Evanescence – Going Under Lyrics | 18 years ago |
In a lot of these songs, there seems to be a common thread of 'I am not me' playing opposite the 'significant other' story. Some of the lyrics can be thought of as Amy saying that the way she has acted around people is not who she really is, but makes people accept her; she almost starts to believe her own lie before she finally decides to be herself and stop acting. Then, there is the psychological abuse of a significant other that she finally gets the courage to break away from. Maybe it's just me, but the fact that so many of their songs deal with the personal duality makes it seem plausible. |
Evanescence – Breathe No More Lyrics | 18 years ago |
First, I know you can interpret the song any way you want, but seriously, eating disorder?? Amy and Ben never faced eating disorders. How could that be their meaning? Second, this is how I see it: As with many other songs by Ev (Going Under, Taking over me, Everybody's Fool, Away From Me, etc.), this is Amy dealing with the fact that, in order to be accepted by people, has been acting one way in front of people, all while knowing inside that she was something else. She wonders if anyone can see who she really is, see through the act and love her for the truth. If you watch the video for Everybody's Fool, she acts out the whole mirror storyline from this song. As she looks in the mirror she sees how she has become 2 different people, and hits the mirror cutting herself deeply. The mirror shatters, pieces fall, she bleeds. Amazing lyrics if you ask me... |
Evanescence – Missing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is what I hear at the begining of the song: can you stop the fire, can you stand to fight her (i would have written 'stand a fighter'), you can't stop the fire, you won't say the words.(you can hear it better in the older Not For Your Ears version) I think it makes sense if you think that she was fighting for the relationship (with boyfriend/friend/parents) and they wouldn't say or show that they cared. I personally think that it is about a boyfriend/lover, just from my own personal experience. And "home" can be with your lover, not neccessarily your childhood home with your parents. I think the first verse is a testimonial to the person, saying that, one day, you'll realize something is missing from your life; you won't know exactly what it is, but it is me that is missing. I think that it is telling that person that they made a mistake in letting go. The rest of the song is the sad realization that the person she cares so deeply for doesn't care at all about her, and there is nothing you can do to change it. I definitely relate to the song in this way on a personal level. I aslo love Amy's voice and the emotion that she conveys with it, along with the beautiful piano during the chorus of the old version. I can see some sort of connection between this and Exodus, but there are a lot of songs that have similar stories and meanings in them. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – This Time Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I was listening to this the other day and "someday we'll wave hello and wish we'd never said goodbye to this romance" got me thinking. If you haven't noticed, Billy still wears his wedding band, so maybe some of the song is inspired by what happened with his short marriage. Maybe letting go for the wrong reasons or something. This song means a lot more to me after a bad experience; someone letting go because of circumstance and nothing else. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Speed Kills Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is one of my favorite songs on Machina. to Mortonium Ice: it actually made it onto the Japanese release of the Machina album. I don't know which version the original post was for, but the lyrics are the same for both versions of the song. The original version was also on the Stand Inside Your Love single. Everyone should try to find both versions because they are both great. As for meaning, I think Mortonium Ice had it right. I don't think that Billy has used hard drugs in a very long time. I think it was a part of the concept story of the Machina albums. I Want the Pumpkins Back! |

The Smashing Pumpkins – Waiting Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I believe the line is "antennas draw the passengers" and not "and dinners draw the passengers" as above. good, simple song. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Stars Falling Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Yes the name is "stars fall in" as seen on the Mashed Potatoes box set. Some one might want to see about changing these lyrics. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Saturnine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
rockstar001, what's your source for those lyrics? i don't hear that in either version of this song. By the way www.spfc.org is the best site for pumpkin lyrics out there. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Let Me Give the World to You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
