Madonna – Paradise (Not for Me) Lyrics 14 years ago
In her brother Christopher's book, he says she dedicated the song to him once, but I don't necessarily know if it was written for him. Maybe she just thought it was an appropriate song, of all the songs she sang that night, to dedicate to him. He said the song didn't really have any specific message, but if you read the book, the lyrics do seem to fit with everything he says about their relationship. So maybe it's one of those songs that could mean many things.

Duran Duran – Seven and the Ragged Tiger Lyrics 14 years ago
I just edited the lyrics, but I'm still not sure how accurate these lyrics are. I've read them elsewhere, and I've even seen some scribbled lyrics that were supposedly from Simon himself, but it was hard to read his writing, if, indeed, it was his writing.

Duran Duran – Red Carpet Massacre Lyrics 15 years ago
Here are the lyrics for the first verse from dd.com. They are a little bit different. I can understand that it's hard to understand what is being said sometimes.

Red Carpet Massacre

dark sun rose on the ridge cut clear across the sky
as good a day as any to die
no reservation Madam no reason to know why
running late stiletto heels
strike the crew, send up the wheels
you spend a life in preparation for this day
breathe in the air it’s loaded with fame
check out those weapons sister before you hit the fray
string o pearls -V- ditzy gems
enter the battle of the lenses

red carpet massacre
don't wanna hassle ya
red carpet massacre
death squad paparazzi ah!
red carpet massacre
It's gonna mess wiv ya
we’re in business - you're on the hit-list

Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about Caroline Kennedy. He saw a picture of her that was so sweet and innocent that he just knew he had to write a song about it. With that in mind, I don't think he wrote it as a love song.

Yeah, that's right, blame sexism. Every time a woman is insulted, it's because of sexism. As long as women CHOOSE to continue to view themselves only in terms of oppression, they will always be looked down upon, if only in their mind.

George Michael – Freedom! '90 Lyrics 15 years ago
You serious? He didn't come out till the late 90's? I seem to remember knowing when I was about 8 years old, in the early nineties. But maybe I'm remembering wrong. Or maybe it was just an open secret. But yeah, when I first saw the video I was about 11 (1994) and I only saw it while waiting for Ace of Base to come on VH-1 and MTV, so I wasn't privy to all this backstory. And knowing that George Michael was gay, I assumed that's what the song was about. I didn't know the girls in the video were famous supermodels either so I missed that whole aspect of the video as well. Hey, everything's up for interpretation. Most often you will not know what the artist really meant, and it's not really important. Though it can be of interest. Thanks.

The Chicks – Not Ready To Make Nice Lyrics 15 years ago
It's also the name of a book. I don't know what was or wasn't in their death threat letter/s, but there is a book out by Laura Ingraham with that title. I think, on the one hand, celebrities have every right to say whatever they want about politics but on the other hand, they have to be careful. Their opinions hold enormous weight so they ought to know what they are talking about for one, they shouldn't just speak to hear the sound of their own voice because they are not average citizens, they are role models, whether they like it or not (now I'm not saying the Dixie Chicks said something wrong, I'm just saying in general, celebrities need to be extra careful of what they say), and two, there are times and places for that kind of talk and it's not on stage when you're meant to be entertaining people who paid good money to come see you. They didn't pay to be lectured to. It's just common courtesy. You can say whatever you want, but there's being considerate and then there's being inconsiderate. But lots of people don't want to be considerate, I think there are women who are so paranoid when it comes to sexism that they don't even know the difference between being silenced and common courtesy. And the same goes for men.

The Chicks – Not Ready To Make Nice Lyrics 15 years ago
Don't blame this on them being women. Male celebrities have spoken out against the war and have been attacked too, like Sean Penn. I haven't taken the time to compare the reactions to Sean Penn with the reactions to Dixie Chicks, but I'm sick of people using gender as an excuse for everything.

The saying "Shut up and Sing" refers to celebrities who use their fame to convert others to their point of view. While I agree that the Dixie Chicks have a right to voice their views.that doesn't mean they have the right to an audience and if people don't agree with them, that's all part of freedom of speech (though freedom of speech stops short of death threats which are absolutely inexcusable and the result of crazy people in the world). Back to their statement, didn't they say this in London? I think part of the controversy was that they went to another country and said they were ashamed of America's president, and perhaps this was viewed as a way for them to win favor with the British at the expense of their own country. This is what I heard (don't know if it's true) and I also heard that Natalie did try to apologize at one point, but now suddenly (three years later) she changes her mind. Also, these are country singers. They have a different kind of audience than, say, punk rockers. Which would make them more prone to controversy. You'd expect comments like that from punk rockers, so what else is new, right? Even just plain rockers.

Chryssie Hynde said far more insulting things. She's a woman too. Just curious, did she get criticized half as much as the DCs did? I don't know.

Anyway, I don't like overtly political music, I find it lame. I don't want to listen to that. That doesn't make me close-minded, it just offends my taste in music, I guess.

For example, have you ever heard of the poem "The Ball Turret Gunner"? I always use this as an example. This is an example of a poem that conveys the horror of war using images as opposed to blatantly overt lines that come out and say exactly what you're supposed to get. The latter is cheap, easy and, in my opinion, just plain bad writing. If you want to talk politics, take out a column in a newspaper, don't cheapen art.

But of course, this is all my opinion. And according to those who support the Dixie Chicks, I have a right to my opinion.

By the way, I'm not from Canada. Please don't take my ID too literally. It's a reference to a song.

Duran Duran – Come Undone Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about Adam and Eve. Simon will probably deny it, but it's there for me.

