This is by far the BEST song on Chapter V. Awesome guitar in the intro and verses, incredible chorus, and I love how the last two minutes are stringed together and flow.
My interpretation is that he is being used and expected to be something he's not (miserable skin) by someone who is trying to control him. He went along with it at first (swallowed your answers, swallowed my pride), but now he is begging that person to Please stop controlling and using him. The last verse means that only way for him to be free is to hurt himself more than his repressor (“Don't cut off your nose to spite your face”). |

Seems to be a song about someone who is completely dishonest and untrustworthy, and how it all catches up with them. I also heard that it correlates with a Bible verse, a parobole I think. |

I think this song is about his feeling towards a controlling person. He is reluctantly loyal even though they are just taking advantage of him. This song could be taken more generally than this, and I'm wondering about the allusion to the Bible when Jesus carries his cross that he would eventually die on.
This song has one of the better choruses on the album. Great song. |

That guitar sounds freakin sweet and the intro is awesome! He is talking about low self security; not trying cuz ure afraid of failing, and how it keeps him from doing anything he wants to. This is one of the heaviest songs on Chapter V. There's more to this song, but I can't put my finger on it... |

Finally a song as catchy and emotionally deep as "Outside" and "It's Been Awhile". I've only heard two songs from the album (both on the site), and I hope Chapter V will be as good as Break the Cycle.
My take is that this song is about marriage... one that actually lasts. He is committed to staying together even though they both have shortcomings, and will wait for her if she leaves him.
I think this song illustrates an effective relationship well. People break up or divorce for the stupidest reasons, and they don't always "find the words to keep their spouse (or whoever) right there waiting".

I think this song is about how the individual goes outside everyday into the toxic atmoshere of society, and is slowly mutated my it's corruption. The individual is led around by the media's BS, and whoever will sell them something to "fix thier day".
"Edges slowly fray" means that after a while, the toxic atmoshere of society will become the new standard, instead of reality. This song gives me images of a future where the whole world is like Vegas, except with no moral boundaries whatsoever, and no one knowing any better.
i'm glad aaron put this song out there where the people who need to hear it can hear it.

This is by far my favorite song by my favorite Christian artist(s). Everytime i listen to it, i get all choked up. when i was younger, i always thought, i'm glad that stuff only happens in movies, no one could ever be that cruel, and life can't be that sad...
The scary part is, Toby, Mike, and Kevin didn't call the song "What Have THEY Become". None of us are perfect, and we all fall into this category of a slipping society.

saroknight is dead on the money about this song and blow away. blow away has the coolest intro and outro of any song i've heard this decade, and this song builds on itself in so many ways. not only does the bridge flow perfectly and poetically, it helps the song build on itself to it's ending glory, and reinforce the powerful meaning. Pure genius the way this song reaches into my mind.

To me, this song represents my feelings for my dad. He always treated me, and my younger sisters like shit; as if we were genetic failures not worthy of his love or even attention. Now i'm 20, and still at home so i can afford college. We talk once a week for six minutes while he bitches at me for studying for class instead of scrubbing his house, trying to intimidate me and make me fell like crap like he used to do. As i got older, all that fear i had growing up has turned to hate and rage. but as the song says "Now I'm older and I feel like I could let some of this anger fade". but the next verse could mean that in doing that, he would be admiting defeat and only failing himself.
To me, the character in this song is like me. He has all this repressed anger, and can't do anything with it. And we all know what happens to bottled up anger... |