responding to why SP didn't include this on Machina I :I think that they and the label thought that the album was getting to long and that this would put it over the edge. It would have pushed it really close to another double disc (which it really should have been a triple disc, as shown by the release of Machina II). I think that this could have fit on Adore just fine. It is a lot like Perfect in many ways. But oh well. Atleast it got out there to the fans in the end. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – I of the Mourning Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There are mistakes in these lyrics. it's " as I of the mourning now COME" and "cause I of the mourning now COME" and before "I sit in dark light", the it goes "as my radio plays my favorite song radio, radio radio, I'm alone radio, radio radio, please don't go" some one needs to fix that. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Galapogos Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The spoken part in the middle is best heard through studio type headphones. Billy says "I'm sorry I put you through this shit....I'm sorry ....I'm sorry....I'm sorry....I'm sorry I really think this song was about his wife and how they were splitting up. But we can all find our own meanings, so who knows for sure. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Bury Me Lyrics | 19 years ago |
according to spfc.org, it says "Over you, Like an Angel." I'm Not really sure though. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Blissed and Gone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Not that I want to tear down any of the ideas posted, but keep in mind that the song was originally written during the Adore sessions, so it can't be about the break up of the band or the fans after the last show. I think it makes sense that it is about a passed love that is regretting their decision to break up and wants to get back together. And Billy is saying I told you we shouldn't have broken up. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
xxtonitetonitexx, who do you think you are telling anyone that there interpretation is wrong. there is no right or wrong ( although, I have never heard that Billy wrotethis song about his handicapped brother as he di Spaceboy). Every listener can have a different interpretation, even the same listener at different times. so back off and let people think what they want. On another note, I personally like the live versions where he sings "and the embers never fade in MY city by the lake, the place where I was born." great way to reference chicago in a song. |
Evanescence – My Immortal (Piano - Vocal Version) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Does anyone know the easiest way to find this version with Origin being out of print? I really want to hear it for myself. All of the descriptions seem to say it is even better than the Fallen version. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Muzzle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I believe that for Billy personally, this song was about his soon to be ex-wife. He dedicated it to her. He was going through the divorce around the time of the MC&IS sessions and even today he still wears his wedding band. So I think the entire song is about how he was feeling about the love he had for his wife and how losing it made him feel. So i agree with the above interpretations that it was about a girl and a love that was lost. Even though it is most likely about that, I believe that songs are open to any number of interpretations based on what the listener is going through at that moment. So I won't claim that anyone else is wrong or right with their ideas. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Rain Drops + Sun Showers Lyrics | 19 years ago |
zhockey7 was close. On VH1 storry tellers, Billy said that the song was about how nothing is ever seems to be good enough for the other person when you are in a relationship. Walking "between the raindrops" is a physical impossibilty. Just like making your partner completely Happy. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Appels + Oranjes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think there is a lot to think about in zero00000's post, but I have to question if air can "let" you breath. It's just air. Anyway, one thing that comes to my mind when I hear the line 'what if this sound could bring you peace' is that maybe "you" was really Billy and "this sound" was this song. From what I have heard, Billy's was going through a rough time (yet again, which made the music better) with the death of his mother, Jimmy not being in the band and still not being over his divorce ( he still wears the wedding band). but what do I really know. Sorry about the length of the post for those who are still reading this. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – The Everlasting Gaze Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Only 2 comments so far? In my opinion, not stating for fact, I think Billy was talking to his fans and critics "ya know I'm not dead" after not having a new album for several years. In some ways the chorus could be a call out to the fans to announce that they were back and ready to Rock again after mellowing out on Adore. Please, if you don't like my ideas ignore me. Trashing other people's comments is a waste of the space on these pages. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – Behold! The Night Mare Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I would have to assume that this song was inspired by the unfortunate passing of Billy's mother, as are most of the songs on Adore. My personal interpretation of "The Night Mare Rides On" is two fold. 1) some one on a black horse rides on: as in Life goes on. And 2) it could be a play on words: nightmare- as in a living nightmare that goes on after a loved ones death. Any one care to comment on that idea? I definitely have to agree that the last line is the best and most haunting line I have heard. |
The Smashing Pumpkins – The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I have heard the Story Tellers story and it goes something like this. In the first verse, Dusty is murdered by Pete "Pistol Pete romoves the final breaths from her." She, however, is not aware of the fact that she is dead (maybe think Sixth Sense). So she keeps calling to him and he never responds( see the chorus) This tale is of course made up and had no real life inspiration as far as Billy cared to tell. |
