Gogol Bordello – Start Wearing Purple Lyrics 13 years ago
I reckon 'Diogenis' is actually Diogenes, as in Diogenes the Cynic, the wonderful Greek philosopher and exhibitionist.

Defiance, Ohio – Grandma Song Lyrics 13 years ago
The correct lyrics are:

"And how are you feeling? All the white in these hospital walls can't quite wash out your tired weak eyes."

Dressy Bessy – If You Should Try To Kiss Her Lyrics 13 years ago
I think "draw back the curtain" is actually "draw back your bow", with the person filling the role of Cupid.

Immortal Technique – No Mercy Lyrics 13 years ago
It's Margaret Thatcher, not Datcher. Former UK Prime Minister and horrible, horrible human being.

Oi Polloi – Sell-Out Lyrics 13 years ago
It's clearly about folk 'selling out' and going against all the values they used to hold.

Oi Polloi – Mindrot Lyrics 13 years ago
Fae Wikipedia:

"'Bread and circuses' is a phrase that can criticize either government policies to pacify the citizenry, or the shallow, decadent desires of that same citizenry. In both cases, it refers to low-cost, low-quality, high-availability food and entertainment that have become the sole concern of the People, to the exclusion of matters that some consider more important: e.g. the Arts, public works projects, human rights, or democracy itself. The phrase is commonly used to refer to short-term government palliatives offered in place of a solution for significant, long-term problems"

Oi Polloi – Willie McRae Lyrics 13 years ago
More on Willie McRae's murder here:

Oi Polloi – The Right To Choose Lyrics 13 years ago
There's also a wee bit that goes:

"Abortion clinics bombed, medical staff shot and murdered - a sinister campaign of right-wing terror. We're not just talking about a bunch of religious fanatics trying to impose their views on everyone else - the issue of abortion affects us all as it is the doorway through which many people are brought to the broader reactionary agenda of the new right. SPUC, Operation Rescue, the BNP - make no mistake about it - unless we take on the nutters and fight we'll lose the right to choose"

Babyshambles – Lost Art of Murder Lyrics 13 years ago
"You said too much, you been too unkind"

A reference to The Cure's Boys Don't Cry perhaps? "But I know that this time I have said too much, been too unkind"...

Pete seems an unlikely fan but considering how similar the start of There She Goes is to The Lovecats, it isn't a huge jump.

Arcade Fire – Alligator Mine Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm sure the line is actually "You breathe like air's a tourist in your lungs".

Buzzcocks – Everybody's Happy Nowadays Lyrics 13 years ago
In case anyone is wondering, 'Le Meilleur des mondes' is the French version of Huxley's 'Brave New World'.

The Organ – Can You Tell Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm pretty sure the first line is "I skateboard to your house in Fall", as in autumn. Would make more sense I think and it would also rhyme more with the second line.

Great song. :)

The Long Blondes – Big Infatuation Lyrics 13 years ago
Instead of 'lighters of my thighs' I think it's "ladders up my thighs", referring to her tights being laddered.

Propagandhi – Nailing Descartes to the Wall/(Liquid) Meat Is Still Murder Lyrics 13 years ago
The full title of this song is 'Nailing Descartes to the Wall/(Liquid) Meat Is Still Murder'.

Rene Descartes was a 17th century philosopher who postulated that animals are merely biological machines who cannot suffer or feel pain, and that any reaction they might have is purely mechanical. Descartes is at least partly responsible for the prevalence of this view at at the time. As a result vivisection was carried out without anaesthetic for many years, and indeed is still carried out today.

The Organ – Let the Bells Ring Lyrics 13 years ago
According to The Organ's website, the line is "I treat myself... so I treat more", not "I dream of death". And then "I take a sword in my hand", although it does sound more like 'hold'. It should also be "When I spin touching you's less of a chore".

This song's really beautiful.

Belle & Sebastian – A Century of Elvis Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the "Prior's Road" that the above poster mentions is more likely Byres Road. It's a popular road in Glasgow, Belle and Sebastian's hometown.

Belle & Sebastian – Like Dylan in the Movies Lyrics 15 years ago
Apparently, this song was written after a bout of paranoia suffered by Stuart Murdoch when walking through Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow.

Morrissey – Skin Storm Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a cover of a song by Bradford, who supported Morrissey at the Wolverhampton gig in '88.

