Coldplay – The Escapist Lyrics 16 years ago
Remind anyone else of this?

"And in the end,
the love you take
is equal to the love you make"

Chris Martin also stated in an interview that Violet Hill is a street near Abbey Road, so... more parallels.

Imogen Heap – Leave Me to Love Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that line is a reference to the "Baa Baa Black Sheep" rhyme:

"Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full:
One for the master,
One for the dame,
and one for the little boy who lives down the lane."

As for what they have three hundred bags of, I guess drugs makes sense, or money...

Barry Manilow – Read 'Em And Weep Lyrics 17 years ago
Amazing breakup song; includes so many of the emotions that go along with it...regret, missing, relief, triumph, uncertainty... This is one of my favorite Barry Manilow songs. Pretty self-explanatory as far as meaning goes.

Michael Penn – Walter Reed Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you're right but it seems like there's another level to it too. According to Wikipedia, Grauman's Chinese is "a world-famous movie theatre located at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California." It also says, "The song 'Walter Reed' from the album Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947 by Michael Penn contains the lyrics, 'I've had my fill of palm trees and lighting up Grauman's Chinese. Tell me now what more do you need, take me to Walter Reed tonight' The contrast presented by these lines suggests that the song title refers not to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, but instead to the Walter Reade Theater in New York City."

From this it seems like it's about someone leaving LA for NYC and comparing it to giving up the battle, with the pun on Walter Reed.

Counting Crows – Hazy Lyrics 17 years ago
what Adam says on the website:

"I got an email from Lisa asking me for the lyrics to "Hazy", which, as you may or may not have heard, is the previously unreleased song written by Gemma Hayes and myself which appears on the live album "*New Amsterdam-Live at Heineken Music Hall".

Unfortunately, the truth is I honestly have no idea what they are. I never wrote them down. Gemma and I created the song a week earlier drunk out of our minds around 5am at a piano in a bar. By the time we played the Amsterdam shows, she had left the tour. I had lost my mind, and I couldn't stop thinking about her (Elvis had also presumably left the building). I was just sitting at the piano in the Heineken Hall getting ready to play "A Long December" and I started trying to remember the music to "Hazy" and making up the rest as I went along. It's all stream of consciousness. I wrote it and sang it off the top of my head. It's just me trying to express exactly how I felt at that moment. I couldn't play it now if I tried. I saw Gemma in New York about a year ago and I played it for her. We tried to work out the chords but neither of us could figure out how to play it.

So it's just a moment. It exists there on that tape and nowhere else. That's kind of why I included it. It's the quintessential bootleg moment."

Simon and Garfunkel – All Around The World Or The Myth Of Fingerprints Lyrics 19 years ago
Every time I hear that line "Ever since the watermelon" I just start cracking up... Other people can probably interpret this song better than I, but since none of them have yet, I'll just say that the "myth of fingerprints" seems to be referring to the belief that they're all unique, that no two people have the same fingerprints... but it's just a myth, because in the end what difference is there, really, between all the people in the world? It's kind of about... the pointlessness and repetition of it all.

Simon and Garfunkel – Song For The Asking Lyrics 19 years ago
This is such a sweet, simple tune that it's exactly what it says it is in the lyrics. "I've been waiting all my life..." To me it's a song of awakening after a period of darkness. I think the last line is my favourite... It all makes me feel so happy :~)

Simply and completely gorgeous. One of my favourite songs ever. The translation is listed separately under "The Calm Evening Sea"--that says it all.

Barenaked Ladies – The Old Apartment Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with JackFrost--I definitely got the feeling from that line that there was something wrong in their relationship. He never says he loves her in return--and is "Her body keeps me warm" something a person normally says about their lover? It seems a little strange, to say the least, that that's the best thing he has to say for her. It sort of comes off as him trying to convince himself that he's happy, rather than a true expression of the way his life really is.

Ben Jelen – She'll Hear You Lyrics 19 years ago
I think I read somewhere that he wrote this song about his ex-girlfriend, who was living in England while he was in the US--so it's about a long-distance relationship. I love the first two stanzas because they're not necessarily about a romantic relationship but could be just about the passage of time in general, about the people we lose touch with and the one's we've left behind...

Ben Jelen – Wicked Little Town Lyrics 19 years ago
First of all let me point out that this song is from the movie "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," which I've never seen but I've heard it's pretty good.
Basically I think he's singing to someone who's in a bad place (geographically or a metaphorical place in life) and they're having to deal with a lot of stuff right now and possibly getting caught up in some bad things themself, and he's just saying, "Look, hang in there and you can get through it. I'm here for you if you need me."
I especially like the references to "Lady Luck," the Fates, and Lot's wife from the Bible who was turned into a pillar of salt. Just a cool song.

Barenaked Ladies – I'll Be That Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, especially the imagery in the chorus which starts out pleasant and gets very dark...

