It seems to be about how 'normal', middle-class or at least comfortable people are severely uncomfortable by the fact that things that are wrong with the system keep popping up and proving that there's more to do. Like the world isn't as sorted as they wish it could be.
But they don't want to do anything about it, because they just 'want to be lazy'. |

To me, this seems to be a beautiful song about a girl whose life is full of the worries ('The choirmaster, usually a bastard, knows her mother’s sick, he’ll be nice to her'). With all this, everything else seems useless.
This is especially obvious to me in the line:
She shut her eyes and imagined the desert
No cars, no mobiles, just sun and bread |

To me, this is a song that is trying to convince someone who left him to come back. The person could have gone off him, and that's why he has to change the taste in men.

I think this song is actually about someone trying to convince himself he's better off without his ex. He says, for example, that he's dissatisfied which is usually a negative feeling; then he goes on to try and defend this as a good thing.
It's almost a, "who are you trying to convince?" song. |
