This song makes me feel all smooth and charming.
Scene: Library

Jacqueline was 17 working on a desk
When Ivor peered above a spectacle,
forgot that he had wrecked a girl

Jacqueline is studying. Ivor is at another desk, he notices Jacqueline. She is HOT. Now Ivor is a bit of a player, he had wrecked a girl by breaking her heart. He doesn't want to do it again, but he approaches Jacqueline anyway.

Sometimes these eyes
......
How in the return of the gaze,
she can return you the face
that you are staring from.

Now Ivor puts on his charming smile and Jacqueline sees him and smiles back.

Then the song changes and the girls dance.

Franz Ferdinand – Walk Away Lyrics 18 years ago
First the obligatory lyrical correction. The first line starts:
I swapped my innocence for pride
crushed the end within my stride
said "I'm strong now I know that I'm a leaver"
Alex cuts off the beginning in the demo and the live version on the DualDisc, but above are the lyrics from the jacket.

I'm going to comment my favorite part of the song. Namely the lines "I cannot turn and see those eyes as apologies may rise/ I must be strong, stay an unbeliever" I can picture the conversation as he breaks up with a girl when thing weren't working. It wasn't a fight. She didn't cheat on him. It was time to move on.

That's why he says he must love the sound of her walking away, because it's easy to cling to a comfortable old relationship. But no, he is a leaver. He will not settle. Yet and still, until that better love is found, the world is upside-down.

Jack's Mannequin – Bruised Lyrics 18 years ago
First off, awesome song. To me it seems sad, like he went on vacation with a girl and while they were away she broke up with him. Maybe not that harsh, but for some reason once the plane lands they can no longer be as close, and he knows it.

Maybe they were fighting while on vacation, he doesn't want her to leave, and that's why he's bruised. Either way, the plane ride is the end of their time together.

-OR-
He's stuck in a relationship with a girl who doesn't want him to be away. This explains the 'hours pass, she still counts the minutes'. Everyone says they make a good couple, but for him everything is falling apart. He's bruised from fighting for his space. The plane ride is peaceful because she can't try to reach him on his cell phone and he can enjoy the solitude.

I'm not certain on either of those, but that's what I get from the song. What do you think?

Alkaline Trio – I Lied My Face Off Lyrics 18 years ago
This might be a stretch, but this is my gut feeling about this song. I don't know if Dan was ever into fantasy stuff, but Vampires and other undead had no reflection. They are also cursed with immortality.

Think of Groundhog's Day. That's the curse. He has already lived his life once, and the scars from his old life, with this girl, are a part of him forever now. That is also why he says he'll stay down next time I get hit by a train. He CAN get up, but he doesn't want to. He misses this girl, and says he'll be okay, but he keeps living on without a soul and purpose.

Like I said it may be too deep. That's just where it takes me. Awesome song. I hope they play it next week when we go see Alk3.

Death Cab for Cutie – Information Travels Faster Lyrics 18 years ago
Interesting interpretation, bugout.

I think Ben's talking about a girl he met at a party or something and she's all excited about him, but he isn't interested. She blurs with the other girls he met. Even the conversation was just a boxer's bob and weave. To me this song makes more sense after listening to Tiny Vessels and Expo '86. Ben has found another empty relationship and he doesn't want to get involved.

Death Cab for Cutie – Soul Meets Body Lyrics 18 years ago
First the obligatory lyrics comment. The liner notes say 'Roads left in both of our shoes'.

That said, I agree with suchprettywords. This song is about the feeling when you know you belong where you are. When you think about what you are doing now and your life as it is instead of having thoughts and dreams that have nothing to do with your life as it is.

I think he's saying he wants to be completely absorbed in the moment. "And let the sun wrap its arms around me". It sounds like he's so lost in thought most of the time that he can't enjoy the simple stuff life's made of.

IMHO Plans is laid-back night music.

Jack Johnson – Flake Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this song because it's easy to play and sing at the same time, but whenever I play it I have to try not to cry during the second verse 'I know she usually has some other ties'

It makes me think of a person you feel so strongly about that you would build your world around her, but she won't do the same for you. She want to be close, but she keeps her other ties which break you apart. You know what's going on, but you care to much to force her to break her ties.

Then the chorus comes back with 'so don't tell me/ you might just let me go'. She won't let go and she won't break her other ties, so you lie and say it's all right, maybe next time.

Weezer – Only in Dreams Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with 21Pink. It was that video that got me into Weezer. That's the best music video I've ever seen in my life. My friends and I all the build-up at the end the death and ressurection of Only in Dreams. Whenever that part comes on the coversation stops and we all look out the car windows or just get lost in thought. I don't think it is possible to play another song after this. We just sit in silence. Rock, rock on =w=
