This song is absolutely amazing. It's pretty self explanatory.

In fact, I always assumed it was 'don't bless me for my wrongs', which'll teach me not to proof-read the lyrics before I post them...

Big Black – Bad Penny Lyrics 17 years ago
Could be, I'm just going by the site I saw these lyrics on. A lot of the lyrics on that site are pretty off the mark, if I'm honest, but they're still the closest I've seen...

Mr. Bungle – Vanity Fair Lyrics 17 years ago
I'd say it's about how religion asks people to put themselves through stupid things, the example being used is castration (look up the Skoptsi if you don't get it), but could be applied in a wider sense. If I could think of an actual example, I'd give one though.

My favourite song of all time.

Fucking great song, too.

My favourite Atoms song. I imagine I'm not alone in this view.

The Atoms – You Can't Break Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
I had to have a stab at this by ear, so the middle eight might be wrong. The rest I'm all pretty sure I got right, though.

The Atoms – Joe Is A Remedial Lyrics 17 years ago
...Hence the title. Something tells me that was somewhat obvious - suppose I'm a bit of a remo for that one.

The Atoms – Joe Is A Remedial Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not sure if these are 100% accurate - the third verse in particular I've probably fucked up a lot. But it's the best I could manage by ear. And if the line about jerking off all day is wrong, then I apologise deeply to Joe Atom for suggesting that this might be what he does with his day.

And also, Remo is apparantly short for 'Remedial'.

The Jesus Lizard – Mouth Breather Lyrics 17 years ago
I always assumed a 'Mouth Breather' was just supposed to be someone who's stupid, they're not smart enough to breathe through their nose. So I figured this song was supposed to be about how he likes the friend, he's just an idiot for taking the drugs (and overdosing while looking after his house etc etc).

Therapy? – Evil Elvis Lyrics 18 years ago
Couldn't agree more. Shame there's not more bands out there like the Wildhearts and Therapy? these days who are capable of coming up with b-sides which are as good as, if not better than, their a-sides. Or indeed bands who use new songs as b-sides at all...

Slayer – Guilty of Being White (Minor Threat cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Now... I'm fully aware that Slayer aren't a racist band, and neither were Minor Threat, but... uhh... maybe (to the last two commentors especially), if you don't want Slayer to be called a racist band... you should be just that little bit more careful of what you say? I'm not saying you had any racist intent behind what you said, but surely you can see that people are going to interpret it that way? Whatever, fuck it.

Lardpony – Post-Apocalyptic Love Song Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about someone who decides that, if the world was to end, he'd want to spend it with his girlfriend, and hopes she'd want to do the same. And then he manages to convince himself that if she doesn't that the end will come and the human race will die out as they won't be together to repopulate it.

Lardpony – Contains Mild Peril Lyrics 18 years ago
Haha, Lardpony crack me up... I think the main lyrics are self-explanatory, but for those who don't get the title and chorus, when trailers show for films in Britain (I dunno if they have the same system elsewhere) they put the reason that the film got the rating it did, eg. Contains moderate sex references. And one reason sometimes given is 'Contains mild peril'. Yes, mild peril.

Big Black – Kerosene Lyrics 18 years ago
'There's only two things to do (in small-town America). Go blow up a whole load of stuff for fun. Or have a lot of sex with the one girl in town who'll have sex with anyone. 'Kerosene' is about a guy who tries to combine the two pleasures'

Big Black – Fish Fry Lyrics 18 years ago
My favourite Big Black song, and, as ever, it's a charming little tale. It's about a guy who raped and murdered a girl because she wouldn't go out with his brother, but when he asked her out she said yes. He committed the rape and murder on the date, and when he was arrested he was calmly cleaning the blood off his car. Yes, it's a true story. She worked in her parents' fish fry, hence the title.

Big Black – Bazooka Joe Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about someone who joins the army and goes to war at a really young age, like 16 or 17. They spend years there and as a result, when they get back all they've done for the past few years, and for their adult life, is kill people. It's all they know. So they get talked into becoming an assassin for a local crime ring.

