I think that this song is quite humble particularly with the title "You Were Right". In it he suggests that he has been wallowing about not achieving things in life in the way he hoped and his poor girlfriend has got really fed up with how pointless his misery seems. Anyhow, it seems that she has now made him see sense and that the most important thing in his life is being with her. He now realises that he wants to be happy and build a good life with her.
In other words, he is suggesting that this is what true love's about, having someone to help keep you down to earth and, of course, appreciating each other. I played this song a lot leading up to my wedding as it was particularly meaningful to me then. |

I've never been able to make up my mind if this song is about a happy, healthy relationship or about being in love with someone who drives you crazy.
As with all songs, it's open to each individuals intrepretation, so I decided to look at the more positive meaning as a song to play during my wedding ceremony.
When my husband and I met Ed Harcourt prior to starting one of his gigs earlier this year, we told him that we played this song at our wedding, and he decided to add this song to his setlist especially for us. Meeting Ed Harcourt and having this song played on our behalf made the gig really special. He's absolutely brilliant! |

In my opinion, this song is about the early stages of a relationship with someone really special and how being with your soulmate makes you feel that you can deal with anything that life throws you.
This song is amongst the best I've ever heard. I seen Ed Harcourt live a few months back and he's vastly underated. I'm almost sure that he's going be one of these artists that becomes big years down the line when people finally realise how talented he is. |
