for me this song is about doing everything for someone that weren't great fantastical public proclamations of love, things that are what actually make a relationship work. the protagonist (douchey word choice i know but i dont want to assume carl is writing confessional lyrics) is exhausted and tired trying to make the relationship works that he sort of resents the other person because he feels like what he's doing isn't enough but he can't help it ("didn't you ever wonder maybe if you were under your own spell...thinking it was all she wrote). it's dependency at its most wrought and because of that it is the most illogical actions and insecure thoughts that keep us on our toes when we are "in love". i could be wrong. |

kind of late, but saul williams offers his explanation:
"I received a lot of questions from some about why I would allow my song 'List of Demands' to be used in a Nike campaign. Ironically, half of the people now reading this post never heard of me until that commercial aired. That, indeed, was one of my reasons for allowing it. A small circle of poets and conscious do-gooders are not enough to effect the change necessary to shift our planet in peril. We must enlist people from all walks of life, people not accustomed to questioning the norm, people who may simply want to dance uninterrupted without message or slogan. I see no glory in 'preaching to the converted'. Furthermore, I believe fully in the power of music and have branded my work with it's own conscientious stamp and stomp of attitude fueled to steal the show in the face of the nonsensical. Quite simply, it was clear to me that people would not be rushing to the store to buy Nikes after seeing that commercial, but rather rushing to youtube or itunes to hear or download the song. I even imagined those who would be rushing to blogs to question how I could allow this to happen and the subsequent discussion of the ethical treatment of factory workers and how new minds would be informed and enlisted in the struggle for ethical change." -- Saul Williams
let me point out saul's been doing this for over a decade now and it must be frustrating for someone on the front lines to make so little effort.
Do I care about this money? I do. Will I keep this money? Very little of it. Within the year I will have given away almost a million dollars to about 100 charities and individuals, benefiting everything from hospice care to an artist who makes sculptures from Burger King bags. And the rest will be going into publishing books through McSweeney's. Would I have been able to publish McSweeney's if I had not worked at Esquire? Probably not. Where is the $6000 from Forbes going? To a guy named Joe Polevy, who wants to write a book about the effects of radiator noise on children in New England. --Dave Eggers.
george clooney has made money from an industry that is there to eliminate sad reality and escape to violent, ad-heavy fantasy and his contributions to darfur shouldn't be dismissed because of it. tracy mcgrady and lebron james have visited darfur and work for companies like nike. i'm not justifying nike purchasing and i'm definitely not gonna diss your opinion but the world isn't black and white and good and evil. if it were it would be a whole lot easier to dismiss anyone for doing a number of things that make the world better, regardless of their resources. |

yes it's in "little monsters" when fred savage and howie mandel are walking. that's all i remember. i used to like the song more but i have to skip it in the album now. that type of stuff is usually cyclical. |

in the belle and sebastian message board, they say an arab strap is pretty much a sex device for the penis. i dont know if im right, but my interpretation of the song is about someone who just got out of jail and is having a hard time adjusting to life. i love how the song sounds so happy and upbeat but the lyrics are not only about isolation and pretty dirty. |

for any other band, a song this clever and so inventive would be one of its peaks, but it's just a b-side! i love it. i love the old new orleans clarinet breakdown, the beginning, the end and the funny beach boys diss on mike love. |

the song has the same chord progression as thin lizzy's "the boys are back in town". this is hearsay, but i think it's about isobel campbell, former B&S cellist. i dont really care, cause either way the song pretty much owns. |

i haven't seen pumpkin, i've heard rave reviews. but i guess always thought the song was a bit more downer than that. the song is kind of a sarcastic look at a character they talk about is kind of a career-driven, at-all-costs type of person. |

almost every part of this song gets to me. it can fit a melancholy or very chipper mood. the song fits a lot of the early belle and sebastian formula, lyrically. starting off with a narrative of a character that is lonely and unable to relate to many people but kind of becomes more optimistic (without being sentimental) to finish it off. some of the new stuff is like that, but there is something about their early work that has that sort of magic. i mean the new stuff is finely crafted as well, and you cant just hope the band stays the same because they'll end up being boring. |

seymour stein was/is(?) a chairman of sire records. he also met with belle and sebastian to sign them. the line "You liked Chris's jacket/ He reminded you of Johnny/ Before he went Electronic" is about Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. He was in a group with New Order's Bernard Sumner called Electronic. Apparently, Stein signed The Smiths. Speaking of Chris, his piano part is probably the best part of the song. I love Stevie and his songs, but this is probably my least favorite. |