Dead Can Dance – American Dreaming Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure the first '???' you posted is:

"Feel alone in the brands of rapture
And leave alone for the loss"

And the other '???' line is:

"Here alone on the grounds of allegiances we've left behind"

And of course the word before 'somnambulistic' is just 'forlorn' again.

Hope this helps. :)

Morrissey – Dear God, Please Help Me Lyrics 15 years ago
Hmm. I'm quite skeptical of the view that the song's about his love of Rome because of the verse:

"Will you follow and know
Know me more than you do
Track me down and try to win me"

It seems to me that someone following him and tracking him down would apply more to a person than a city.

Morrissey – I Knew I Was Next Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about the criticism Morrisseyfaced throughout his career, particularly by the British music press.

Morrissey – Human Being Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a New York Dolls cover.

The Lemonheads – Skulls (Misfits cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Fantastic cover.

Morrissey – Sunny Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about the boxer Sonny Liston.

"Punched and fell then you felt embarrassed" - there was a famous bout Liston had with Muhammad Ali, where he was knocked out in the first round. It is alleged that he threw the fight to pay off debts to gamblers.

He died of a drug overdose, and was supposedly found with a syringe in his arm, which would fit with the third verse.

Morrissey – There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends Lyrics 15 years ago
As am I. It's the perfect funeral song, really.

Morrissey – Mexico Lyrics 15 years ago
In the album version of this song, "If you’re rich and you’re white you’ll be alright" is changed to "If you're rich and you're white you think you're so right".

Morrissey – My Life Is A Succession Of People Saying Goodbye Lyrics 15 years ago
The song is actually called 'My Life Is A Succession Of People Saying Goodbye'.

Morrissey – Pashernate Love Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, it's titled 'Pashernate Love'.

I think Morrissey is basically talking about how love can supposedly do all these fantastic things, bringing people back from the dead and so forth, but "it wouldn't lay one single finger on me".

"I'm always there, it's always elsewhere" suggests that Morrissey's there, waiting, but love just seems to be something that evades him.

Morrissey – Let The Right One Slip In Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about being more open to people in the hopes of finding "the right one", and as enolf said, not automatically rejecting everyone and holding them to impossibly high standards.

Morrissey – A Swallow On My Neck Lyrics 15 years ago
As well as referring to Jake's penchant for fake tattoos, a swallow on one's neck could also be a Morrisseyism for a love-bite - ie. swallowing on someone's neck. Would make sense, considering:

"He drew
A swallow, deep and blue
And soon, everyone knew "

Morrissey – King Leer Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with muadDib76, it's about the narrator trying to please someone but they're having nothing of it really. He tries to ply them with drink, give them gifts, but they still don't phone back.

For those who don't know, Tizer is a cheap-and-nasty red soft drink.

The performance of this on the 'Live in Dallas' DVD is indeed fantastic.

Beborn Beton – Myer's Flat Lyrics 15 years ago
Cop stops goth on highway, goth kills cop. Self-explanatory really.

Type O Negative – Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
Uh, Neil Young does not suck as a singer, and the original is much better.

Talking Heads – Psycho Killer Lyrics 16 years ago
In regard to benfoldsfan's query about the French lyrics, "fais" comes from the verb 'faire', which means 'to do'. Although what you have heard is probably correct, as French phrases can sometimes not make sense when taken literally, I think what alexboy wrote makes sense in this context.

R.E.M. – Electron Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
At the Balloch concert on 18th June, when introducing the song, Michael Stipe said something along the lines of:

"This song is about a new drug called Electron Blue, and it's made of light. It's set in the very near future."

David Bowie – Starman Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm fairly certain vampiresshumane was talking about new music in general, not Bowie's new stuff. Silly people...

I think the song is commenting on the general close-mindedness of adults, and how we're so set in our ways and oppose change. So yeah, the Starman could be the literal meaning (ie. he's an alien and wants nothing to do with most of our race) or he could represent change (for the better). That's my interpretation anyway.

Bauhaus – Boys Lyrics 16 years ago
For some reason, I've always assumed it was about cross-dressers/transsexuals.

Green Day – Minority Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics aren't exactly rocket science, the song is basically about being rebellious and not following the crowd.

Now let us all laugh at "preps" for being conformists... while wearing our new Green Day t-shirts from Hot Topic, as advertised on MTV.

Voltaire – The Sexy Data Tango Lyrics 16 years ago
It's "gel packs", not "jam packs".

Voltaire – The USS Make Shit Up Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it should be "bajoran space" instead of "bajoran's face".
