for some reason when i hear the lines, "on your walk hold your head up high and when you watch me fall please look back for the last time brooklyn dodger", it makes me think of a death row inmate taking the "walk" to his execution and looking back at his childhood friend who walked away instead of protecting him from his older brother "for the last time." but i definately think that what explosion says happened to the boy when he was a kid, could have led him to commit a crime later on. |

this is probably the song off of La Foret that i identify with the most. because a lot of the time this is how i feel. like i will never shake my depression or the dark thoughts that are always around or the uncertainty of wether life will ever be easier. so when i sing this song, and say "so will it ever stop? will it always be this hard?" it's like i am really asking myself these questions, and yes, the answer always seems to be the same: "why ask, if it'll just let up, up, up, up, up" |

how would pitchfork media, who jamie has written for in the past by the way, know it is a LOVE SONG not a "i love my cousin" song? maybe because he let them know. (excerpt from fabulous muscles review) "Little Panda McElroy", which first appeared on the same split EP as "Fabulous Muscles", remains one of the most poignant and complicated love songs I've ever heard. With lyrics like, "I can stop wanting to kill myself.../ Because of you," this is about as far from your typical, rote and sterile love song as you can get. This version offers an even more moving musical exploration, as Stewart's breathy voice is subsumed by pulsing electronic drones into a single, insistent beat. and why would 5rc, xiu xiu's label, promote the cd by using these references to a LOVE SONG? "The most central theme is about negative dominance politically, sexually and emotionally... "despite the space of a new, hopeful relationship." i think its about someone with gender identity issues or androginy that feels that because she/he is maybe somewhere in the middle of being a boy or a girl noone would be able to love her/him. at one point i thought it might be about an experience jamie had because he says "preschool students ask her what she is" ...and he was a preschool teacher and he is kind of androgenous (his nickname is ponygirl)... and kids are sometimes very quick to pick up on things like that. ive been told by kids sometimes when i don't act like a male sterotype that i act like a girl or sound like a girl... but im not really sure...that's just the way i interpret it |

i think you're both right. i actually think i identify with jamie for giving the song this title. ive actually always thought that jennifer lopez is a pretty tragic example of someone who is an entertainer and dancer and goes on stage and puts on the guise of being happy, but on a more personal level is kind of lost and unhappy and... keeps marrying people...desperately making unsucessful efforts to find someone to take away her loneliness, that always end in divorce "you've seen me dance here alone before is it tough to watch friday after friday? in the king james version of the bible, in song of solomon, solomon says i am the rose of sharon. but some people call jesus the rose of sharon. also in grapes of wrath, one of jamie's favorite books there is a character who is named rose of sharon who is left by her husband. so i think jamie uses that name as a reference for someone who is rejected or unwanted despite desperatly trying to be as sweet as they can. like jesus was rejected and killed. no. it is jane s. in an interview he talks about "getting drunk and making out" with a girl at a party and really really liking her, but she doesn't really feel the same way. then jamie talks about feeling really embarassed about feeling so devastated about the situation because the relationship was never really serious. just a "getting drunk and making out at a party" relationship. and the reference to an ian curtis wishlist, means a list of things that you have desperately convinced yourself to believe you want and will come true, but realistically never will. tragic. like ian curtis' ian curtis wishlist. |

jamie said in an interview that he had watched or heard footage of soldiers in iraq pumping themselves up for thier "missions" in a "let's go blow some fucking heads off" kind of way. this resembles what jocks do before a game (mission). and really is it not blatantly obvious that a very very very large percentage of soldiers were most likely ex-jocks. i think they carry that brutally competitive, win at any cost, attitude with them to war. taught to win. winning being the most important mission for them. that dynamic of their personalities is what jamie, i believe, is refering to. and there is nothing childish about that. it is legitamate. and regarding his brutal description of the four year old girl's death...its just a very crude but true depiction of situations that iraqi families have been put in. this song is kind of prophetic about jamie stewart's dad's suicide. he wrote it before his dad died. in an interview he talks about how this song is the hardest to perform because he wrote it before his dad died, and it kind of foreshadowed what would happen. plus it is still very fresh in his mind. |
