|I'm in no way trying to say this is what the song is certainly about, but when I read the lyrics I immediately thought of Reznor's break with major labels, and coming back to Columbia with the recent How to Destroy Angels release and this new NIN album. He's seen both worlds, and he's come back to the label, even though it may not be everything he wants, its a necessary evil? Just a thought, I really have no bias as far as music labels go.|

Psomion, I took that "rock them" part as meaning "rock your babies to sleep."
"Sleep pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby;
Rock them, rock them, lullaby."
It made sense to me, in context.

Yes, it seems that this song was based on The Odyssey.
As far as the "where the sky loves the sea" line, I took that as merely referring to the horizon and the call of touching the "distant beaches."
Then there's the line: "And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body, Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind." I've always heard that for each new piece of information your brain retains, a new wrinkle is formed. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but with that in mind it seemed to me that Aphrodite here "drowns you in her body" or makes love to this man and while doing so it is ultimately becoming a memory that will stay with him forever.
And of course Aphrodite is the goddess of love, who when she was born rose naked from the sea atop a scallop shell. "and she rides a crimson shell"

At first, I must say, I did not enjoy this song at all. Then I started listening to the lyrics.
It seems to me that the song is talking about a man who feels the need to take on everyone else's problems and make them his own. He doesn't like it, but it's just how he's made.
It might be just how I'm feeling right now, but I immediately identified with this song. Lately I've felt the need to be there for these people in my life that have so many problems; I feel the need to make each person's life better, as if I can somehow affect the outcome of their situation no matter how large and untouchable it may be. The lines talking about these things accumulating behind him, picking up feelings for him to feed upon... totally make sense to me.
