The Magnetic Fields – The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It sounds like the two men talking in this song are struggling to deal with the reality and the magnitude of love. The speaker, the unnamed 'great composer', grew up on pop music much like the kind that Holland-Dozier-Holland would have written for the Pretenders and the like, can't handle the concept that love isn't as trite and simple as music has brought him to believe. This is what leads him to kill Mr. Saussure, the great philosopher. It's a narrative of the disillusionment that pop culture creates about what love really is, the way it cheapens and skews the ambiguous concept of love in modern society. Even pop music cannot simply love for it's beautiful complexity. |
Woody Guthrie – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Do what is the Do-Re-Mi, exactly? any ideas? maybe a play on 'dough'-re-mi, meaning money? |
The Magnetic Fields – Drive On, Driver Lyrics | 16 years ago |
fantastic. I absolutely love it. Finally, in this song, I can hear that wonderfully ironic overtone of country music that used to be the jewel of the Magnetic Field's Repertoire. |
The Magnetic Fields – California Girls Lyrics | 16 years ago |
So does anyone have any thoughts about the concept for this album? I mean, the obvious overt theme is the distortion; but I want to know if there's a hidden one on this one, like Vampires on Charm of the Highway Strip or Introspection on I. Any ideas? |
Cansei de Ser Sexy – Art Bitch Lyrics | 16 years ago |
blow blow blow my art-dick |
David Bowie – Let's Dance Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's about war. Think of two cowboys in the old westerns: "Let's Dance Cowboy" It's an intimation of a fight "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues" Why would you wear red shoes to dance to a sad song? Because red is violent. and the blues represent the horrors and saddness of war. "the serious moonlight" 'moonlight' implies night, darkness; 'serious', as war is. et cetra. |
Soulja Boy – Crank That (Soulja Boy) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
sexist, horribly derogatory toward women. there are better dance songs out there. |
The Magnetic Fields – Take Ecstasy With Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Ecstasy is a popular drug in gay club scenes. My perception of it was that the reference to the drug (remember, Merritt RARELY sings about specific drugs, although he sings about drugs often) served to underscore the homosexual theme. I thought it could also perhaps being escapist. Ex usually brings you a prolonged euphoria. Perhaps I'm being pessimist, but I always thought that this boy he loved had died, hence the past tense, and that he just doesn't want to remember. |
Aimee Mann – Pavlov's Bell Lyrics | 16 years ago |
allusion's interpretation is probably pretty accurate... but then, what's the significance of the name Mario? was it a relationship our Mann was in, perhaps? |
The Magnetic Fields – Punk Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
it's a parody of punk music - maybe Stephin Merritt has a distaste for it? |
The Magnetic Fields – I Thought You Were My Boyfriend Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i love this song - it's exactly how i felt when my boyfriend broke up with me... right down to only missing his sex. :P |
U2 – Like a Song... Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sometimes, when I'm upset, I close my eyes and imagine Bono listening to this song, and wondering how he let U2 get so shitty. |
U2 – Like a Song... Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sometimes, when I'm upset, I close my eyes and imagine Bono listening to this song, and wondering how he let U2 get so shitty. |
Elvis Presley – His Latest Flame Lyrics | 17 years ago |
*underrated. :P |
Elvis Presley – His Latest Flame Lyrics | 17 years ago |
...you mean Vanilla Ice didn't write that song? ...just kidding. Definitely my favorite Elvis song. Overrated. And I love the Smiths' Live medley, too. Although not even Morrissey can touch the King. |
Bob Dylan – She Belongs to Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's about Edie Sedgwick. |
Gregory and the Hawk – Bravo Charlie Lyrics | 17 years ago |
that's because it IS "like daddy, like daughter." And that pretty much sums up it's meaning, too. |
U2 – Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I can't believe nobody's getting this. The fact that this was their first album after the Soviet Union fell? The Soviet Union's theme music in the beggining? The art in the booklet!? The theme of Zooropa is consumerism. This song is about U.S.-Russio relations after the fall of the USSR. As soon as they embraced Capitalism, buissinessmen from around the world flooded into Russia to monopolize on these people - these people who would be totaly sweapt away by this new, shiny consumerism, dazzled by it all. Daddy is the U.S., the Crashed Car is the old Soviet Union and by 'Paying' to rebuild, the U.S. is obviously getting a lot more out of it... |
U2 – Babyface Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Absolutely about television. There can be no doubt at all. There is nothing about this song that alludes to a woman that can't be used interchangably with television. seanbrady is spot-on. |
U2 – The Wanderer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's about the Cold War. |
Morrissey – Nobody Loves Us Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Morrissey is actually a Socialist... this is one of his songs about that. |
Belle & Sebastian – Put the Book Back on the Shelf Lyrics | 17 years ago |

It is beautiful. does anyone know where it's to be found on record? |
Echo and the Bunnymen – Seven Seas Lyrics | 17 years ago |
ach! how is it nobody's commented even THIS yet! This is certainly one of their absollute finest songs. Any ideas what it means? that's why I came here... |
Morrissey – Striptease With A Difference Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Is it just a leak? What release was the full song on? It's brilliant. |
Morrissey – It's Hard to Walk Tall When You're Small Lyrics | 17 years ago |
