Bebo Norman – I'm Alright Lyrics 21 years ago
optimism.

When I feel crappish... this song gets me back in perspective. It's a lovely songg =)

Even when the world is treating this guy badly, he thinks bout how God gave him hope and helps him stay in perspective and not be afraid.

I love the line "What doesn't kill you just makes you harder." It speaks more truth than "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." You dont get strong, you just harden your heart.

awesome.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 21 years ago
Previous comments ranged from mockery to drugs to sex and depression.

Honestly, I agree with the first.

Smells like teen spirit? I mean, cmon. It's really mocking the way teens act in the world today... he's sort of poking fun at his audience while they scream and worship him as their idol.

The first verse talks about how teens are severely insecure. They do things in packs, stupid things especially. They feel useless and "depressed" - rather "over bored" than depressed, just bored of themselves and not knowing what to make of their lives. "Load up on guns" (defense) and "bring your friends" (insecure w/o companionship even if temporary). Half of them don't know what they're depressed about, they just believe they are. Over reacting. "Oh no, I know a dirty word." Thinking the world is going to end over something so miniscule.

I think each verse represents a different group of people. Different types of people. Different types of teenage reactions.

Third verse describes those who are too tired to care. They doubt everything. More over, they don't give a flying cracker. You've seen them before, those kids who (opposite of those in the first verse) avoid any contact and drone on in their lives. "Why I taste... I guess it makes me smile... whatever nevermind." The half-wakes. Also a large part of the audience.

Finally, the chorus. Ahh... the chorus. Slicing it into chunks

"With the lights out, it's less dangerous." The naiive thought that what you can't see can't hurt you.. something that's practically an anthem for teenagers. The idea that they're invincible.

"I feel stupid and contagious." "Stupid" - Low self-esteem. "Contagious" - more susceptible than themselves contagious. Lack of personal stability and how the mindset can be changed so easily.. whats the word.. uhh.. can't think of it. Basically, lack of personal opinion and susception to change in opinion by media and peers.

"Here we are now, entertain us." He's mocking the crowd. These people who he thinks are full of this "teen spirit" are his audience and they want to be entertained. Not much in that. I'm betting he found the irony in their singing along with him in concerts though...

"Mulatto.. Albino... mosquito... libido." All just characteristics.
Mulatto and albinos - teens seeing themselves as outcasts, different, and shamed by it.
Mosquito - parasites! (I'm pretty sure mosquitos aren't really parasites, theres a term for it but I wont bother.) Leeching off life from whatever they can... the music for example.
Libido - just sexual drive I guess. Hell if I know.
"The denial" - Denying their issues. Avoidance... belief that they're so different when they arent. Sorta just the whole feeling of the song.

I deno, that's just my thoughts. As a teenager myself, I believe I can relate to the music. We all deny that we're so insecure, but we are. I don't think it gets better either, but I'm thinking he really found the irony in the kids rockin out to the music that was intended to mock their behavior and their droning. Good song. Beautiful collaboration. The just about sum up the all American "teen spirit" right on the target.
