if you come up with an explanation for these lyrics, then you need to be able to justify it with more than a few carefully selected lines. 'into the secret garden dont think twice.' prostitute? 'youve gone a million miles.....' 'there be tenderness in the air' 'lead you down the path' prostitute? you get my point. lyrics are often deliberately ambiguous, so to work out a true meaning will be usually difficult. to me the song seems to make me think of true intimate love as opposed to love that is shallow and worthless. i dont say this is the intended meaning, but it is where i go when i hear it. even when we add our comments the box says 'what does this song mean to you'...not 'explain this and prove its meaning'. |

i watched a lecture series by leonard bernstein. he talked about how poetry can have many meanings and it would be truly impossible to guess them. we are limited by not being in the poets world. we can only guess at what the words might refer to. in the end what a song means to you is what matters. who really cares what it means to others. you can relate what you hear to your own world. it is wonderful however to read other interpretations and to try to understand the poet. |

marian tries to phone him from overseas, he doesnt answer for various reasons, he is not doing well in life, money is tight, he has problems but no-one understands because theyre all fools as he walks around his local streets in a sea of faces unknown to him, he feels alone and will possibly drown in this sea and become cold like the rest, but maybe marian can help save him from the grave or death of his soul, well, i had a go! |

i think it could be about a potential lover who blocks the singer out of her mind due to spiritual reasons. 'bury me deep' is the denial of potential love 'voices singing' maybe church choir 'unsung, unsaid' means the potential love is not acknowledged 'broken and torn' means the effect of this denial 'spoken in tongues' is maybe language barriers the song could in fact be about sex (the wish) aswell as denial (the reality) 'on the bed tomorrow mourning' a pun on morning, but means waking up and realising what you have lost by the denial 'under the spell' believing in God as a result of being under some spell |

I read this on a web site .'This song reflects Madonnas desire to have a child and her belief that this would give her life meaning. All mention of lust has been replaced with more spiritual reflections about the power of love.' And, 'It is extremely introspective and psychological in tone.' I am not sure how the lyrics are working, not having any experience of this myself possibly, but more than likely it is abstract poetry related to the kind of feelings involved. |

Its fairly clear I think as to this songs likely meaning. A beautiful song. When he says everything is everything it comes across to me as a kind of 'I dont care to keep listing specifics because all falls into one substance when youre missing, so I tell you everything is everything, but youre missing' |