Mine, immaculate dream made breath and skin
I've been waiting for you
Signed, with a home tattoo,
Happy birthday to you was created for you

(Actually, woman was created after man, according to the Bible, they were to be companions)

(can't ever keep from falling apart
At the seams
Can't I believe you're taking my heart
To pieces)

(falling apart makes me think of loss of innocence)

Oh, it'll take a little time,
might take a little crime
to come undone now

(coming undone reminds me of loss of innocence)

(PRECHORUS)
We'll try to stay blind
to the hope and fear outside

(ignorance is essential to paradise)

Hey child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry

(CHORUS)
Who do you need, who do you love
When you come undone
(repeat)

Duran Duran – Is There Something I Should Know? Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is clearly directed toward a divine being. I actually didn't figure that out until seeing the video so the video clued me in. But then it was obvious. The lines "There's a dream that strings the road, with broken glass for US to hold" and "And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door". And "I know you're watching me every minute of the day, I've seen the signs..." and "Can you read my mind can you see in the snow". I personally think the red ball stands for knowledge. I don't know why I think that but I do.

Leonard Cohen – Waiting For The Miracle Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok, I think I figured it out. It's about him missing out on love because he was waiting for the right woman. I think it's a reference to the old biblical story about how a guy's house was being engulfed with water from the river and three airplanes came by to help but he brushed them all off saying "No, I believe Jesus will save me". Turns out thos three airplanes were sent by some divine being and he missed out.

Duran Duran – Election Day Lyrics 17 years ago
The first verse makes me think of the band, how they were treated as criminals for having fun and then they went on strike. This song was released by one of the splinter groups Arcadia but Duran Duran would sometimes play it in concert. This song came out four years after DD's first album release. It's like they had four years "in office" and then they had to prove themselves yet again so that the people would "re-elect" them.

Duran Duran – Burning the Ground Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great song. It's a mix of all their hits but it's got meaning on it's own. The first part seems to symbolize the band's search for fame and creating an image for itself. "Find Duran Duran" and "Just a second, I'll put something on". Trying to marry style and substance.

Then there's the line "Can you hear me now". I wonder if they're responsible for that cell commercial. Anyway, this lyric seems to express the need for communication through the medium of music, having something to say and wanting others to hear and understand.

Burning the ground I've read others say reminds them of how DD were entering a new era and shedding themselves of the past and starting again as a different five members. But also in the beginning, they wanted to lead music listeners out of the dark days of punk, they wanted to help set down the groundwork for this new music scene. But with the burning forests in the background it also seems like this song could be a commentary on the burning of the rain forests. I read that somewhere. And that would explain the line "I tell you somebody's fooling around" maybe.

And "The Rhythm is the power" relates to making music as well. Great song. Duran Duran never does anything half way.

Duran Duran – Un Autre Que Moi Lyrics 17 years ago
The French version of Someone Else Not Me. It sounds to me like this song is about Simon not necessarily wanting out of his marriage, it might have something to do with how he was feeling about the band at that period of time. In fact, I think this was the only song he wrote on that last album Pop Trash before the reunion.

U2 – New Year's Day Lyrics 17 years ago
How about this? My losing weight analogy was probably not a wise one. But maybe on the day before Christmas vacation I could have an F in one of my classes, and then on New Year's Day, suddenly all that is wiped out and all my poor test grades are discarded. Maybe that would be nice if the world worked like that.

U2 – New Year's Day Lyrics 17 years ago
The problem with this song is that it's taking a belief in a new day/a new year and totally exaggerating what that means. Of course nothing changes on New Year's Day if you're talking about the dead or old hurts. People don't suddenly come back to life, pain doesn't all of a sudden disappear. It's a fresh start but that's really just a way of being optimistic and saying "I will change, I will put the past behind me". Change is a very personal thing and on top of that it doesn't come about over night. That is obvious and there has never been anyone stating otherwise. For example, World War II. Do you think people just woke up one day and found themselves being persecuted or persecuting others? It's a very gradual process. This song is saying that you don't just wake up on New Year's Day and all of a sudden it's "The Golden Age" or all of a sudden it's "The Renaissance". Actually, isn't every new year a renaissnace in a sense. Anyway, no duh. It's like saying "Tomorrow I'm going to suddenly drop fifty pounds". Yeah right. So is this song saying that when people do nothing they shouldn't expect something in return? Or is it saying that this world sucks because nothing ever changes on New Year's Day? I've been thinking it's the latter in which case it would be a pointless song because of course nothing happens at the drop of a hat. If that was the case then wouldn't life be just grand all around? If that was the case then we'd be living in Shangri-La.

I actually have heard this song now and it sounds very much like The Seventh Stranger's tune in parts so that would explain my above comment. I heard very poor quality so it sounded more like Michael Jackson singing than Simon but oh well. You know I think when I first heard about this song and heard that it sounded similar to The 7th Stranger I actually imagined the correct tune for the chorus in my head. That's funny.

Jimmy Eat World – New Religion Lyrics 17 years ago
1. Duran Duran is the name of an evil villain in the 1968 movie Barbarella starring Jane Fonda. The band liked that it was from a movie (the club they used to play at was called Barbarella too I think) and that it wasn't something many people knew about.

2. I submitted the lyrics of New Religion to the Duran Duran page just a few days ago so therefore whoever submitted these lyrics wouldn't have gotten them from here.

Duran Duran – Hungry Like The Wolf Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh yeah, and the video was kind of interesting to watch for this song. Like where Simon gets scratched near the end. It's interesting because he's the pursuer, he claims he's the one on the hunt like a wolf and yet he is also the pursued. It also reminds me of that scene in the beginning of the extended version of Wild Boys where Simon throws his head to the side as if he's been bitten by a vampire or something. I know they've got the vampires coming in later in that video. Duran Duran is big on vampires and zombie images I think and being pursued and turned into monsters.
