An underrated song, awesome guitar. I honestly don't think its about them freakin lotr books, there are like 20 zeppelin songs ive seen that half the people say are about lotr, which i hated the books, so im gonna be biased. Maybe the song is about more than one thing, women AND drugs perhaps? If they were smokin hippee lettuce at the time, they may not even remember. Probably not true but, maybe they got high as the georgia pines, accidentally wrote a song, sobered up, and said, "what the hell is this? Oh well we'll play it anyway." and then you have an awesome song not saying snortin is good, but it probably helped them write some. That is my (most likely wrong) idea. |

How true, they are way too many posts, but if you notice, like, 90% of them are arguments, very heated ones at that. I believe you really can hurt yourself trying to find the meaning of this song, cause it ain't very specific. I also saw saw qoomba say quote " sorry led zeppelin fans, THEY, are ... So i think he knows. Yes he said he, typo? maybe he was refering to a band member and didnt mention it? |

Greatest riff ever imho, the solo is cool, but not their best. That little pedal squeak is cool, but you gotta crank it to hear it. |

I always thought it was "steady loaded woman"i dunno, but it is, a close second to the ocean, my favorite riff. It sounds INCREDIBLE when played on the gitfiddle, lots of overdrive or distortion one. I have heard it is about, well named after, a black dog around the studio at the time. The song doesn't sound like it has anything to do with a black dog. |

It was on the BBC sessions album, as mentioned above, which is a great cd too, and it is a awesome song, i guess the ones who have that album are the lucky ones that get to hear it : ) Great riff though, i think it has something to do with Plant's wife too. |

I knew they were Lord of the Rings fans, and that theory makes sense too, unlike some i. e. teletubbies, or whatever the crap they are, which i don't think was serious, i found it hilarious. But anyway, most all of these meanings make sense, so you'd have to go to Page or Plant, and they probably don't know themselves. I think it was either the religous one or lotr. The movies were ok, but i didn't love them |

This is an incredible song, my favorite to be exact. The main reason is for the solo, which is awesome. The song is awesome to play on guitar, if you play. I agree with qoomba here, they probably weren't smart enough, and imagine who hard it would be to make it sound like a song backwards and forwards. LOTR was around back then? I guess I've been under a rock somewhere. I think it means what other people have said about the two paths, to heaven or hell. But forget tryin to convince other people, nobody gone agree on one theroy. |