I also found an interview with BNL in which they said the song was written about autoerotic asphyxiation. It makes sense when you listen to it in that context. I have to admit that when I first listened to it I also subscribed to the lesbian theory, and I think I still like that reading better... The gay man thing is interesting too... But that's the great thing about songs, isn't it? That they can mean something different to each person who listens.

Enya – Storms In Africa II Lyrics 19 years ago
Love the storm sounds in the beginning of this version, and especially the verse when the other instruments drop out. The English as opposed to Gaelic doesn't make much difference to me.

Enya – One By One Lyrics 19 years ago
My favourite part of this is when she sings, "One by one my leaves fall, One by one my tales are told," which seems to have been omitted here. I don't think it's a song with a really deep meaning, but I like that line because it evokes a lot of things... like the passage of time... aging... experiences we'll never have again... story-telling... I really just like the image of trees representing people.

Josh Groban – All'improvviso Amore Lyrics 19 years ago
Love this song! It's a love song for those who haven't necessarily found "true love" yet--it's a song of hope for a love that's going to come along. Here's the English, more or less, though of course the Italian sounds better:

The wind that blows softly
Tonight changes my destiny
And I feel that the heart can still surprise itself
Life now has more meaning
If I watch this immense sky
And the enamoured moon will illuminate me
And it will be...

Suddenly love, like the sea
Invades my heart and my soul and it will save me
And it will be natural like breathing
The air in me will speak to me of you.

Now everything is different
I breathe you in the universe
Your eyes are two stars in the darkness

Suddenly love, like the sea
Invades my heart and my soul and it will save me
And it will be natural, like breathing
And it will be true love, that will heal the heart
Light within me will be born.

Josh Groban – Gira Con Me Questa Notte Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is very beautiful, and for some reason it's the first Josh song I bothered translating... I like all the imagery with the idea of turning, applying it to the earth, to his life, to hearts... It's cool. Anywho, here it is in English, pretty literally:

The world turns with me tonight
small steps that I make with you
I follow your heart and I follow the moon,
So hidden far from me.

The world turns with us tonight
Ah, if only far from here existed
A place where to discover my heart,
To know if it can love you or not.

And it will turn and it will turn
my heart together with you
And the earth will turn and my life will turn
and one day, yes, it will understand.

It's you who turns with me tonight
It's you who turns far from here
But I know that you are my moon
Something you show, something you don't.

There are blue streets in the sky
There are eyes, and the sky is already there
Yes, I believe they are the stars
Ah, if I could stop myself like this...

And it will turn and it will turn
my heart together with you
And the earth will turn and my life will turn
and one day, yes, it will understand.

Heart already far away
Yes, you are the moon
If only I could discover it in the sky...

And it will turn and it will turn
Yes it will turn, this heart of mine
And the earth will turn and my life will turn
and one day, yes, it will understand
and one day, yes, it will understand you.

Josh Groban – Cinema Paradiso (Se) Lyrics 19 years ago
What an absolutely gorgeous love song. Josh sings it with such emotion that it's stunning... The music was written by Ennio Morricone, an Italian composer, and is the love theme from the movie Cinema Paradiso, which I saw in my Italian class and loved. This is the melody that plays in the romantic scenes with Toto (Salvatore) and Elena. The lyrics are so beautiful (and keep in mind this is fairly literal):

If you were in my eyes for a day
you would see the beauty that, full of joy,
I find within your eyes
I don't know if it's magic or reality...

If you were in my heart for a day
you would be able to have an idea
of what I feel
when you hold me strongly to you,
and chest to chest, we
breathe together.

Protagonist of your love
I don't know if it's magic
or reality...

If you were in my soul for a day
you would know what I feel within me
that I fell in love
from that instant together with you,
And what I sense is
only love.

Italian lyrics, with a few corrections:

Se tu fossi nei miei occhi per un giorno
Vedresti la bellezza che piena d’allegria
Io trovo dentro gli occhi tuoi
Ignaro se è magia o realtà...

Se tu fossi nel mio cuore per un giorno
Potreste avere un’idea
Di ciò che sento io
Quando mi abbracci forte a te
E petto a petto, noi
Respiriamo insieme.

Protagonista del tuo amor
Non so se sia magia
O realtà...

Se tu fossi nella mia anima un giorno
Sapresti cosa sento in me
Che m’innamorai
Da quell’istante insieme a te
E ciò che provo è
Solamente amore.