Big Black – Bad Penny Lyrics 18 years ago
I think I fucked your girlfriend once... maybe twice, I don't remember
Then I fucked all your friends' girlfriends -- now they hate you

Amazing bit, that is... I think it's about people who just burn their bridges and look out for themselves and themselves only.

The Wildhearts – The Bullshit Goes On Lyrics 18 years ago
It was originally called 'Just Stay', but then Ginger had an argument with a record company executive and changed the entire lyrics. Hence the lines about it being the same old fucking song and so on. So it's all about the record company screwing them over and interfering in things they don't understand because they've never been in a band.

submissions
Glassjaw – Convectuoso Lyrics 18 years ago
Because it was originally a b-side to Ry Ry's Song (I think), and after they switched from Roadrunner to Warner, Roadrunner were able to stop this from getting onto the album thanks to the fact it had originally been released through them. Bunch of fucking assholes (Roadrunner, not Glassjaw).

The Smiths – Paint a Vulgar Picture Lyrics 18 years ago
'y did the smiths breakup?'

Band tensions had been running high for a long time, especially since Johnny Marr preferred to have John Porter as the producer, while Morrissey preferred Stephen Street. Morrissey was accused of sabotaging a few songs, such as Ask, and it apparantly started to get unworkable. They were forced to take on a new manager who (for reasons I can't remember) they couldn't work with at all, and so he was fired and replaced by Johnny Marr, who eventually got sick of it and decided to take a break. However, they then had to record b-sides for the Girlfriend In A Coma single, and they got in an argument because Morrissey wanted to (and eventually did) do a Cilla Black cover. Marr left the band, and they eventually decided to split up rather than attempt to replace him.

If anyone else wants to correct me on any points there, go ahead.

The Smiths – Never Had No One Ever Lyrics 18 years ago
I'd heard it was about the council estate where he grew up (the British equivalent to the 'ghettos' in America, for the non-British fans), which was a partiicularly rough area of Manchester. He was very lacking in confidence, and often found it hard to walk the streets for fear of being beaten up. This is about being in awe of people who could walk around there without that fear, and it's about just admiring them from a distance, most likely platonically.

The Smiths – A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is about someone coming out of a relationship and the 'rehabilitation' period where they try to fall back out of love. The hung by his neck thing could be the end of the relationship, the mystical time zone being the irrationality one feels after such an event, the returning home could be his return to sanity. The person could then be forced to return to live with his parents while he gets back on his feet, hence his talking with his father. The 'rush and a push and the land that we stand on is ours' could refer to his attempting to fall back in love again, and he feels that if he keeps trying, he can force it, even if he's denying that he wants to feel it. He feels jealous of those he considers to be beneath him, and who are in love themselves. Eventually, someone recognises that, although his innocence (or youth) is gone, he is, at heart, a good man (I think that bit about 'your youth may be gone...' etc is told from someone else's point of view, talking to him), and he starts to fall in love again.

Even if that's wrong, it's more plausible than Viet-bloody-nam. Come on, he's BRITISH, for fuck's sake. He's not going to sing about Vietnam. At least Everyday Is Like Sunday is a song which makes more sense if you're British, this is a far more universal song...

Vietnam? Jeez...

The Smiths – London Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about someone from the North of England (an area which is generally quite poor and working class) to go to live in the South, which is often seen as being far richer and more middle-upper class. Euston is a train station in London where the trains from Manchester pull into. His family and girlfriend can't afford to come with him, and he's striving for independence anyway. But as it happens, he already knows he's destined for failure. Anyway, great song.

Therapy? – Teethgrinder Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about speed. Sometimes, when people take drugs like speed that give them more energy, they can't burn off the energy fast enough, which means that, when they fall asleep, their bodies try to burn it off any way they can, including grinding teeth. If this happens enough, they can grind their teeth down to stumps. Ta da!

Just a collection of handy little lines, if you ask me. I think the band got a bit obsessed with the line 'What's done is done'...