also; the last line isn't 'read' it's 'reach'. |
Belle & Sebastian – The State I Am In Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree - Tigermilk is better. Anyway, what's the significance of the first stanza? I don't really understand that part. |
Morrissey – Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The population of the United Kingdom would be significantly less today if Morrissey never wrote this song. |
Morrissey – It's Hard to Walk Tall When You're Small Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I always thought he was saying 'Gringo' (pronounced 'ringo') which is mexican slang for a white person. It makes sense considering his locale in L.A. and his recent fascination with Mexico... other then that, I really have no ideas. |
Jackson Waters – Center of Attention Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Who gives a shit? they both suck. |
Steve Burns – What I Do On a Saturday Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think it's improbable that it's about his transformation from Blue's Clues Steve to Steve Burns. I read in an interview that as soon as he got off of his last day on Blues Clues, he shaved his head. It was something he'd always wanted to do. Maybe that's actualy what it was about. hahaha. Maybe he regreted the shave at first? Of course, since then, he's gone bald for real. So he must have come to deal with it. |
Morrissey – Ganglord Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think Moz has been listening to his punk rock records a lot lately. He's taken up an extremely anti-police regiment lately. There were a few examples in You Are The Quarry. And this song is pretty much about how cops are racist pig-dogs. This is by far one of Morrissey's best B-Sides, and live, he sings it like nothing other...I simply can't wait until it's idly stuffed into six or seven re-releases of Tourmentors and included on a B-side compilation and perhaps even a best of.... |
Steve Burns – Mighty Little Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think ThePlaygroundMircle was close to right. He wanted to move on from his past and do something new. But I definately don't think that he regrets who he was and how he got here. I think it's a song about recognizing who you were and using it to make a stronger future for yourself. |
Belle & Sebastian – Marx and Engels Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think that's out of the Communist Manifesto itself, if I'm not mistaken. Mind, I might be. |
Elliott Smith – Chelsea Girls (Nico cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oh, Andy Warhol. You stalk pop culutre like a ghoul. |
Pet Shop Boys – Discoteca Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Esta canción es muy significativa si usted habla la lengua... después de todo, "¿Entiende usted?" es el argot español... Manera I de preguntar a un hombre si él es también gay. |
Morrissey – Ouija Board, Ouija Board Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Well enolt, I think your therory might have a bit of levvy... this is Morrissey we'retalking about, he's known for a bit of genderbending... =] |
R.E.M. – Moral Kiosk Lyrics | 17 years ago |
'It's so much more attractive inside the moral kiosk' literally translates to 'It's easier to criticise something when you've never tried it' |
Morrissey – Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah... I think it's very simple. Girl wants attention from lifeguard, fakes drowning, lifeguard's asleep, she drowns. Depressing. Ironic. Morrissey. |
R.E.M. – I'll Take The Rain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Watch the music video. It's about Princess Diana. |
Pet Shop Boys – One Thing Leads To Another Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Fantastic song. Very underated. The relentless retro-active story of a man who looses his job, and his girlfreind because of it goes to the bar and gets smashed, hit on by a man, and in confusion drives home drunk and dies in a crash. |
Depeche Mode – It Doesn't Matter Two Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Such an amazing song. There was a time in my life when I was sure it was written about me. Martin Gore is a genius. |
Motörhead – Killed By Death Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I can't even comprehend how much this band sucks. 'Killed by Death'? What the fuck is that? |
Depeche Mode – What's Your Name Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I LOVE This song. :D It makes me so happy... DM wasn't really DM when Vince Clarke was there. They were like a whole nother band. But I still think this song is a masterpeice. It's just fun! |
Depeche Mode – Tora! Tora! Tora! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Martin's first work recorded with Depeche Mode. It's a very interesting introduction that paved the way to a very brilliant career indeed. AgenOren paints a very interesting picture of it... "I played an American..." |
Marilyn Manson – The Last Day On Earth Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Beautiful song... easily one of the best he's ever writen. |
Depeche Mode – Death's Door Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Lovely song... was this a SoFaD B-Side, or was it just in the credits of Devotional? That's the only place I've heard it... ...anyway, it's pretty obvious what it's about. A family's son dies, after being abroad living his own life, and now he's coming back home in his coffin to be buryed. Mart's voice is so beautiful on it, though.. |
Depeche Mode – Pimpf Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Hahaha. Yeah, from Strange. I think it's halarous. I laugh my ass off every time I see poor fletch banging his head against the wall. It's definately heave ho, though. Not sure what it's trying to get at. |
The Smiths – I Know It's Over Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about me. Damn everything. I love this man. He's the only one who understands, sometimes.. |
Iron & Wine – Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Beautiful. I swear he wrote it. It's too natural.. to good to be a cover. |