Josh Groban – Oceano Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's the translation I ganked from some site:

It rains on the Ocean
It rains on the Ocean
It rains on my identity

Lights on the Ocean
Lights on the Ocean
Gaps of luminosity

Maybe there in America
the winds of the Pacific
Uncover its immensity

My hands hold tight
some faraway dreams
And my thoughts run to you

I row, I shake, I feel
Deep dark abysses

It's for the love I give you
and for the love you don't know
that makes me wreck
It's for the love I don't have
and for the love I'd want
It's for this pain
It's for this love I have for you
That makes me get over those real storms

Waves on the Ocean
Waves on the Ocean
that will gently calm down

My hands hold tight
some faraway dreams
and your breath blows on me

I row, I shake, I feel
A wind around my heart

It's for the love I have for you
That makes me get over thousands of storms
It's for the love I give you
and for the love I'd want
from this sea
It's for the life that isn't there
that makes me wreck
deep in my heart
All this will have you
and to you everything will seem normal

The lyrics are kind of obscure, but the way I read it is that it's about a man who is leaving his home (Italy?) and going to America, and he is separated from his love. Nice imagery connecting the ocean and relationships... It also seems like perhaps the person he loves does not return the love he shows the way he wishes, which is something most of us can probably relate to.

Josh Groban – Alla Luce Del Sole Lyrics 19 years ago
This is an amazing, powerful song. I actually have some of the lyrics hanging on my wall. My favourite line has to be when he sings "Il silenzio morirà, la gente che c'è si confonderà." To me, it's basically about hope for the future. Of course it is a love song too ("Where are you? Where is your smile? Without you, without your love, what will become of me?" ... "at the light of that sun, I'll continue to search for you."). More than that, though, I like to listen to it when my optimism is slipping. It has a lot of images that can be taken to mean something along the lines of, "Yes, things right now are pretty bad, but everything will get better with the light of the sun..." Literally, "This night will pass, the darkness that is there will dissolve." However disillusioned we may be with our lives or the world in general, there is always hope that things will someday improve, and in the meantime we'll continue to search...

La Oreja De Van Gogh – El 28 Lyrics 19 years ago
I played this song last year for my AP Spanish classmates and they liked it. Also found it was a fun one to crank up in my car after school let out... Anyway. Basically I think it's about a girl who's remembering an experience with a past love--presumably the 28th was a significant date as regards the experience, since today is the 28th of some unspecified month which sparks her reminiscence. In case anyone's interested, I'll (somewhat inexpertly) put it in English:

The 28th arrives late and nervously I look at my
watch.
The rain with me begins a day of perfect sun. (1)
In the distance the memory of a love appears,
it doesn't see me walking absently, it happened
long ago.

...and I began to remember.

And I walked through my mind and I found
that corner that I left to you,
where I keep the moments that I did not forget.

I relive(2) that night when we forgot the rest [of the
world],
the sky turned red,
we saw the sun yawn.
It has lost itself among the people and I have lost
myself as well.
The 28th has already left, the memory of a
yesterday.

...and I began to remember.

And I walked through my mind and I found
that corner that I left to you,
where I keep the moments that I did not forget.

Yes, I want to know if you also
remember something of that café;
I hope(3) at times without understanding why...

And I walked through my mind and I found
that corner that I left to you,
where I keep the moments that I did not forget.

(1) My best guess is that she is saying that although it's a perfectly sunny day, for her it is raining.
(2) also, "revive memories of"
(3) also, "wait"

La Oreja De Van Gogh – Soñaré Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to say this is my favourite song on LODVG's first cd. The message has to do with dreaming, which of course is one of my favourite pastimes. Here goes with the lyrics (please pardon minor inaccuracies):

I have always dreamed with the power to fly,
to spread(1) my arms and not to land,
getting to know other places
and truths further on.
And to sit on a cloud to rest,
to drink of this freedom
and let it carry me,
la la ra la.

I have always dreamed with the power to sleep
on a bed of algae and coral,
to enjoy that silence
that always reigns there.
And to travel on top of a dolphin,
to cross seas without stopping,
and never to arrive at the end,
la la ra la.

As that genius said,
this life is a dream, a dream,
as that genius said,
this life is a dream, and dream I will.

I have always dreamed with the power to create
a time machine and discover
the far-away future,
where I'm not going to be.
And to be able to return to San Sebastián(2),
in the 26th century
in a space ship,
la la ra la.
I have dreamed so that you may be able to dream,
so that you may draw in your mind a place
where there are neither mysteries
nor secrets nor evil.
And to find one day upon waking up,
that now(3) nothing goes(4) the same,
that everything may return to begin again,
la la ra la.

As that genius said,
this life is a dream, a dream,
as that genius said,
this life is a dream, and dream I will...

(1) also "unfurl"
(2) Saint Sebastian; the name of the Spanish city where the band started.
(3) also "already"
(4) also "follows" or "continues"

La Oreja De Van Gogh – Dile Al Sol Lyrics 19 years ago
I first heard of this group when I was in Spain last year, but I didn't really get into them until I was back in the states. I like this song quite a bit; it's really telling the story of a young woman whose lover goes off to war and dies there--it goes on to describe what she goes through afterward. I'm no translation expert but the chorus goes something like this: "Return to me and give me your hand on leaving. Return to me and watch my eyes cry. Tell the sun to make your warmth fly toward our home so that you return to me." And the bridge is: "Where you are love, where you sleep today, give me that kiss, that told me goodbye, that told me goodbye..." It's catchy yet sad.
