Marillion – Berlin Lyrics 6 years ago
I remember being SO hesitant to go to my first show after Fish left...and being blown away. I love both incarnations of Marillion, and I got chills when they played this one.

It's amazing how it starts there in the small confines of her place...then swells into the swirling world, and deadly seriousness...and finally comes back to her small, lonely world of memories.

Jefferson Starship – We Built This City Lyrics 8 years ago
Holmes: I'm reminded of the curious case of the Manchurian Mambo...

Watson: Holmes, could I have a word?

Holmes: Yes, what is it?

Watson: I believe that was the Manchurian Mamba.

Holmes: Mambo, mamba. What's the difference?

Watson: Well, very little, except that one is a deadly, poisonous snake, while the other is a rather festive Carribean dance.

[Turning back to the crowd]

Holmes: It was a night like any other, when suddenly a knock came at the door. I opened it, and there were these Manchurians, doing a rather festive Carribean dance...

"Touch down" is landing (although the water landings were known as "splash" downs). Anyone from that era would recognize the term, or you can hear it on the historical recordings available online.

"Just seeing Kurt ]Cobain] write the lyrics to a song five minutes before he first sings them, you just kind of find it a little bit hard to believe that the song has a lot to say about something. You need syllables to fill up this space or you need something that rhymes." --Dave Grohl

A song about mindless zombies being played by a zombie. But how can you read your own note after you're dead if you're mindless?

The Alan Parsons Project – Don't Answer Me Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of the rare cases where the lyrics seem rather clear to me.

Picture a man and woman in a "magical" relationship that unfortunately breaks down in a very nasty way, with hurtful words and actions exchanged.

Imagine she is very strong-willed, determined not to "lose" the battle because she fears showing weaknesss more than losing what could be a beautiful love.

I'm not suggesting that all the details are laid out in the song, but these hypothetical descriptions might give a feel for what is being said:

>If you believe in the power of magic,
>I can change your mind
>And if you need to believe in someone,
>Turn and look behind

He can probably see that she's not happy, and he's asking her to give him--to give *them*--the chance to let magic work.
She doesn't need to be looking for someone to believe in--he's right there in her past.

>When we were living in a dream world,
>Clouds got in the way
>We gave it up in a moment of madness
>And threw it all away

They had it all and yet threw it all away, letting misunderstandings interfere.

>Don't answer me, don't break the silence
>Don't let me win
>Don't answer me, stay on your island
>Don't let me in

He's not suggesting this. It's more like a mocking of her behavior. I could see him thinking: "You refuse to listen to what I say because it might mean you have to let go of the anger."
"Instead of reaching out for what we could have, you throw up passive-aggressive barriers and think that's 'winning,' even though it hurts us both."

>Run away and hide from everyone
>Can you change the things we've said and done?

"You act as if you can just hide and all the accusations and actions will go away...but we hurt each other and that won't change on its own. The hurt won't go away unless we face it, not hide from it."

>If you believe in the power of magic,
>It's all a fantasy
>So if you need to believe in someone,
>Just pretend it's me

If you truly believe in the power of magic or redemption, then you know you can make your own reality through your own actions.

>It ain't enough that we meet as strangers
>I can't set you free
>So will you turn your back forever on what you mean to me?

So...are you going to sit in pain and isolation, all to avoid "giving in"...Can't you open up to me again, despite what we went through?

I love the plays with the wording. Of course, this is great:

- I fumble for the clock
- Alarmed by the seduction
- I wish that it would stop

But things like "wishing well" are a joy, too.

Yes, the word is "occasion"...it can be heard clearly as such on both live recordings and in person.

Blue Öyster Cult – Me262 Lyrics 12 years ago
My guess is that it refers to April 10, 1945, when 1,232 bombers (with about 800 escorts!) attacked targets in the Magdeburg and Berlin/Oranienburg area, and were hit by about 50 Me 262s. See http://www.goldengatewing.org/proptalk/speaker.cfm?ID=131 for an interesting story.

That seems to fit better than the April 7 "Schulungslehrgang Elbe" mission.

Sheryl Crow – All I Wanna Do Lyrics 12 years ago
The lyrics are basically word-for-word from Wyn Cooper's poem with a few slight additions and cuts (which is why Sheryl Crow's has the gap poetically). One of the few additions is in the Cooper line of "And I wonder if he’s ever had fun in his life."

Those who want to see "Fun" can go to http://ahsahtapress.boisestate.edu/books/cooper.htm
(for now, at least).

And the opening lines are from Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime," of course.

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics 12 years ago

But note that Donne's words are in reverse...they speak of the effect the lost individual has on others, not what that individual feels. The fallacy of Donne's view is illustrated by Simon & Garfunkel with the effect that the demise of the "Most Peculiar Man" had on others being noted in words only ("what a shame that he's dead, but..."). (Also, the demise of an individual unknown and alone on a literal island would hardly be noted as a loss to an individual elsewhere.)

3 Blind Mice – Your Face Is Not Enough Lyrics 12 years ago
Seems to me that there's a bit of self-talk here, trying to reduce the pain by convincing himself that the 30-year relationship was only superficial.

Marillion – Grendel Lyrics 17 years ago
"The song is quite faithful to the original. "

Except that in this version, Grendel is the protagonist, not Beowulf. In that way, it's more like Gardner's treatment than the original epic.

Marillion – Dry Land Lyrics 17 years ago
The magic of these lyrics is that the usual metaphor is reversed: Rather than saying he's adrift and she's grounded--the usual presentation of this type of love song--he's saying that she's the one who is self-isolating, while he's desolate despite being on the mainland. Still, he is the one who ran, afraid...and is haunted by that and must return to plead with her.
