Despite the whole ian mackaye/straightedge thing, the song sounds very much like something to do with heroin, and it may be written from another persons perspective (perhaps somone ian knew who went that route and ended up dying, hence the sombre song). Brilliant song though. |

I'm pretty sure this song is how Ian is fed up with the typical hardcore audience that he became used to. And the fact that most people at hardcore shows doesnt really listen to the lyrics that are being sung and if they are trying to listen, it's hard to hear due to intense speed of the lyrics and the amount of movement on stage and of the audience hitting off the performers that not all the words get into the mic. And to Ian the words are very very important and I know he likes to have people understand him when he talks/sings and that often doesn't happen at hardcore shows unless the audience have gone out and bought their album and listened to it with the lyrics before the show happened. It's interesting to see that this is ian stating that he is fed up with it, and not too long later - with Fugazi, and The Evens, he has acted upon the line 'Maybe we better slow down' and did that, and it appears that more people are listening to what he has to say. I think this really shows Ian's positive character that when he see's something he doesn't like or is wrong, he goes to improve it. |

i think (seeing as this one of the last songs written by brad, since it was on the last album) that this is kind of a realization that he understands he has become the pawn in the music industry's game that he never wanted to be.
this is shown when he says 'i feel old design', hes wishing he could go back to the low profile bars
and 'i just cant hide' meaning that he cant go back and he cant hide from the fame he has given himself
the music industry is a greedy business, and it's sad how artists are treated just as money by major record labels... but that's why its called the music industry i guess.. not the music co-operation or something :( |

Also, in addition to that, before the first line of the last stanza, the riff + stops are the exact same as yellin' in my ear by op ivy.
I belive LoC have some kind of personal issue with Tim Armstrong, cos in 'Clear Channel Fuck Off' they class Rancid along with Nickleback, Creed etc.
But I don't blame tim, cos' he's just a fucking idiot and DEFINITLY SHOULDN'T be a spokesperson for any band. That is one of the reasons why Rancid never were/never will be as great as Op Ivy. Jesse Michaels knew how to talk. |

obviously op ivy say pick it up. the offspring are making a joke with this double sided meaning:
at face value it means 'dont pick it up cos it might be dirty' or whatever
but they are also saying dont pick it up as in, dont play ska.... which is obviously a joke since this song obviosuly has ska elements AND the offspring used to be freinds with op ivy i belive as i recall noodles saying in an interview somethign about 'back in the op ivy days' or something like that. |

The song is quite similar to Operation Ivy's 'Sound System'..... Which was realeased before Ixnay on the Hombre...
Also in 'Sound System' they say something similar to the part in this song that goes 'Dont pick it up... dont pick it up... dont pick it up....''. Theres also the same drumbeat in that part aswell..
Perhaps this song is a metaphor for The Offspring saying that ska is doggy doo?? HAhah I hope not, becuause Ska is great, and so are The Offspring.... |

Even though most songs about love get annoying and I sort of agree with you - more than 3% of The Ramones songs are about 'girls' and they were one of the first ever big punk rock bands, anyway this song is alright, but anyone who is cool will know that 'fat mike's still his hero' fat mike is the singer/bassist for NOFX - one of the best punk bands ever. |
